Any jazz lover will tell you that one of the main considerations in their appreciation of jazz is spontaneity, and the freedom it gives to improvise. In jazz, freedom is everything. Here you have a record that was recorded simply because some musicians met in the studio one day in 1996. They were not under instruction, they had no plans. What they had was the presence of mind to make music with one another, free to collaborate and spontaneously create new sounds. Drummer Harbans Srih tells Jazz45 about Short Story From Tabla, Drums & Trumpet: "We were tracking some funky jazz with a full band. All left at the end except for Pandit and myself. As there was a bit of time left I said to Pandit to have some fun tracking tabla and drums. Engineer pressed the record button and off we went without any prior rehearsal. This take is the result. Colin had turned up, took one listen and said he'd like to play trumpet on it. Again, without any particular discussion he went in and recorded this take, resulting in this fusion of Indo-Jazz." And then in 2003, "Oye Maia" came about: "We met at the recording studio one afternoon. I had an idea of recording an Indian themed track and had brought along a kalimba. I showed it to Shanti who started to play it. It was suggested that he recorded a two-bar loop while Pandit and I performed alongside. Shanti then improvised on trumpet utilizing Indian phrasing. The track was named after his daughter Maia, and translated it means 'Listen Maia'."

Introducing the first 7" single from bassist and composer Shay Hazan and his quintet from Tel-Aviv, Israel. Dedicated to saxophonist Albert Beger, a mainstay of Israeli jazz and Hazan mentor, "Berber's Cha Cha" is an up-tempo piano-led waltz, redolent of classic Prestige Records soul-jazz, especially when some urgent horn charts turn up the heat. It's a corker! While on the underbelly, "Old Tart" sounds like nothing less than a lost gem from the Brecht/Weil songbook. Lugubrious and magnificent, this world-weary vocal cut is more than a match for the nominal A-side. Destined for the hippest jukeboxes in the hippest joints in the country, this milestone tenth release in Jazzman's estimable JAZZ45 series keeps standards impossibly high. The JAZZ45 label features original artwork and original music on each and every release, and are limited to just 600 copies worldwide.

And now for something completely different and, man, is it a treat. Blending acoustic (duduk, sax, double bass) and electronic (Moog and Roland synthesizers) elements, this Greek duo of Sokratis Votskos and Harris P cannily updates the modal folk drone that has bewitched musicians and listeners alike for centuries. "Spirits of Mauronoros" is as mesmerising and it is lovely; a plangent soprano sax improvises over an enticing, bubbling, synthetic stew -- imagine Eno extemporizing alongside a Dimotiko folk band having just listened to In A Silent Way. After the opening invocation, "Kolida Hymn" offers a simple, repeated descending synth line (think early '70s German electronica) topped by a minor key sax melody. Spacey and hypnotic, it then takes flight into an uplifting atmospheric refrain before paring itself back down. Reverence of the Ineffable is the vibe on both sides of this modern spiritual meditation making it perfect for late night chill.

The Sokratis Votskos Quartet was formed in Greece in 2017 with a mindset firmly rooted in the sound and aesthetics of European jazz. Add to the mix a strong influence of US legend Wayne Shorter and of course their own personalities and inherent Greek cultural background -- here is a sound of jazz like no other.

The Orbit was founded in 2016 by Danish saxophonist Soren Lyhne Skov and pianist Peder Vind. The two had been playing together for over a decade in various groups inspired by Afrobeat and Ethio jazz. The ominous "Orbit Bound" is centered around the figure played by the bass clarinet. The time is 9/8 and with the sound of the bass clarinet you might get a Balkan feel. "NV" is a tribute to the North Western borough of Copenhagen, which is a multi-ethnic and partly still ungentrified part of Copenhagen. Edition of 600.
