The late great Italian film director Michelangelo Antonioni, perhaps most famous in the English world for Blowup (1966), Zabriskie Point (1970), and The Passenger (1975), created his most arresting work, the so-called "trilogy on modernity and its discontents" in the early 1960s. Comprised of 1960's L'Avventura, 1961's La Notte, and 1962's L'Eclisse, this is not a narrative trilogy, but instead a stylistic one. With music from the brilliant composers Giorgio Gaslini, and Giovanni Fusco this is an essential collection and a beautiful look into the sonic world of Antonioni's most brilliant work.

Jeanne Dielman present a reissue of the Ornette Coleman Quartet's This Is Our Music, originally released in 1961. The fifth album from the brilliant free-jazz saxophonist, Ornette Coleman, was released in 1961, a mere three years after his first title as a leader. Coleman burst on the scene with his fiery playing and strong compositional statements. This Is Our Music is a brilliant statement of purpose, a youthful declaration of power and innovation, and one of the cornerstones of early American free-jazz. Featuring perhaps his most well-regarded quartet, with Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums. Essential free music from a legend.

Jeanne Dielman present a reissue of Serge Gainsbourg's Théâtre Des Capucines 1963. Théâtre Des Capucines 1963 is one of the earliest live documents of the legendary French singer. Recorded in a brilliant small group setting, featuring only the instrumentation of the fantastic Hungarian guitarist Elek Bacsik and French journeyman bassist, Michel Gaudry, this is Gainsbourg at his cool and minimalist best. This is the same group that recorded that year's near perfect studio album, Gainsbourg Confidentiel. This live recording takes that album's minimal vibe to its sultry and smoky extreme. A beautiful live recording from one of the most famous singers of the mid-20th century.

Jeanne Dielman present a reissue of a compilation of recordings Milt Jackson made with The Modern Jazz Quartet (with Lou Donaldson on saxophone) and The Thelonious Monk Quartet from 1948-1952, originally released in 1955. This release highlights the bebop brilliance of vibraphonist master Jackson. Inspired by Lionel Hampton, Jackson took up the vibes at age 16 and was performing in Dizzy Gillespie's group by age 22. It was in Gillespie's group that the foundations of one of the most well-known and best-selling jazz groups, The Modern Jazz Quartet, were laid in the ground. That group, who recorded countless albums, first recorded in 1952, and these are some of their earliest recordings. Essential music from a jazz master, accompanied by some of the brightest artists in jazz history.

Jeanne Dielman present a reissue of The Archie Shepp & Bill Dixon Quartet, originally released in 1962. The debut as a leader for both Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon, two formidable members of the free jazz and avant-garde elite. Rounding out the quartet are bassists Reggie Workman and Don Moore, and drummers Paul Cohen and Howard McRae, each on various tracks. While the album undoubtedly swings, this piano-less quartet definitely prefigures the trailblazing free jazz work the two leaders would be involved in for the remainder of the decade, and beyond. An essential piece of early free jazz.

Jeanne Dielman present Across The Rocky Mountain, a magical collection of Kentucky's own Roscoe Holcomb. Roscoe Holcomb is one of the most legendary figures of Appalachian music and a huge influence on the '60s folk scene. Playing banjo, guitar, and singing in that beautiful high lonesome sound, this compilation spans his recordings from the late '50s and early '60s, mostly done in the "field" with a single microphone. A coal miner for most of his life, Roscoe knew the world he sang of all too well, his authenticity is unassailable. Though he found some success in the '60s thanks to the Greenwich Village scene, Holcomb stayed a laborer in Kentucky and passed away in 1981 at the age of 68, suffering for years from asthma and emphysema, the results of his years in the coal mines. Essential Americana.

Recorded in Venice in 1961 by the French sculptor, painter, and iconoclast Jean Dubuffet, these recordings were originally released in a hyper-limited 10" box set that is all but impossible to acquire. An early progenitor of the avant-garde and musique concrete, Dubuffet's recordings nearly defy category and still sound innovative some 50+ years later. Essential and unequivocal recordings from the founder of the Art Brut movement.

1956's The Unique Thelonious Monk was the legendary pianist's second LP for the Riverside label, with which he would have a fruitful relationship that would span six years and over a dozen albums. Though this is, in fact, a piano trio album made up of standards, it is so much more than that might imply as it is also a Thelonious Monk record. As always, his genius for improvisation and interpretation of melody are on full display, a fantastic early record from one of the true iconoclasts of jazz, and another fine reissue from Jeanne Dielman.
