KABA 001EP
|
Kalakuta Soul Records is back and starts the year with a new collaboration with one of the most inspiring record stores and well of fortune for all music lovers, especially for those who enjoy Caribbean music and the profound musical heritage of Jamaica: the infamous Bahlo Records. For this first release, both have created a new imprint that brings both labels together and goes by the name KABA that stands for (well?) Kalakuta Soul Bahlo Records. For their first collaborative release, they were able to license two songs originally released on a private press LP by the mighty Golden Sunshine Steel Band in 1980 that will definitely bring the listener through day and night, whether at home, on the road or in a furious set on a mind-blowing sound system.

Italian boogie doctor Giovanni Damico joins forces with the mighty Gabriele Spagnuolo and Francesco Di Domenico on guitars and saxophone. "To Fela's People" is one of three stompers delivered for this joint teaming up with Mr. Villy Odili -- lead singer of the amazing Nigerian band Villy And The Extreme Volumes -- who's precise lyrics and drifty voice joins forces with a charging Afrobeat rhythm hailing from Giovanni Damico's bad ass laboratory. "Afro Stomp" and "Baba" on the other side come with the most furious drums and bassline one could ever imagine accompanied by a celestial instrumentation.

Limited restock. Kalakuta Soul Records present Kai Niggemann's solo debut, an all original album of outrageous poetically abstract music created live and without overdubs on a Buchla 200e Electric Music Box. It's all improvised and recorded live in Berlin, yet it sounds meticulously crafted in a dark basement studio throughout the entire last winters. Kai is a member of the 30-piece kraut-noise-jazz collective The Dorf and the electronics duo The Last Books (with Achim Zepezauer), performs and records with Mia Zabelka as Redshift Orchestra, cofounded the internet-computer music European Bridges Ensemble and the electroacoustic duo Resonator.

Kalakuta Soul Records present the Homewreckers' new full-length album, Machinekiss. The Ruhr valley-raised trio has been heavily involved in the underground dance music scene for many years and the soulfulness of their output is unquestioned. Now, Machinekiss might come as their masterpiece. Recorded over the course of three years, the album's nine tracks evolved out of a long, in-depth investigation of blues and funk recordings from 1910 to 1980. As the sole sonic sources, the musicians -- Johannes Ehmann, Gregor Pottmeier, and Krischan Wesenberg -- use their own music collections, making the work a reflection of their personal and collaborative history and backgrounds. Micro particles of guitar chords, organ sounds, and drum elements reappear in new contexts and are fused with contemporary synthesizer and bass motifs. The results are deep, rhythmic, complex, and eccentric, leading the listener into the melancholic, more obscure sides of urban life. The Homewreckers have previously released on Thee Blak Label/Radikal Fear (Chicago), Groove Attack Productions (Cologne), Unique Records (Düsseldorf), and Circus Company (Paris). Featured artists: Johannes Ehmann - bass, digging, sampling, arrangement, slicing; Gregor Pottmeier - organs, reeds, fractured sampling, dequantization; Krischan Wesenberg - drums, engineering, shaping, balancing. Comes in gatefold sleeve; Edition of 500.

Hailing from the Ruhr area in Germany, the Homewreckers have a long history to look back on. Numerous projects have involved the three band members Johannes Ehmann, Gregor Pottmeier, and Krischan Wesenberg in the past 20 years, always meandering between the realms of jazz, blues, soul, house, and techno. Their unique sound spans from deep dancefloor oriented electronic music to film soundtracks that, amongst others, underlined the infamous productions of the artist Harun Farocki. Confusion EP is an excerpt of their upcoming album Machine Kiss that sums up six years of research and work.

repressed! After a furious release from Cuttlefish & Asparagus (Hang On in There (KKS 003EP, 2015)), Kalakuta Soul presents a 12" from Sadar Bahar, one of the major influences on the label's work. Listeners who are still dancing and sweating to his unforgettable Chicken Wing Edits series may have been wondering what he's been doing. Well, Soul in the Hole's true soul and DJ's DJ Sadar Bahar has been travelling the world giving everybody a serious lesson in soul music that he calls disco beatdown. Some would also call Sadar's ceremonies "exorcism" -- pretty apt for the fantastic disco tracks here.
