Toy Tonics sublabel Kryptox comes with a new album by Greek harpist Sissi Rada. Demeter in Aexone is a pure solo improvisation on harp. Using no post production techniques and no overdubs, the album was recorded one afternoon in her studio in Voula, Athens, overlooking the ancient demos of "Aexone." It is a tribute to the ancient myth of Persephone, the daughter of the goddess Demeter, to whom the Eleusinian Mysteries were dedicated. The music evokes archaic atmospheres, as raw wooden sounds intertwine with modal harmonies and extended techniques, by this ancient instrument, hailing from 3000 BC that is suddenly transformed into a current medium. The harp that Sissi Rada plays is a rare 100 years old Lyon and Healy Style 3 harp. It's Sissi Rada's second album on Kryptox. Sissi is a multifaceted artist who has navigated the realms of both classical, experimental symphony, avantgarde chamber music and electronic music with finesse. She has collaborated with Brian Eno, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Andi Toma of Mouse on Mars, Jay Glass Dubs, Lena Platonos, Daniel Barenboim, Teodor Currentzis, Yannik NézétSéguin, Andris Nelsons, and Donald Runnicles. Hailing from Greece, Sissi has carved a distinctive niche for herself with her unique blend of ethereal vocals, innovative soundscapes, and a fearless approach to genre-defying sound exploration. Transitioning into electronic music, Sissi Rada melds classical sensibilities with electronic approaches, incorporating songwriting techniques in the biggest volume of her work. Sissi also composes music for chamber music ensembles. Her works have been performed in Berlin (Sophiensäle), Munich (Münchener Kammerspiele), Vienna (Brut), Zurich (Gessnerallee), Frankfurt (Mousonturm), Stockholm (Dansmuseet) and at the Diaghilev Festival in Perm, Russia.

Once known solely for electronic music, Berlin has quietly gone through huge changes over the past years. While the queues in front of the techno clubs become shorter and shorter, the city is slowly converting into a melting pot for all sorts of musicians and artists with amazing instrumentalists, producers and bands from all over the world moving to the German capital to create a new scene. As a result, Berlin has come out with some of the craziest, non-conformist types of music. Toy Tonic's sister label Kryptox has started to establish itself as a key platform for this new scene. One of the protagonists of this scene is Joel Holmes, the former band leader of Carl Craig's synthesizer ensemble and keyboarder of (Grammy-nominated) cult band Roy Hargrove. Joel Holmes's new album Into The Abyss is a perfect capturing of the current moment in Berlin. The album features other main players of its new scene such as Ziggy Zeitgeist from Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange, as well as tapping into international talent such as acclaimed flutist Tenderlonious from London. Few people bridge the gap between jazz and electronic music as successfully as Holmes. Over the past years, he's been working with some of jazz's most relevant artists incl. Roy Hargrove, Curtis Fuller, Javon Jackson, Nnenna Freelon, Curtis Lundy, and Jimmy Cobb. Once tapped into electronic music too he made records with legends such as Carl Craig. Working with techno artists made him curious about the new dance scene resulting in his moved to Berlin where he quickly starting making music with the likes of Cody Currie and Kapote. Joel describes the album in his own words as follows: "The next album Into the Abyss, is the first time I recorded music through the lens of different landscapes and on two different continents reflecting the times of today's music that is mirroring what is happening in our communities and worlds today. From dark colors to light, music is so diverse and I tried to reflect this in my album. This is also the first time I have had this many special guests on an album. So, I'm excited about this." Features Tenderlonious, Roberto Manzin, DNA, Cory Baker, Theljon Allen, Desney Bailey, Vernon D. Hill, and Eldar Tsalikov. Remix by Emma-Jean Thackray.

The current moment in music is an interesting one: electronic music is more popular than ever, but at the same time there is a growing counterworld of new bands and musicians who are inventing new styles by reinterpreting old styles and combining live music with electronic production. Many of these new musicians are switching between "scenes" and styles -- just like many young listeners do today. Kryptox, the sub-label of Toy Tonics, is a platform for these new hybrid musicians. Noah Fürbringer is one of these new talents. Moving in these intermediate worlds -- a virtuoso drummer, composer, and busy band leader who is at home in many genres and besides writing his own great music which he debuts on this album he also is a side musician for some big names of the German rap and indie pop scene. Since he moved to Berlin in 2019 a lot of things happened: he came with a big hunger for creating something meaningful out of his radical lust to play drums and make music with as much different musicians as possible. This album -- his debut as a bandleader, composer, producer, drummer -- marks a special moment in his very young career. The LP is pure jazz funk in a modern style. Some might even call it jazz rock or fusion. Great compositions which fit perfectly in today's neo jazz scene. His name has appeared as a drummer in a wide variety of projects. In 2020, he founded the band Lord Of The Amazing Panther together with Vincent von Schlippenbach (DJ, electronics), Dirk Berger (guitar), and Beat Halberschmidt (bass). At the same time, he developed the cool jazz project Moses Yoffee Trio with Moses Yoffee on piano and Roman Klobe on bass, with which he was invited to the legendary London jazz club Ronnie Scotts. Moonwalker, for which Noah Fürbringer gathered a handful of friends around him, shows the wide spectrum of his musical abilities and the intense interest in exchange with other musicians. At a certain point the voice of Detroit activist and musician Malik Yakini appears in two pieces and talks about John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, and the revolutionary power of black music. Noah Fürbringer explains: "It's not only a tribute to jazz, but also a political statement. The two pieces are a reference to how many different musical worlds I want to bring together." Features Malik, Roger Rekless, and Mike Nasa.

After the albums of Berlin-based Greek harpist Sissi Rada (co-produced by Brian Eno), the krautrock collective Spiritczualic Enhancement Centerr, experimental drummer Niklas Wandt, and jazz/neo-classical genre stepper Ralph Heidel -- it is now time for jazz ravers Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange to take the center stage. The band around Melbourne born drummer and producer Ziggy Zeitgeist has been based in London for some time before moving to Berlin a few years ago. By now Ziggy and his crew have a big following in Berlin where the new jazz and soul-influenced dance scene is growing rapidly with many new spaces, clubs and radio stations. Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange is a collective that bring together UK jazz funk vibes that have been made popular by Kamaal Williams, Shabaka Hutchings, and Ezra Collective, amongst others with the energy of Berlin's electronic DJ music. In fact, head of the collective, Ziggy Zeitgeist, is a big fan of DJ tools which equally have a big influence on his music. His aim is to create a mix of jazz and tribalistic, electronic energies to create jazz raves that reflect a fresh modern touch of what could be a sound for the next years. Of course, many elements of their songs come from the 1970s -- the chord progressions, the fusion keyboard solos, the driving rhythms. But the general sound of the music and its straight electrifying energy create a new and unique futuristic sound. Sci-Fi Jazz Directions was recorded by the original trio of Ziggy Zeitgeist, Matthew Hayes, and Lewis Moody. After spending thousands of hours together making music on stage and in the woodshed, this album represents a turning point for the group and quite possibly the very nature of creative collaboration. This is an album of tunes crafted over "online jam sessions", as the trio were split between three corners of the world during 2020. Ziggy explains: "Our blessing and our curse is that we're adaptive creatures, we find a way, we adapt to the circumstance, and so as artists and as improvisers we found ways to connect and create in a virtual space." The trio continue to hone their unique brand of dance-floor focused "jazzrave". This album epitomizes the Zeitgeist of the time, the crucial meeting point of our organic selves with our technology.

The great wealth of multifaceted skills is Ralph Heidel's core identity, evident in the attempt to classify his music into a genre. Drone jazz, organic glitch, neo-classical, jazztronica, all these terms apply when we read about his music. He began his career as a saxophonist and by now has also become a highly requested composer and arranger for a wide variety of productions. The 28-year-old musician was signed by Mathias Modica for the Kryptox label, while he was still studying at the Musikhochschule München. Heidel released his debut album Moments of Resonance (2019) with his eight-piece ensemble Homo Ludens, followed by his EP Relief (2021). This grandiose prelude received applause on an international level. From neo-classical and ambient artists like Carlos Cipa and Josin, to German Indie acts like Drangsal and All diese Gewalt, Ralph Heidel has been featured on many albums. His wide range of artistic ability and curiosity was also demonstrated by his collaboration with a big star of the German rap scene, Tarek. Ralph Heidel rearranged the album Golem for a chamber music ensemble. The Golem Sessions album then, was released in 2020. Thanks to Heidel's precise work, it has been proven that rap and a chamber music ensemble, ambient and trap can complement each other. Heidel's name became well-known within the scene which finally made him 2022 the musical director of Casper, one of the most famous rappers in Germany, and his band. The official tour will start in March 2022 under Ralph Heidel's leadership. However, Ralph Heidel's creative drive seems to be inexhaustible. Which now made him finish his new album Modern Life. Together with one of the currently most important indie and pop producers, Max Rieger, Heidel created his latest masterpiece. Modern Life is the further development of the compositional debut album Moments of Resonance and the predominantly electronic EP Relief. The piano and the string arrangements are back. He uses a vintage piano from the 1960s, which he recorded in his apartment in Berlin. Its distinctive character delivers an outstanding mood to the album. The result is an unmistakable sound that, in combination with his main instrument, the alto saxophone, bears Ralph Heidel's hallmark. As further components he uses small-scale, organic percussion, soft synthesizer surfaces, noisy loops and fragmented vocal samples. "Admiring" features Plateau Green. For fans of: Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Four Tet, Floating Points.

Kryptox label member Niklas Wandt comes with his second vinyl release on the German jazz-tronica label. The German DJ, drummer, producer and radio host is by now one of the key figures in everything wild that's coming from Berlin these days: his jazz stuff on Kryptox is just one of his many sonic faces. He is the head of German indie-pop band Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge as well good friend of Jan Schulte aka Bufiman -- and known for several collaborations with him. Now, Wandt comes up with what could be his most advanced release. A free-jazz album recorded with Swedish saxophonist Otis Sandsjö. And it might sound strange to some, but Berlin is becoming an international center of free improvisation. It makes sense as the city has been the center of techno for years -- the music that is extremely formalistic and all about repetition and standardized sounds and grooves. Free jazz is the extreme opposite to that formalistic tool music of the last years. No wonder a lot of people start to get into an improvisational mood in 2022. Otis and Niklas met at a now defunct bar in Neukölln that hosted improvised concerts almost every night of the week. Wandt had just moved to Berlin and was ready for action. Watching Otis play a trio with Liz Kosack, Dan Peter Sundland and an array of flickering bulbs, he was fascinated at once by the all-out intensity of his playing. As an improviser, Wandt "always sensed a particularly strong connection with saxophonists, specifically tenorists." So, the two expat musicians hooked up and started to jam and record this record. A lot of activity in different genres and scenes is between these recordings and the immediate present. Otis has released some highly original and truly genre-bending music with Y-Otis, Koma Saxo and Lucia Cadotsch's Speak Low and Wandt has been fortunate enough to travel a bit with various bands and later, in times of the global pandemic, to produce a lot of electronic music in his studio. But now the time is ready, and so Kryptox can finally release this very special album.

Spiritczualic Enhancement Center are a "spectral trance-jazz ensemble with a psychedelic-punk methodology", as they define themselves -- an eclectic group of 15 musicians, almost a collective, from Germany, Israel, Iran, USA, Turkey, UK, Russia and former Yugoslavia. Landing on Kryptox, with their fourth record, this is musical material the band recorded in several sessions in Romania and the Czech Republic, inside a church in Hamburg and while staying with a commune in rural Denmark over the last years. Their live shows are wild happenings and their studio sessions are improvised rituals. Making use of traditional instruments, self-built electronics, synthesizers and a large rhythm section. The band describes the recording process as "a head-hunting tapestry woven with the tonal colors of music". Recorded by 15 musicians spanning from Japan and Turkey to Moldova and Iran. The hypnotic music the collective creates is deeply psychedelic, but not in a prog or indie way. This music is more inspired by Miles Davis or Lonnie Listen Smith in the early 1970s. After finishing and editing the album the band went to an old empty villa in Nice at the Côte d'Azur and later proceeded to Istria's Adriatic coast to mix and finalize the session and create that what is ready to be released on Kryptox. In case you have the chance one day to see the band live: Don't miss: Since their formation 2017, they have performed in twelve countries, including festivals like Fusion, Camp Cosmic and Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Their explosive live performances and three albums have created a buzz around the band. Gilles Peterson called the group an "incredible act which he'd love to see live." And no other than Damo Suzuki of CAN is a fan and joined the band on stage at several gigs. For fans of: Khruangbin, LCD Soundsystem, CAN, Four Tet, Squarepusher.

Sissi Rada is a wonderfully ambiguous personality and one of the best harpists for contemporary classical music in Europe and at the same time producer of beautiful abstract electronica songs. Her album Nanodiamond comes out on Berlin label Kryptox with guest vocals by Lena Platonos, co-production by Brian Eno on "81948 (2000 OM69)" and Andi Toma of Mouse on Mars on "Maps" and "Blueblack Tomb". A futuristic body of work that combines the sweet melancholy of the classical harp with subtle electronic soundscapes and Sissi Rada's magical voice.
Sissi Rada was born in Athens, studied in Amsterdam and Berlin (Universität der Künste) and currently lives in Berlin, establishing herself as an active part of the new experimental music scene. She is a member of the David August Ensemble and makes music for art performances and modern theater. Besides her electronic and neo-jazz experiments in the Berlin underground, she has also built a substantial career as an established classical harpist. She is a member of Teodor Currentzis' musica AEterna orchestra and a frequent collaborator of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Nanodiamond is a melancholic journey through a universe of romantic harp atmospheres, fragile melodies, subtle impressionistic vibes -- based on lo-fi electronic sounds, noisy textures, raw sound design and at times almost robotic rhythmic constructions. A melancholic voice and subtle harmonic and melodic structures, that will sometimes catch you immediately and at other times will only be understood after a second or third listen, add a magical touch. It is music that you probably never heard before. Greek harpist living in Berlin switching between the neo-classical scene and the electronic underground. For fans of: Björk, Portishead, Mary Lattimore, Sophie Arca, Sam Gendel, Sega Botega.

Mathias Modica's Sonic Rohstoff is the new album on Berlin-based label Kryptox Music, Toy Tonics' and Gomma Records' sub label for new forms of jazz and electronica. Over the past two decades, Mathias he has made a name for himself by discovering and breaking new talent and styles of music. He produced albums with James Murphy and Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem, Peaches, Asia Argento, The Rammellzee, and WhoMadeWho, just to name a few. The album is a journey through abstract downtempo vibes, lo-fi jazz and futuristic electronica. This is Modica's first album under his own name, following three albums under his monikers Kapote and Munk. All instruments are performed by Modica himself, embellished by guest musicians from the new Berlin jazz scene. Most people might know Modica from his earlier works as a producer, keyboard player and founder/creative mind behind Toy Tonics, Gomma and Kryptox. The music on Sonic Rohstoff is based on deconstructed samples and beats made from real drums and field recordings. Guest musicians are Ralph Heidel (flute, sax), Viktor Wolf (sax), JJ Whitfield (beats). Loose drum patterns lead the way, mixed with carefully crafted, sensitive atmospheres setting the perfect mood for Modica's warm and melancholic chord progressions and melodies played on several keyboards. Across the album, he draws inspiration from 1970s jazz funk and 1990s hip hop and electronica. Moods transition from sweet to bizarre, from cinematic to funky. Modern pioneers like Flying Lotus and DJ Shadow are influences as well as movie composers like Alessandro Alessandroni and David Axelrod and the fascinating world of 1980s Japanese fusion jazz.

2020 repress. Mathias Modica's Kraut Jazz Futurism compilation is evidence of a new musical wind blowing through Germany -- especially in Berlin. After years of having been the techno capital of the world, the city now is embracing a much wider musical palette, attracting a new generation of sonic adventurists: international jazz musicians as well as German talents. These highly skilled performers are searching for something new, merging different styles and influences. It's a fact: jazz no longer 'smells funny.' And after London and L.A., Berlin is on its way to becoming a new hotspot for the next generation of jazz-influenced musicians, thanks to its free hedonistic spirit as well as a blossoming scene of new live clubs, festivals and happenings. This compilation showcases some of the most interesting artists on the new German scene to date. Yet, while other new jazz movements are more influenced by hip hop and R&B, these young German musicians have audibly steeped themselves in their own heritage: Krautrock and electronic music. The majority of the tracks on this compilation were composed exclusively for this release or have only seen a limited release via the artists' own channels. Features Karaba, SALOMEA, David Nesselhauf, Shake Stew, and more. Also features: Karl Hector & The Malcouns, Stimming x Lambert, Sissi Rada, C.A.R., Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, Oracles, Onom Ogemo And The Disco Jumpers, Torben Unit, JJ Whitefield, Niklas Wandt, Ralph Heidel // Homo Ludens, Keope, and Toresch. 180 gram pressing, gatefold jacket.

German guitarist, bandleader, and producer JJ Whitefield has been spearheading several musical sub-genres over the last two decades. His bands Poets of Rhythm, Whitefield Brothers, and Karl Hector & The Malcouns are almost legendary to fans worldwide. German label Kryptox has been created to show what's happening in the growing German neo-jazz underground. Brother All Alone is Whitefield's first album under his own name. Recorded in Berlin, Munich, and Nairobi with some of the most interesting heads of the German neo-jazz-kraut scene and mixed by Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics. In the 1990s, he paved the way for the retro funk revival as mastermind of the Poets Of Rhythm. Poets Of Rhythm's records later served as main influence for the Daptone crew, the New York band that backed Amy Winehouse on her breakthrough album Back In Black (2006). Whitefield later started to widen his interests in West African and Ethiopian music. This passion culminated of him being an integral part in re-launching the career of Ghanaian Afro funk legend Ebo Taylor and to work with Jagari Chanda of Zambian rock legends the W.I.T.C.H. since 2010. Now, back in Germany, JJ Whitefield culminates all these experiences on his album Brother All Alone, a melting pot of styles and influences, drawing from kraut, jazz, ambient, and world music heritages. His band consists of some of the most interesting talents of the new german jazz and kraut scene: Johannes Schleiermacher, Bernd Oezsevim, and Maasl Maier (Karaba, Embryo), with guest appearances from Sam Davids, Charif Megarbane, and Marja Burchard. The album starts with two quite calm songs: "Seven Seas" in 7/8 rhythm and "14/08". Then "Zone 30" takes over: an improvisation with a very slow tempo that opens of for "White Queen", a tribute song for Whitefield's daughter Lilly. Whitefield has a great interest in exotic library records: "Chilli Chicken" can be seen as a tribute to this scene. This track gets followed by two other tribute compositions: "Metrosex", a tribute to German Jazz legend Gunter Hampel and "Rubikon", an homage to one of the funkiest bands ever with a jazzy prog filter. Also "Yellow Sari" could remind certain vibes from more trippy exotic library sounds. The follow-up song "Dreckstück" then creates a slightly different atmosphere. The album closes with the beautiful "Nirguna", an ambient Indian drone experiment. 180 gram vinyl; Includes printed inner sleeve.

After the first wave of artists that have broken the ice with their way of combining contemporary symphonic music with electronica and jazz on the European side (Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter), now there is a new generation of young musician breaking boundaries on a new level, especially in Germany. These 20-25-year-olds don't just imitate what the bigger names in the scene have done but develop the style in a totally different way, adding new ideas instead of just copying what's come before. This new wave of artists have a huge musical knowledge, have studied at the best music academies, learned to play "classical" instruments and know how to improvise on a very high level. They have been raised in two different worlds, studying the history of (contemporary) classical music and also being influenced by what's happening in electronica over the last 25 years. Ralph Heidel is one of these new kids; coming from Munich, the 25-year-old studied saxophone and composition at the Munich Academy Of Music (think Julliard or Berklee). He graduated in 2018, learning everything about the music of composers like Ives, Schnittke, or Ligeti. At the same time he grew up with the music of producers like Alvo Noto, Boards Of Canada, Jon Hopkins, and others. He also comes from a family of jazz musicians and has grown up listening to the collection of his father. In his own music all this comes together. Moments Of Resonance is seven compositions full of brilliant little ideas, harmonic complexity, unheard music surprises, clever citations, dramatic evolutions, big explosive moments, meditative moments, and euphoric high points. This album is an emotional work of art for strings, saxophone, drums, bass and electronics. Heidel and his seven-piece ensemble Homo Ludens connect contemporary chamber music with electronica, ambient, post-rock and avant-garde jazz. Everything is composed and improvised; nothing is sampled. One will find wild punk-jazz parts that recall Zorn or Mahavishnu Orchestra, as well as romantic passages that recall European impressionistic composers like Ravel or Debussy. But nothing is imitated, everything gets broken up through an expressive new way of using harmonization and melodic composing. Sometimes the band flies through an ambient and drone universe but one moment later the music evolves into an explosive, impossible-to-describe musical moment. 180 gram vinyl; includes printed inner sleeve.

This EP is the first release on Kryptox, a Berlin-based label The four compositions on Moebius Strip are all based on a straight 4/4 beat pattern. Over that rhythmic base JRBB expand their ostinato-horn/bass patterns that often start with simple one tone unisono lines, but slowly grow into huge, emotive, complex structured arrangements.
