LAN 017EP
|
Exercise One present two mind-expanding cuts that reaffirm them as masters of the hypnotic groove. "All Out" opens with a restrained bass line and clacky claves before a bruising forward motion of percussive fills and ragged waveforms. For the truly hardcore, there's a gigantic old-skool rave breakdown. "Parasol" is more controlled with a simple, sidewinding groove. Glowing tones begin to unfurl like cosmic vines, tracing an unpredictable, expanding melody. This is psychedelic music at its purest and a real mind-fuck.

This is the debut full-length release by Berlin transplant via Rome, Jacopo Carreras. Despite the title, From Bed To Couch is no chill-out fodder: it's an arresting, invigorating, sprawling piece of work that dares to challenge the status quo of contemporary dance music -- not as negation, but as a kind of radically inclusive embrace of all kinds of electronically manipulated sound. It's occasionally manic, and unusually focused. And if you thought Berlin's Lan Muzic was a minimal label, think again. This is a wildly inventive amalgam of house, techno, rock, breakbeats, experimental electronics and brain-jarring noise that sounds like nothing else you've heard. You may detect echoes of Alter Ego, Radiohead, Autechre, Steve Reich, Mouse On Mars or Plastikman, but you've never heard them combined with such fluency and finesse. From studying aeronautical engineering to political philosophy to advanced computer music to full-blast live sets at clubs like Panorama Bar, It's probably no surprise that Jacopo designed much of the software he uses on the album -- a back-to-basics approach that yields results far more complex than your typical Ableton fare. (Even more unusually, many of Jacopo's own patches are included as bonus material on the CD, in the form of Pluggo plug-ins.) But don't be intimidated. At the core of the album are six monster techno tracks -- gargantuan jams unlike anything else coming out of Berlin today, or anywhere else, for that matter. Acidic sequences, muscular bass lines, ragged hi-hats, storm-tossed hand drums, delicate piano arpeggios -- all fused as if with a welder's torch into forms that are as supple as they are massive. (Think of Richard Serra's ominous slabs, combined with Frank Gehry's rippling surfaces.) Made with the club in mind, they're a DJ's dream, but they carry their energy with them wherever they're played.

Efdemin is the maestro of deep techno, and here he remixes Jacopo Carreras on the companion single to Jaco's debut album, From Bed to Couch. "One Sentence" is a straight-ahead track on a jagged path. Brittle arpeggios scatter like broken glass around driving drum programming and a bass line pushes and pulls in two directions. Efdemin strips back the original to a flutter of hi-hats and congas and "Manky" is a feisty, frisky workout with mischief in its heart.

"Celebrated journalist and continent-hopping gadabout Philip Sherburne has been busy in the 10 months since his debut recording, the no-holds-barred Lumberjacking appeared on Lan Muzic backed by an Exercise One remix. He showed his sensitive side with a remix of Guillaume and the Coutu Dumonts' 'Les Gans' (Musique Risquée). Thick with melancholic horns, that record earned glowing feedback from the likes of Ewan Pearson, Al Usher, Deetron, Gavin Herlihy, and James Mowbray. Lest anyone think he wears his heart on his sleeve, Philip followed up with an uncompromising slab of anxious, peak-hour mayhem, remixing Peter Van Hoesen's dubby techno monster 'L.O.C.' Now Philip is back with his first proper solo EP. Philip's journalistic activities may have found him branded 'the minimal mouthpiece,' but these three tracks display a range that may come as a surprise. They suggest a unique musical sensibility incorporating elements of house, techno, and more abstract electronica in unusual ways, drawing upon both formal musical training and an autodidactic approach to contemporary electronic production. 'Salt & Vinegar' begins with a flurry of shuffling, Latin-tinged hand drums -- we won't say 'tribal,' but we won't be mad if you do -- and quickly escalates via a rubbery, undulating bass line, anxious bell-tone arpeggios, and insistent stabs that refuse to back down. Droning voices swell deep in the mix; sirens blare as the track gathers mass. Crosscut with switchbacks and hairpin turns, this one's made with the DJ in mind, featuring two drops that are bound to inspire hands-in-air havoc. Wide-eyed and committed to the peak hour, this isn't an invitation to dance: it's a command. With an easygoing skip in its step, 'The Claim' eases off the throttle, opening in a fog of muted voices and rolling analog toms. It soon picks up the pace with emphatic, pumping chords, deep sub-bass, and intertwining synthesizers that lie somewhere between Detroit techno and Thomas Dolby's 'One Of Our Submarines.' Where it leads you is up to you: there's plenty of afterhours bounce for the movers, but just as much bittersweet bliss-out for the dreamers. Philip wraps up with 'Milk & Honey,' which actually began life as the original version of 'Salt & Vinegar.' Call this the 'pre-mix' then. Where 'Salt & Vinegar' is all about clenched intensity, the ever-so-slightly slower 'Milk & Honey' repurposes the same beat for a starry-eyed array of chiming bells and whooshing voices. If the A-side is a gamelan riot, this is a gamelan riot garlanded with flowers, an explosion of gleaming lights scattered over sun-warmed earth. We've long suspected that Philip's a softy at heart, and this muscular-but-delicate fusion of house, techno and IDM proves it."

"As a workaholic DJ in the '90s, Arne Michel travelled throughout Europe and created The Announced parties when most people had no clue what impact techno was to have on the musical world. Back in the days releasing as Thee Engineer, he returned to the party circus in the last years without an alias. Now working in the independent film business in Berlin and spinning at many a fine underground club on our vibrant party circuit, he's finding the time to put out some fine tunes for us."

"Exercise One are back on home turf to release their next artist EP on their own imprint Lan Muzic. After celebrating the 10th release of the label with the critically-acclaimed release by Philip Sherburne, they put themselves on the board again. After a number of remix engagements, they finally found the time to work out another two-tracker."

"In retrospect, it was probably inevitable: Philip Sherburne has long been so central a presence in electronic music, it was only a matter of time before his name turned up on a piece of vinyl. Being a friend and supporter of Lan Muzic almost from day one, it just felt right to have him on board. Especially because he gave us one monster of a track. The original is every thing that Lan Muzic likes: a solid groove, unmistakably techno, invitingly dark, and just a little bit trippy. All that in a tight, fat first production that displays his musicality. We think there will be many more."

"Exercise One have chosen another lovely Italian friend for their imprint Lan Muzic. Yes?we couldn't resist but to fall in love with the next funky Italian. Now it's Touane's turn to delight us with his groove. The record immediately struck the Lan Muzic cowboy s with his signature charm and so there was no way past releasing this lovely 'Eiertanz.'"

"Jacopo remains a favorite for the specialized listener but for this release he has tamed the beast. 'Olanto' is a wonderfully charming track from a musical realm only he can call home. There's nothing like this out there at the moment. Its more accessible than previous productions but his unique style has not been diluted to fit the lazy listener. No...this piece of vinyl still spits up a wagon-load full of rumbling beats that make you shake, only things are laid out in a more seductive manner. 'Olanto' is a track with a story and Jacopo is willing to get loud to make that clear. But it goes beyond sheer loudness aiming to impress. It's like raising your voice without screaming."

"To make it short, this 12" is special! A smartly driving techno slammer and a wonderfully charming house track form this single and show where the sound of Exercise One can go. It's one of these records that comes in handy when the set is getting longer and longer and you are happy that the flipside is equally strong as the A-side... or even stronger as time passes by..."

New Berlin-based minimal label. "Jacopo Carreras is the dark angel of the Lan Muzic crew. He brings salvation through crushing the customs of listening and reveals his particular vision on what enlightenment should be. If you have the patience to listen till the end you will understand how wonderfully twisted a straight techno track can be. He has a unique way of transforming basic emotions into a special arrangement of technoid electronic music. If anyone can claim the label 'unique' -- its him. Thoroughly devoted to designing his sounds individually, one could even go as far as describing him as driven. In a positive sense..."
