By the end of the 1970s, Archie Bell and his crew had achieved enviable status in the Philly International organization. Strategy was one of the last LPs for the label and the line-up included the dancefloor anthem "Tighten Up At The Disco," which finally has its first ever release on 7" single. Way back in the 1970s, William DeVaughn, a Washington D.C. government worker and aspiring singer-songwriter saw an ad in a magazine for Philadelphia's Omega Sound. This record operation had a unique business model as they would seek out artists then charge them to record at the studio. DeVaughn sent Omega some demos and eventually paid $900 so he could record "Be Thankful for What You Got," a re-written version of his original "A Cadillac Don't Come Easy" in 1972. In the same year that the original was released The Intruders, another great Philly International group did a more up-tempo version of this classic song. It's the closing track on the LP Energy of Love LP by The Intruders. It has never been released on 7" either.

"Tighten Up" was a summer 1968 number-one R&B and pop hit single by Archie Bell & the Drells. This Sonny Bravo cover is a blast. The son of a Cuban bassist with Conjunto Caney, Sonny Bravo had toured as a member of Tito Puente's Latin Jazz Ensemble, among other gigs. Like others, Bravo made boogaloo records in the late '60s. "We Got Latin Soul" by Mongo Santamaria is a cover of Dyke & the Blazers' "We Got More Soul." Mongo Santamaria introduced Afro-Cuban street music to the world. He later fused the music of his native Cuba with R&B and jazz to create a distinct sound that would be popular with audiences worldwide.

Private pressings have always been objects of demand and research by record collectors. In most cases, print runs were no more than 300 copies, and despite the total lack of recognition, this movement can be seen as a countercurrent act to the mass music industry. Private presses are non-commercial print runs distributed as a promotion or sold at concerts. This was the case of Belair that, in 1980, recorded and sold the album Relax, You're Soaking In It at their own risk and distributed it in the San Francisco area. At the time, 1000 copies were pressed, which have become rare and highly desirable for collectors. Deluxe hard-cardboard sleeve cover. 180g vinyl, plus obi.

Majoie Hajary is an atypical musician, born in Paramaribo (Suriname) to Indian parents and raised in Amsterdam. In 1970, in France, accompanied by the best jazz musicians and with arrangements by Roger Guerin, she recorded La Passion Selon Judas. The result was an incredible fusion of psych, funk, Indian and jazz elements -- deep religious jazz in the vein of Jef Gilson. Deluxe hard-cardboard sleeve cover. 180g-vinyl with obi.

For the first time on 7", the reissue of rare groove masterpiece "El Bobo." Jazz-funk, disco, fusion and soul sounds from lesser-known American producer, arranger and key player Webster Lewis. His career started working alongside Stanton Davis, Tony Williams, and George Russell -- very much driven by super creative jazz piano playing. But, like many of his generation, he ended up in Europe as record deals in the US were getting harder to come by in the straight jazz world. So he ended in Oslo, where he made music for TV and one super cult album recorded live at Club 7. Webster had broken through at a time when The Headhunters and the rise of disco were fusing -- and as such, he became the go-to guy for arrangements, production and that magic coat of boogie jazz glitter! Several albums were signed to Epic, and some classic work with Gwen McCrae, Merry Clayton, Lamont Dozier, and Alton McClain. On the B-side is The Spirit Of Atlanta's "Freddie's Alive and Well." A cut from the album The Burning of Atlanta by The Spirit of Atlanta, a studio project produced by Tommy Stewart and Clarence Carter. "Freddie's Alive and Well" is the answer song to Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead" and is a huge funk classic.

A rare album, Fisher was originally released on the Nentu label in 1976. Think Grant Green meets Eddie Hazel. This LP has it all: gorgeous soul jazz, wahed-out fuzz rock, dirty, head-nodding funk rhythms. It's a monster psychedelic soul-funk instrumental album. This is less jazzy than the Third Cup and The Next One Hundred Years, released by Chicago's Cadet label and more cosmic psych funk across both sides and gets super exploratory and trippy. 180g vinyl in deluxe hard-cardboard sleeve cover with obi.

One of the greatest musicians in the history of Brazilian music. Conductor, composer, arranger, band leader and, without a doubt, one of Brazil's most brilliant sax and flute players. In 1968, Paulo Moura brought together a notable group from the country's jazz and instrumental music to record the album Mensagem. He walked between African rhythm and American and European avant-garde, transforming the Brazilian soul. Licensed by Halina Grynberg. LP deluxe edition, 180g vinyl. Los Sonidos De FM's "Tema De Los Adolescentes," one of the all-time grooviest slices of Latin soul, was buried as the B-side of a very lightweight and downright forgettable instrumental. Los Sonidos De FM was a studio group that was the official house backing band for RCA Mexico, who released a few instrumental LPs between 1969 and 1975. Sola was a Mexican singer who released the Un Muñeco de Madera LP, but sadly, there isn't much information about her. However, this track was written and arranged by the Spaniard Manuel Alejandro, who explores funky Afro-Cuban rhythm. Sola's vocals are the most powerful here, seeing this track into psychedelic territory.

During the 1970s, Marcos Valle moved to the US, tired of living under the repressive military dictatorship in Brazil. He collaborated with musicians like Leon Ware and Chicago in Los Angeles. For this recording, he collaborated with musicians such as Sivuca, Peter Cetera from Chicago, Robson Jorge, and José Roberto Bertrami from Azymuth. LP deluxe edition 180g. Reissue, originally released in 1979. French drummer and jazz musician/composer Daniel Bechet dedicated Songs To My Father to his father, the famous sax/clarinet player Sydney Bechet. The only LP from Sydney Bechet's son is a hidden treasure. The base is a solid fusion and jazz funk sound. Still, the mellow and soulful moment is wonderfully groovy with arrangements reminding George Duke's albums, or Cortex plenty of funky Fender Rhodes. 180 gram vinyl; hard cardboard cover + OBI.

Reissue, originally released in 1983. A lost '80s groover from Bay Area soulster Fats Gaines is stepping out here with vocalist Zorina London. Fats Gaines was a jazz musician and orchestra leader born in Kansas, who had a significant presence in the San Francisco Bay music scene from the early 1950s to the first half of the 1980s. He experimented with various musical genres throughout his career, including rhythm and blues, soul, funk, and disco, but he always maintained the guiding presence of jazz in his music. His debut on record occurred in 1952, and although he had a prolific career as a live musician, his discography output was relatively limited and scattered. He recorded only half a dozen singles until 1983, which can be attributed to various reasons, including the volatile nature of the music industry and the difficulty in finding record labels willing to record jazz and other less popular musical genres. Despite his lack of commercial recognition, Fats Gaines is remembered by many as a talented saxophonist and orchestra leader who significantly contributed to the San Francisco Bay music scene. His music and legacy continue to be appreciated by jazz fans worldwide. Louisiana born and creed: Zorina spent her formative years in San Francisco Hunter Point district. She aspired to be an all-around entertainer; though her parents couldn't afford dance lessons, she hung around dance schools until the opportunity arose to show her dancing ability. Soon thereafter, she began dancing with various troupes and graduated as a leading dancer-choreographer for KEMO channel 20's variety program. She also began modelling professionally and won the Top Bay Area Model Award and the Knights of Honor Beauty Pageant in 1972. Also, during this time, she began working at San Francisco's Playboy Club, hoping for more opportunities and exposure. Besides her dancing ability, she exhibited her singing and acting abilities as well, with notables Carol Channing, comedian Prof. Irwin Corey and songstress Randy Crawford. Currently, Zorina continues her career as a singer, actress, and human rights activist in Taiwan. Under exclusive license by Carolyn London.

2024 repress, blue vinyl. Reissue, originally released in 1971. This isn't just a seminal album. It is an estuary. All the black rivers that would form Brazilian funk/hip-hop flow through it. Led by Paulista pianist Salvador Silva Filho -- Dom Salvador -- Som, Sangue, e Raça from 1971, one year after the explosion of Tim Maia on the scene, catalyzed the bossa nova and jazz background of its leader with the rhythm and blues of its members like saxophonist Oberdã Magalhães, nephew of samba-enredo master Silas de Oliveira and future leader of Banda Black Rio, who since the group Impacto 8 (which had, among others, Robertinho Silva on drums and Raul de Souza on trombone) had already been trying to reconcile MPB with Stevie Wonder and James Brown. Add to all this a mixture of samba, Nordestino accent, and even the black side of the Jovem Guarda represented by the authorial presence of Getúlio Cortes (older brother of Gerson King Combo, the James Brown "cover") in "Hei! Você". Alongside these elements and the presence of Rubão Sabino (bass), who still called himself "Rubens", drummer Luis Carlos (another member of Black Rio), the record enlists the trumpet and flugelhorn of symphonic musician Darcy in place of the original Barrosinho (yet one more founder of Black Rio), who was traveling during the recording but would end up being a leading force of the band. The album Som, Sangue e Raça paves the way for future generations of musicians and producers of the Carioca scene at the beginning of the 1970s. The lyrics that dealt with the question of race and the explosive fusion of samba, soul, jazz, and funk, elaborated by Dom Salvador and his troupe, Abolição, established the bases for the development of new sounds and tendencies in Brazilian music. 180 gram vinyl; deluxe hard-cardboard sleeve; OBI; resealable outer sleeve.
