Man Recordings was founded in 2005 by Berlin-based DJ and music journalist Daniel Haaksman. Before founding Man Recordings, Daniel Haaksman was running Essay Recordings, where he released the seminal compilation Rio Baile Funk: Favela Booty Beats. His new label's most successful releases so far have been the compilation Não Wave - Brazil Post Punk 1982-1988 and 12" single releases by Brazilian baile funk maestro, MC Edu K (Popozuda Rock n'Roll and Sex-O-Matic. In between, Man Recordings has released the ambient compilation Yoga Sessions, compiled by Berlin based DJ Dixon and released work by the Brazil's highest-rated international star, MC Gringo. The label wishes to continue its open-minded music policy. As there's so much great music around, a genrefying label profile is redundant. On Man Recordings you'll find everything from Brazilian post-punk to relaxation music to dub reggae to favela funk. The label is home to all sorts of good music telling exciting sonic stories.

Here are 5 Ku Bo tracks reinterpreted by some of today's hottest remixers. DJ Manaia's remix of "And You" from Ku Bo's debut album is for the big floors. Bert On Beats's rework is dancefloor-shaking Afro-beat. Daniel Haaksman's remix is also from the debut album -- imagine Dutch gabba meeting Angolan kuduro in a Cuban dancehall. "Kaggua" is reworked by newcomers Batida, and Lazy Ants put an ill synth line on their UK funky-inspired remix. Featuring Joyce Muniz, Anbuley, Daniecell, and Tshila.

Man Recordings boss Daniel Haaksman returns with various remixes of his acclaimed Gostoso EP release. Edu K delivers a minimal techno-meets-Forró interpretation of "Kid Conga," Chicago's ghetto don Rob Threezy brings the big bass drums in his DJ Rob 3 remix, and João Brasil twists "Kid Conga" into a Tecno Brega track. The B-side opens with a straight four-to-the-floor version of "Deixa Tocar" by Consistent, and Schlachthofbronx reworked "Jesus" in a rough and rugged interpretation -- call it Bavarian Soca Dancehall.

Since its inception in November 2006, the Man Recordings vinyl 12" series Funk Mundial has pushed the boundaries of what is called "Brazilian music." For the series, Man Recordings boss Daniel Haaksman commissioned some of the world's hottest producers in electronic dance music to collaborate with various hand-picked baile funk MCs from Rio. Artists like Crookers, Feadz, Jesse Rose, Count+Sinden, Seiji, Riva Starr and Stereotyp created a new musical hybrid: Funk Mundial, the international interpretation of Rio De Janeiro's 21st century party music. The compilation presents the world debut of the global view on the Brazilian music phenomenon called baile funk -- in Brazil simply named "funk." The tracks on the compilation stem from producers that live in cities like Paris (Feadz), Milan (Crookers), London (Count+Sinden, Seiji, Riva Starr), Berlin (Jesse Rose, Oliver $, Daniel Haaksman), Vienna (Stereotyp, Makossa Megablast), Chicago (DJ C) and Buenos Aires (Chancha Via Circuito, Frikstailers). Thus, on their Funk Mundial contributions, they added their particular local club music flavor to their exclusive productions. You can find a speed garage banger that fuses London's hi-speed and heavy bass club sound with a baile funk MC contribution by MC Thiaguinho. The Funk Mundial compilation features the West London broken beat of producer legend Seiji, teaming up with one of the most experienced MCs in the Rio baile funk biz, MC Dolores. There's the Parisian producer Feadz, who worked on his Funk Mundial track with 8 year-old MC Wesley, a child MC from Rio, and added his high-quality beat and analog synth skills, mashing up classical European music with heavy Miami beats. The compilation features the club anthem "Soca Ali Baba" featuring MC Dandão by Italy's Crookers, who recently rose to world fame with their remix of Kid Cudi's "Day+Night." Another outstanding track is house music's leading DJ and producer, the Berlin-based Jesse Rose and his co-op with Deize Tigrona, the queen of baile funk. Plus there are many more collaborations and three exclusive tracks. Get ready for the global remix of Rio baile funk. Funk Mundial -- 16 amazing, fresh tracks that make any party rumble. Other artists include: MC Leka, MC Jennifer, Edu K + Joyce Muniz, Rob B, Duda Siri, DJ Panko, Gaiola Das Popozudas, MC Pretinho, MC Maiquinho, and MC Jorge Stylo.

Their music mirrors the culture and everyday life of young Cuba, a generation which listens to hip hop, dancehall and reggaeton, without ignoring the country's vast musical traditions. Following the success of Gringão, the Rio-based German MC releases a boombastic new EP. London's Stereo MCs, undoubtedly the UK's most successful rap group of all time, are dedicated fans of MC Gringo's music and rhymes. Their remixes strip the original of its salsa-berimbau flavor and adds hip-shaking percussion and dubby chords. Their "Hypadub" remix rolls out Brazilian samba beats to the max. Think of Pressure Drop's timeless '90s club classic "Unify" and you get the point.

"(Edu K) Me Bota Pra Dançar" is a brand new track from Edu K, featuring Marina, Bonde Do Role's former voice and front woman. This marks the first release from Marina since her split from Bonde Do Role. Edu K dropped his own vocal contribution and provided the heavy bass lines and the dope beats that mark a new "baile jack" sound. Crookers add some spice to this booty-bouncing anthem, condensing it into an irresistible floor-smasher.

Stuttgart-born MC Gringo is the only non-Brazilian who has made his way to the top in the baile funk scene of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and this is his debut release. Born Bernhard Hendrik Hermann Weber Ramos De Lacerda, he performs for various baile funk parties all across Rio. With his intelligent, sometimes ironic lyrics and his laid back, communicative attitude, Gringo has gathered a solid fan following in Rio -- mostly amongst the female cariocas. Considering the short time Gringo has lived in Rio, he has made it to the premiere league in the funk game, performing in endless radio and TV shows. MC Gringo loves to perform his songs in Portuguese, exercising the rapping techniques he learned in his German hometown, where he also played bass in a punk band with Basti Schwarz, one of the brothers of today's world famous DJ duo, Tiefschwarz. Upon moving to Rio, Gringo got funkified, writing his own lyrics and working on beat arrangements on his cheap PC. His first direct contact to the funk scene was MC Binho, a significant friendship of rap mixed with funk that led to dozens of joint shows. After three and-a-half years of hard work, Gringo is now proud to present Gringão, featuring lead vocals by the main MC himself on mostly all the tracks. Guest MCs are his long-time collaborator MC Binho, MC Dandão and MC Dolores, who has already participated in the Funk Mundial release by Crookers on Man Recordings. Large parts of the release were produced by both MC Gringo and Amazing Clay in the infamous Amazing Studios next to the Maracana stadium in Rio De Janeiro. Other producers involved are DJ Sandrinho and DJ Rafael. With song topics ranging from mini bus travels to mass assaults on Rio's shores to Brazilian methods of leg-shaving, Gringão contains various styles of baile funk, all defined by the magical voice and personality of MC Gringo.

Chernobyl provides the baile funk rework and Scottie B makes it into a mad, ass-shaking Baltimore Club Twister.

Austrian Afro-dubsters Makossa+Megablast contribute to the Funk Mundial series. The duo team up with Gaiolas Das Popozudas, who are considered the fiercest female baile funk crew. For "Late Que Eu Tô Passando" ("Use Some Rubber When I Come Around Your House"), Makossa+Megablast deliver the most laid-back grooves and deepest atmospheres in the series so far. Man Recordings is proud to present the next volume in the Brazilian-European music exchange platform called Funk Mundial. #4 in the series is produced by the mighty Seiji, who, along with Rio baile funk legend, MC Dolores, crafted "Todo Mundo." Using the intense, sample-based groove alchemy of baile funk as a blueprint for his beat programming, Seiji created an outstanding rhythm track for Dolores' rhymes. Sonic reverberations, MPC-induced staccato elements, super dry handclaps, trademark drum rolls and a pounding bass drum make this a dancefloor monster.

Following the first two volumes in the Baile Funk Masters series, which included #1 by DJ Sandrinho and #2 by DJ Sany Pitbull, #3 comes from another prominent figure of the funk carioca scene: DJ Edgar. This gentle giant has been around the Rio De Janeiro funk balls for more than a decade, and is fully established as a member of Rio's baile funk A-list of beat wizards. DJ Edgar is both a skilled craftsman in the percussive live mastery of the MPC, as well as a DJ who rocks a party wherever he plays with a savvy mix of baile funk, electro, rap and electronic beats. DJ Edgar goes straight down to the dancefloor with his tracks -- call this the party EP of the series.

This is number five in Man Recordings' new baile funk vinyl series: presenting Vienna's Stereotyp. His futuristic approach to riddim science sees another innovation in the track "Jece Valadão." It's a super energetic dancefloor bomb that fuses the raw vibe of baile funk MCing with 21st century Jamaican licks, all rewound in true Vienna stylee. Featured MCs are Edu K and MC Joyce Muniz. For "Uepa," Stereotyp rubbed banghra drums into pieces, mixed 'em up with a nasty sounding, son-of-a-bitch bass, and rolled it all together into a jaw-dropping future riddim.

Hot remixes of "Hot Mama," from Edu K's bombastic Frenétiko album. The four remixes included here conduct cross-territorial blendings. The Sinden remix: call it fidgit house, minimal bassism -- this is a fresh uptempo groove. The Bonde Do Role remix comes in true Brazilian baile funk stylee, with a tamborzao beat. Zuzuku poured the Cuban bass track into a skanking tune. Edu K's own remix starts with a dancehall-influenced riddim and breaks down into an uprising, jacking house groove, perfect for DJ mixing from downbeat to uptempo grooves. Four remixes and a crowd-pleasing original mix.

Edu K Illegal is a fantastic mash-up party anthem EP where the songs of Brazil's Edu K get all mixed up with some great pop tunes. "Injeção T.N.T. (Edu K Rmx) " is a mix of AC/DC's "T.N.T." with a rap by Deize Tigrona. "Bundalele Baile Jean" fuses Edu K's party song with Michael Jackson's "Bille Jean." Next, Bonde Do Role do a great baile funk/progressive house remix of Edu K's "Sex-O-Matic." The flipside's "Funkeiro Blue" blends the raw power of baile funk with The White Stripes, followed by "State Of Shock n'Roll," where "Popozuda Rock n'Roll" is intertwined with The Jacksons. "Nite Klub Mama" brings The Specials together with a Cubano bass hit, and finally, there is the melting of '80s breakdance anthem "I.O.U." by Freeez with Edu K's "Sexxxy."

This is the first full-length release from Brazil's Edu-K on Man Recordings. Edu K is undoubtedly one of Brazil's most talented contemporary musicians. As singer and front man of legendary Brazilian punk band De Falla, they released more than seven albums, varying their musical style from heavy metal to punk rock and funk, and also became known for their energetic live shows. In 2000, De Falla authored the hit pop song "Popozuda Rock n' Roll," a salute from the punks to Rio de Janeiro's baile funk movement which has since caused a global commotion. This track was first released on the Miami Rock 2000 compilation and then re-cast by Edu-K for 2004's Rio Baile Funk -- Favela Booty Beats compilation, then finally released as a 12" single in 2005 by Man Recordings. For Edu K, the bass sound from the favelas of the Sugarloaf City was punk in its very essence reborn with the sound of baile funk. This time, it wasn't three chords and a singer that made a song and a group, but three sampled loops and a street MC. The commotion continues with Frenétiko -- the first baile funk-inspired album ever to be released outside of Brazil. It's forty-five minutes of pure energy, blending the hottest sounds of 21st century Brazil into a breathtaking, musical masterwork. Call it baile punk, samba reggaeton or electro punk funk -- Frenétiko is Brazil's new millennium answer to the post-local, post-genre musical era we live in. It's a high energy mash up of kick ass music that is fresh and unique. Take "Funkeiro C.B.," which includes hardrock riffs, percussive electronic beats and the ecstatic MC shouting of Edu K and his brother/co-MC Chilli Willi, or "Faz Que Eu Gosto," where the electronic and melodic songwriting shines through. "Hot Mama" adds Cuban flavors to the booty bass, and "Sexxxy" starts as a reggaeton track and then speeds up seamlessly into an electro funk tune. Last but not least, there's the rocking "Gatas Gatas Gatas," the bass-slapping "Da Punk Funk" and of course "Popozuda Rock n' Roll." You won't find another Brazilian album sounding so fresh in 2006.
