MAYWAY 006LP

Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Mayway Records' treasure trove filled with Belgian gold nuggets is far from empty. Volume 2 comes just six months after the initial launch of the label's compilation series (MAYWAY 002CD/LP, 2017). Part one of Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s was a smash hit. The label chalked up rave reviews both at home and abroad, and even famous Dutch writer Nico Dijkshoorn sung praises for the album in a column. Of course, all the accolades were just another impetus to outdo ourselves with Volume 2. Whereas Volume 1 was a blend of many different genres -- from heavy guitars across Brit and synth pop to hard electro beat, mellow soul, and cabaret -- the second installment will have the feel of a genuine album, albeit without abandoning the treasure hunt vibe that characterizes the series. Several big names were gracious enough to contribute to this sophomore release such as Dead Man Ray, Mauro Pawlowski & The Grooms, Vive La Fête, and Lunascape (with ex-Hooverphonic singer Kyoko Baertsoen). Simi Nah, Paper Fox, and the Walloons Of Piano Club -- with Melanie De Biasio's twin sister Catherine on the mic -- serve up sublime electro pop, whereas Barbie Bangkok, De Bossen, Black Shark, Basics, and Party At Vanzetti's (the band of Bart Vanneste, aka Freddy Devadder) cater to guitar and edgy (garage) rock enthusiasts. Also included are squeaky clean pop songs by Sugar Kane and Red Elmo, pining indie pop gems by The Germans and Confuse The Cat, laid back, night-clubby jazz pop by Stuffed Babies On Wheels, and a majestic "Air-meets-Moby" instrumental by Delavega. The only Dutch-speaking song on the record is the exquisite avant-garde track "Ten Dans" by De Legende, a project by Elvis Peeters (ex-Arome Di Amore), who has meanwhile made a name for himself as a writer. And finally the fantastic cult single "Constant (Raving)" by the mysterious Sue Daniels, is the kind of song that perfectly captures the essence and the raison d'être of Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s. Like Volume 1, this second installment of the series boasts a unique design and detailed liner notes. Once again the label were lucky enough to snare a renowned photographer: Frieke Janssens. Also features Sunday Afternoon Soundsystem, Sue Daniels, and Stuffed Babies On Wheels.

JTOTHEC (pronounced "Jay to the Cee") is Jonas Casier. With a home studio stuffed with instruments, a funky mind, his radiant smile, and a truckload of talent, JTOTHEC and his fantastic band -- Peter Lesage (Ertebrekers, Moiano, Gabriel Rios), Jeffrey Jefferson (Ertebrekers), and DJ SNS (Brihang) -- are ready to unleash their amazing power funk on you and the rest of the world. For more than ten years, JTOTHEC followed his own course, learning and absorbing, doing numerous supports and collaborations with, among others, Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, Témé Tan, STIJN, Aka Moon, Brihang, and Selah Sue. Meanwhile JTOTHEC worked on his own tracks and in 2017, he recorded his debut album with Jean Vanesse (Spirit Catcher) at the GreenHouse Studio in Beaumont. The twelve tracks on Somebody Had To Make This Record show the unmistakable talent of JTOTHEC: from up-beat power funk alternate to catching slow-paced songs, to startling spoken word and a hyper funky instrumental. This album will hit you where it hurts and where it pleases. The luscious and catchy melodies and ingenious arrangements give away influences of Frank Zappa, James Brown, Quincy Jones, Prince, and Jamie Lidell. Yet, on top of that, JTOTHEC managed to develop his own signature sound: authentic, original, playful, warm, just great music. Somebody really had to make this record, and you'll be happy JTOTHEC did. Welcome to the wonderful journey of JTOTHEC's power funk. Graphic design by Jonas Casier. Cover art by Brussels based artist Alex Deforce. Includes printed innersleeve and download code.

Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. A few years ago the people behind Mayway Records purchased a huge collection of CDs at the Belgian public service broadcaster VRT. In one fell swoop, this batch of CDs gave an extensive overview of the Belgian music landscape between roughly 1990 and 2010. Mayway Records decided to launch the Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s compilation series, collecting obscure Belgian tracks of superior quality dating back to that specific period: forgotten singles, B-sides, album tracks, and demos. In the late '80s and early '90s, home-grown Belgian talent and quality was starting to make some serious waves on the international scene, turning Belgian music into a hallmark of quality. dEUS paved the way for many other Belgian bands so naturally they had to be included on Vol. 1 of Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s: B-side "My Wife Jan", with a killer riff, is a hidden gem. Other names that will ring a bell include Wizards Of Ooze (vocals by Zap Mama's Sabine Kabongo), Elisa Waut (previously unreleased track from 1999), and Daan and Herman Gillis (inventor of the Sherman Filterbank) with their electropop project Volt (1994). Still, these established artists are just the tip of the iceberg. Wonderful rock songs by Two Russian Cowboys (risen from the ashes of Ugly Papas), SeXmachines (with Danny Mommens from Vive La Fête and dEUS) and tracks by Walloon bands Monsoon and Starving. The more electronic contributions by Nid & Sancy (sounds like early Chemical Brothers), Airlock, and de portables' nine-minute synth-post-rock masterpiece "Haut Gay" also ooze international class. Squeaky clean Britpop is served up by The Beautiful Babies with producer Martin Rushent on backing vocals. Ethereal synthwave by Kolk, while Pop Machine calls to mind the very best of Françoise Hardy and Brigitte Bardot. Peeters & Angst (Aroma Di Amore) and The Same (with Anton Walgrave and Aram Van Ballaert) take more of an arty approach and they do an exemplary job of it. The two closing tracks, Maxon Blewitt's Americana gem "Mexicali" and the very atmospheric "Psychologica" by Gèsman, will rank among the best songs you've never heard. In addition to a careful track selection, no effort was spared in terms of visuals: the cover photo is courtesy of Magnum photographer Harry Gruyaert. Tim Broothaers (of Zeal Records) is responsible for the overall design. Also features Thou and Prediker. Includes detailed liner notes of each track.
