2022 repress. "In 2009, Brian Cross (aka B+) organized a series of live events at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex in Los Angles. The Timeless series captured the lasting impact of several artists on the world of Hip Hop and beyond. Live fully orchestrated performances by Ethiopia's Mulatu Astatke and Brazil's Arthur Verocai bookended the incredible Suite For Ma Dukes, a tribute to James 'Dilla' Yancey, by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. These superb quality live recordings, now long out of print, are back in effect. On Mochilla Presents: Timeless Arthur Verocai the Brazilian composer/arrange leads a full orchestra through his self-titled 1972 release. The result was stunning. Having just witnessed the show captured on this recording MF DOOM remarked 'A true master conductor. Just as incredible live as recorded' with Madlib saying 'I could listen to this music every day for the rest of my life. Full color gatefold jackets with printed inner sleeves.'

2021 repress. "James Yancey, better known as J Dilla was born in Detroit. His work as a producer has a defining role in hip hop. He produced hits for A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Common, Erykah Badu and Janet Jackson. At 32 he passed away in Los Angeles in the care of his mother, Maureen 'Ma Dukes' Yancey of a lupus related illness. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson pays tribute to Dilla by interpreting his music for a 60-piece orchestra featuring special guests Bilal, Dwele, Posdnuos, Talib Kweli, Karriem Riggins and more. This premiere performance left many in the sold out crowd in tears. Part one of a three part series. Packaged in a beautiful 5-color gatefold jacket printed on brown chip board. Companion piece to the full-length DVD (MO 004DVD)."

"When you're headed out the door for your next vacation Take Me With You. This mix is intended to travel with you on your next tropical adventure to paint the musical background for your trip. I was inspired to make a mix that captures funk inspired rhythms from music I've collected on my tours / travels around the world. The goal of this mix is to show the rhythmic similarities between Samba, Cumbia, Calypso, Rhumba, Afro-Beat and Balkan Beats in a well-blended mix."

"Folk-jazz composer/arranger Arthur Verocai was born in Rio de Janeiro. He has created challenging arrangements and compositions for Brazilian artists Jorge Ben, Ivan Lins, Leny Andrade and Gal Costa. In 1972 Verocai recorded a self-titled solo LP. It is a stunningly innovative effort. It puts Verocai into a rarified field with the heavy string oriented music of Charles Stepney, David Axelrod and Frank Zappa. Released in a period marked by the Brazilian military government, the album fared poorly. Following its re-issue in 2003 the album has become a highly influential oft sampled classic (see Ludacris, MF Doom and Little Brother). The performance of this seminal 1972 record in its entirety brought the capacity Luckmann crowd to a stand still. According to Verocai, 'he had never played the record, alive or dead!' His delight at the opportunity to play this music 37 years later can be seen on the DVD. The music has been mixed by Verocai himself in Rio. History turned on its head and musical justice served." CD includes: Live concert (mastered) and the 'Balada 45 (Jneiro Jarel Remix)'; DVD contains: Full live concert, slideshows and special features; DVD Specifications: 73 Minutes/Black & White/Stereo/1.33:1 Aspect Ratio

2022 repress; 2LP version. "Packaged in a beautiful, five-color gatefold jacket printed on brown chip board. Ethiopian Mulatu Astatke is a giant in African music. He is the inventor of Ethio-jazz. His work has inspired many imitations, many admirers and a whole new generation of fans. His music veers from the sublime tezetas to the most foot-stomping funk. The award-winning and invaluable Ethiopiques series has shed a light into a vital and amazing music scene that existed in the Addis Ababa in the '60s. The composer/arranger of that era was Mulatu Astatke. On February 1st he blessed the sold-ut Luckmann Theatre with an amazing show. He shared the stage with veterans of the Los Angeles jazz scene Bennie Maupin, Azar Lawrence and Phil Ranelin. The performance is beautiful, showcasing many classics as well as some new material. Nas, Damien Marley, Cut Chemist, Quantic, Madlib and K'naan all have felt the influence of Ethio-jazz. This special edition 2LP honors Mulatu and his music. Part one of a three-part series."

"Timeless describes moments outside of time - moments that exist so deep inside history that they break through that finite grid. Timeless: The Composer/Arranger Series is an homage to the composer and arrangers that have influenced hip-hop in the most literal and profound ways. The creative center of popular music today is the beatmaker/ producer. Whether it is Timbaland, Dilla, Dre, or Madlib, these musicians have an uncanny sense for voicings, a penchant for unusual sounds and catchy rhythms and a magical ability to manufacture a good performance. Today's beatmakers are the direct descendants of yesterday's composer-arrangers. Their processes -whether it be writing a memorable line for background singers or finding the appropriate moment for a baritone harmonica - mirror those of today's musicians. The composer/arranger creates music through the frame of the bigger picture, often more concerned with how things sound together than individually. Similarly today's beatmakers produce music on a grand scale, but through automation and sampling. Timeless brings these two seemingly unlike worlds together. The series honors the musical legacies of some of the greatest composers and arrangers ever. Timeless celebrates the work in the context it should be seen -- with full orchestras. From Mulatu Astatke to J.Dilla to Arthur Verocai, the Timeless Concert Series touched upon the works of three musical giants. Mochilla is proud to announce the release of their 3xDVD box set. An extremely limited edition of 4,000 units will include full liner notes, a free fold-out poster exclusive only to this box set, extra features, songs and slideshows of images used in the presentation." "So much of Mochilla's dealings in Brasil would not have been possible without Rodrigo Teixera (known to the world as DJ Nuts). The Verocai concert surely would never have happened without him. His role in helping with the pre and post co-ordination was enormous. DJ Nuts is an astute and rigorous historian of Brasil's vast and varied musical culture. His record collection is legendary; his skills as a DJ are world class. We commissioned him to make this mix to help people understand the extraordinary legacy of Verocai. Many by now know Verocai's self-titled album, some even know the more popular compositions and arrangements, but none have dug as hard as Nuts. Years of collecting and a strong friendship with Verocai himself have made this historic mix possible. 78 minutes of all Verocai compositions and arrangements is a dream come true. For such a mix to be made, only a true Brasilian music aficionado could have created this, and we are honored to be able to share it with you."
