MCDE 1217EP
|
After a couple of sparking, floor-oriented releases by UK luminary Henry Wu and head honcho Pablo Valentino, Motor City Drum Ensemble continues its explorations of dance music spectrum with a new offering. Now batting is nomadic beatsmith Hugo LX, who develops a new chapter in his multi-faceted discography with this five-track opus, ranging from classic house to disco-flavored jams, detouring through the ambient and jazz fields, always with a certain eastern vibe to it.

2017 repress; 2015 release. Motor City Drum Ensemble presents fresh talent from down under to the label with Bermuda EP from Harvey Sutherland. Sutherland provides more of his trademark cosmic boogie biz on this double sider for MCDE. A one-time session player and behind-the-scenes man, analog synthesist Harvey Sutherland emerged from Melbourne's bubbling underground with a cassette tape in hand. 2013's Nexus EP on This Thing Records was a cult hit amongst dancefloor aficionados, priming listeners for a lauded EP on Echovolt Records (2014) and the best-selling Brothers on Voyage Recordings (2014).

Motor City Drum Ensemble present a new one from producer Pablo Valentino. On "My Son's Smile", Pablo's son Hugo-João's laughter is over a mellow, summery house track. With a little help from Lyon producer Patchworks, Valentino pulls off one of his most sophisticated productions yet. GE-OLOGY, legendary New York producer, flips it into a more of a peak-time thing, replacing the Fender Rhodes with thick synthesizer chords. "Atlantic's Calling" is one of those signature, late night house tracks that Pablo Valentino has championed throughout the years. "Good Ol' Days" is an homage to the late '90s, but it sounds fresh.

2015 repress. Marcellus Pittman, Mike Huckaby and Recloose get a go at some by-now classic MCDE material. Appropriately titled "Raw Cuts," the two tracks would start a series of raw house jams Danilo made in his studio using old school samplers and drum machines, a sound that at the time was far away from being status quo. Having been heavily influenced by soul, jazz, house and techno emerging from both the Motor City and beyond, Danilo found his signature sound: sample-based, raw, emotional and mature tracks.

The Motor City Drum Ensemble label brings you straight-up dancefloor material on this release. Jayson Brothers' "Drop Back" has been a hidden gem in Danilo's sets for quite some time already, and it is released alongside the storming "North & Pulaski." On the B-side, Creative Swing Alliance are back with their trademark house grooves. Last but not least, Pablo Valentino also delivers a solo joint, another staple in Motor City Drum Ensemble's record-bag.

2013 repress. With a little help from Motor City Drum Ensemble's arranging skills, the two Jayson Brothers bring back some dirt, samples & emotions into today's house music. "Monster Box," with its swinging 909 kicks, disco beat and Rhodes/guitar combination sounds like a lost Strictly Rhythm gem, while "All My Life" could have been released in the late '70s -- it's not only a re-edit of some disco track, it truly evolves by throwing together various sample sources in a clever way.
