Of the several Kevin Ayers BBC collections that have been assembled, this is the most interesting, focusing as it does on the most interesting phase of his solo career. Taken from four sessions (three of them from 1970), it has a good cross section of some of the better songs from his early career, including "Lady Rachel", " Whatevershebringswesing", and a revamp of his Soft Machine numbers "We Did It Again" and "Why Are We Sleeping?". About half of this is pretty uncommon material: the verging-on-tipsy "Derby Day" and "You Say You Like My Hat" don't seem to have shown up on any studio releases (though the latter appears on a recording of a 1972 show, Banana Follies), "Gemini Child" only showed up as an outtake on the Odd Ditties collection, and "Butterfly Dance" was a 1970 single. Furthermore, there's a cover of "Falling in Love Again", the pop standard whose languor lends itself well to Ayers' low, crooning voice, and "Queen Thing", which is nothing more than a brief satire of "Wild Thing". You get to hear a few different lineups of musicians as well, with the Whole World (including Mike Oldfield) backing him on two of the 1970 sessions and the Soft Machine plus David Beford and Lol Coxhill playing on the earliest 1970 session. By contrast, the 1972 session has a nice skeletal feel, for the most part drumless, with low-key reverbed guitar and harmonica.

The eight-song set is highlighted by the band's takes on Green's "Rattlesnake Shake" and the Jerry Lee Lewis hit "Great Balls of Fire".

These Soft Machine recordings for John Peel's Top Gear program took place in June 1969 when the band was at the peak of their psychedelic revolution and during their first transition towards an unprecedented form of psych rock jazz. These historical sessions, including a great version of Robert Wyatt's masterpiece "Moon In June", show the great potential of the band's early line ups featuring Hugh Hopper (bass), Kevin Ayers (vocals, guitar, bass), Robert Wyatt (vocals, drums), and Mike Ratledge (organ, electric piano, flute).

Deep Purple Mark I, live at the BBC in the heyday of the freakbeat. Same line-up as the classic debut Shades Of Deep Purple (1968) featuring Ritchie Blackmore (lead guitar), Rod Evans (vocals), Jon Lord (organ), Ian Paice (drums), and Nick Simper (bass guitar, vocals). The super-hit "Hush" plus a rendition of The Beatles' "Help" are the highlights here.

Pink vinyl. Performing on four different dates in 1968, just prior to and following the release of their legendary second LP, A Saucerful of Secrets, this is Pink Floyd at their early psychedelic peak. The first two tracks come from live shows in London at the Barnes Common and East Stratford at the Abbey Mills Pumping Station, recorded live for the BBC programs The Sound of Change and All My Loving, respectively. The four tracks from June 25th were recorded in-studio at the BBC's own Piccadilly Studios for the classic program, Top Gear, and finally, all of side B comes from an amazing December 2nd set from BBC's Studio 4, BBC Maida Vale Studios, in London, again for Top Gear. This is essential live recordings of Pink Floyd during their greatest era.

Performing on four different dates in 1967, the year they released their first album, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967), this is Pink Floyd at their early, psychedelic, and raw best. Their showing in May of that year, for the program "The Look Of The Week", was probably the earliest live video recording of the group and includes amazing versions of "Pow R. Toc H." and "Astronomy Domine". Two more recordings for the program Top Gear, which showcased the underground hipster scene of London, and one for "Tomorrow's World" round out this amazing collection of early Floyd, including great versions of "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun", "Flaming", and "Vegetable Man". Essential live recordings of Pink Floyd during their greatest era! Color vinyl.
