"Palto Flats/Putojefe Records present the first ever reissue of the work of American composer Dorothy Carter, master of the hammered dulcimer, zither, and other instruments of the hammer chord zither/psalterium family. A true musical vagabond, Dorothy was born in New York in 1935, though her spiritual pursuit of an expansive musical knowledge would take her to monasteries in Mexico, conservatories in France and London, and the founding of the Central Maine Power Music Company (CMPMC), with new-age/minimalist luminaries such as Constance Demby and Robert Rutman. Dorothy Carter was many things - a virtuoso player, storyteller, historian of Celtic and Appalachian folk music, avid lifelong busker, avant-garde musician, and itinerant troubadour, laying a framework for music that existed both within and outside of standard folk idioms -- never better represented than on her 1978 masterwork, Waillee Wailee. Underscored by Bob Rutman's cavernous bowing of the steel cello, the richness of Waillee Waillee's sound produces an album unlike any other in her discography. Carter counted musical colleagues as diverse as Constance Demby, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Laraaji, as well as her lifelong artistic partner and friend Bob Rutman, whose imprint is felt throughout the grooves of this record. The master tapes for this recording were fortuitously discovered in Rutman's Berlin studio, many, many years later. As recounted in Laraaji's contribution to the liner notes, Dorothy was 'someone who really influenced my early zither exploration and vocabulary and inspired my shift toward hammered zither performance and recording,' after encountering him busking on the sidewalk one day in the 1970s. Later, when living in Berlin in the early 1990s, Dorothy would begin work on manuscripts detailing the history of the dulcimer family and providing extensive sheet music, selected material of which is reproduced in the twelve-page booklet included with this release. Dorothy would find later success touring and performing in the late '90s with the ensemble Mediæval Bæbes, which she led with British musician Katherine Blake, playing a prominent role on their first four albums. The recording of Waillee Waillee would mark the end of an era for Dorothy: leaving behind the familiar confines of the northeast, she embarked to New Orleans, settling with her family there."

"Woo, the project of brothers Mark and Clive Ives, return to Palto Flats for the reissue of Into The Heart Of Love, originally released on cassette in 1990. Formed in the seventies in South London, the duo developed a cult following over the years, with renewed interest in their catalog through 2010s reissues by labels such as Drag City and Emotional Rescue. Woo's music, encompassing new-age, folk, ambient electronic and jazz idioms, yet transformed into a fully inimitable sound, is the profound result of years of brothers honing and tinkering with their craft from their home studio. Into The Heart Of Love, often heralded by fans as their most complete work -- sees the group expanding their sound over 20 plus tracks, utilizing vocoded clarinets, homespun folk melodies, and lilting electronics, coalescing into a journey traversing through otherworldly soundscapes. Containing touchstone Woo tracks such as 'Make Me Tea,' a duet between Mark Ives and Sue Amor over guitar and clarinet, 'It's Love,' a classically influenced guitar ballad, and 'Hopi,' Woo's astrologically influenced cosmically propulsive opener, which hints at the sonic adventure to ensue. Closing the album is the never before released vocal version of 'It's Love,' a testament to the healing power of love. This edition sees the album released for the first time in its entirety on vinyl, spread over two LPs, as well as a limited cassette reissue, all meticulously remastered by Stephan Mathieu from newly discovered hi-quality DAT masters. The gatefold jacket features new liner notes by Clive Ives, along with photos, drawings and images from the brothers' archives, with cover art inspired by its 1990 cassette release. Often lovingly held in the same regard and referenced knowingly to bands such as the Durutti Column, Cluster, and the Penguin Café Orchestra, Woo surrounds the listener with a transformative warmth. The band describes this album as their most all-encompassing collection of material, and it remains a highlight of their catalog. The brothers continue to record and self-release material from their home in Brighton, England to this day, manifesting new sounds along the way."

"Unreleased until now, Kiren represents an important period of Shimizu's artistic expression, an artist at his peak, while successfully exploring the intersections of fusion, synthpop, new wave, and jazz. By the early 1980s acclaimed saxophonist, producer and composer Yasuaki Shimizu had established himself on the Japanese new wave scene, producing many important experimental pop records and releasing several albums as the bandleader of Mariah. Following the release of his widely regarded solo classic Kakashi, from 1982, and the otherworldly Utakata No Hibi, by Mariah in 1983 (both reissued by Palto Flats), he went into the studio the following year with frequent collaborators, producer Aki Ikuta and Morio Watanabe (bassist of Mariah), to record a mystifying collection of experimental dance music. Utilizing cutting-edge technology and studio trickery, Kiren showcases Shimizu's trademark playfulness, marrying richly layered production techniques to off-kilter, sometimes traditional sounding rhythms and melodies." "Shimizu spent his entire life invigorated by sounds from around the world; with Kiren, he was able to partake in this ecosystem, to contribute something that was unmistakably his own." --Pitchfork

2013 release. "Recognized for his spiritual jazz classic, Isophonic Boogie Woogie, as well as his more recent output on EM records, Hearsay I-Land presents another parallel and deeply engaging side to Roland P. Young's story. This long-awaited re-release highlights Young's mid-80's foray into pop structures, soul, and dance music, and comprises the entirety of his scarce 1984 four song 12", I-LAND, as well as most of his 1987 LP, Hearsay Evidence, both self-released on his Flow-Chart Records. Originally compiled and released in 2013, this updated and remastered edition proudly includes an additional inner sleeve with unpublished photos, tip-on jacket, and a more superior vinyl pressing. Hearsay I-Land will fit at home in any downtempo 80's NYC set. It's a more intimate and personal album, marking a departure for the classically trained clarinetist, and followed a decade in the fervent Bay Area where he experimented within the minimalist and jazz genres, and then with his early 80s work in the postpunk-funk group The Offs. These recordings reflect a change of coasts with Roland moving to Manhattan, and touch upon many lyrical and worldly themes of the era via Roland's soulful voice, save for Ballo-Balla, which features floating vocals from his partner Risa over a spacey drum machine and hypnotic bass sequence, imploring the listener to dance."

"The latest on Palto Flats is the Shakey debut, a project from Silvia Kastel and Lizzie Davis (Wilted Woman), both who migrated from noise and free improv to the jagged edges of the dance music scene. A syncretic meshing of both artists sensibilities, Shakey encompasses the duo's love of digi-dub, jungle, musique concrete, and the fusing of ambient textures with abstracted rhythms."
"The opener, 'Crayscandens,' is meant to chase the squares out of the room. The 140 BPM free-techno assault cycles, variously, through rave stabs, queasy trip-hop dynamics and jaunty piano. The rest of the five-track EP is more inviting. 'Slappy,' which takes its name from a slap-bass sample deep in the track, is sympatico with fellow murk merchants like Cru Servers. 'Dischidia' flips the 'Fairlights, mallets and bamboo' atmosphere of '80s Japan into something modern and thoroughly alien, while 'e ocean''s burbling, melodic house will appeal to fans of RAMZi." --Resident Advisor

"Moriyama is the first release on Brooklyn based Palto Flats label by Nagoya-based experimental producer Foodman (Takahide Higuchi). A 5-track 12" focused on deep, tactile rhythmic and offbeat tracks, Moriyama tilts on some of the producer's most dance-friendly work. 'Mizuboro,' (meaning water bath) elicits the feeling of soaking in a tub of warm bassy synth pads, metronomic patterns of woodwinds and skittering percussion suitable for late night winds. Elsewhere, on 'Soudesu,' Foodman experiments with traditional instrumentation & vocal forms to create a special post-ambient/dance hybrid of familiar sounds reconfigured. Named after the district he lives in, Moriyama represents some of Foodman's most direct, accessible work -- a full helping. Foodman is the most internationally renowned artist coming out of the Japanese footwork/experimental scene, and has recently transitioned into more abstract, ambient compositions. "R. Girardin's Emotional Music is a is a contemporary rendering of synthetic midi-fusion and DAW experimentalism. Drawing links between Rashad Becker's textured compositional approach and the multicultural electro-fetishism of Benjamin Lew (Tuxedomoon), Girardin uses the synthesizer as a spiritual instrument, where the typical motifs of musicality and style degrade in favor of poetic modulation and breath-controlled hopefuls. Emotional Music is a synthesis of both the human and synthesizer's expressive logics; one of internal architectures capable only through external inlets and outlets. Based in Los Angeles, Girardin has previously released music on the Italian label Hundebiss and has contributed to the score of Invernomuto's film Vers L'Europa Deserta, Terra Incognita. Emotional Music is a co-release between NYC's Palto Flats and LA label Zero Grow."

2024 repress; LP version. "Originally released in 1982, Kakashi is another high water mark in the 80s Japanese underground. This album, which has gathered cult status in recent years, is the project of musical visionary Yasuaki Shimizu, and considered to be a highlight of his solo career. Shimizu was the bandleader of Mariah, who also saw their album Utakata No Hibi reissued by Palto Flats in 2015. Kakashi offers a similar blend of saxophone experimentations, jazz fusion and ambient dub excursions."
