El Encuentro - Vol. 2, the recent "scary good" 45-RPM single from Texas-based dynamic duo El Bigtoe Y El Guámbito, is a 7" DJ-friendly double-sider great for Halloween and El Día de Los Muertos. "Sabroso Y Espooky (Cumbia Espooky)" is a dark "sonidero cumbia rebajada" (a slowed-down cumbia done in the Mexican sound system style), full of menace and spooky subterranean sounds, while the flip, "Mantequilla Y Mermelada," is a much brighter up-tempo psychedelic tropical number that feels like a galloping horse ride clear across the Texas desert into Mexico and beyond. El Bigtoe y El Guámbito is a partnership between Beto "El Bigtoe" Martínez (Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Money Chicha, The Los Sundowns) and Victor-Andrés "El Guámbito" Cruz (Nemegata, Bulla En El Barrio, MAKU Soundsystem). A long time in the making, the project is fresh as today, forward-looking to tomorrow, but rooted in yesterday. Martínez and Cruz bring a unique, collaborative blend of analog and traditional instrumentation with electronic implements from guitars to synths to samplers. What they've created here is an experimental exploration of psychedelic tropical music from Colombia and Peru, engaging with but also moving into deeper palates than the ubiquitous cumbia. The four-song suite of music that emerged from the two's encounter at El Bigtoe's Lechehouse Studio after the pandemic lockdown incubation period chronicles an evolution of both musicians' sonic histories, the result being a quartet of tunes made with freedom and abandon, combining and reinterpreting solid traditional influences and flighty whims alike. This 45 is the second volume, the first being released by Chicago's Sonorama Discos. If you're a fan of Afrosound, Chicha Libre, Money Chicha and XIXA, you'll dig El Bigtoe y El Guámbito!

Cosas Raras is the new album from Argentina's cumbia hero Rolando Bruno. On Cosas Raras, Bruno and his band Grupo Arévalo romp through twelve tracks of their signature "cumbia trash" sound -- a rough and ready mix of Peruvian-inspired cumbia, punk, and other vintage throwback musical and visual inspirations from pop culture (like UFOs, street food and horror movies), all spun together into a wild mashup. Cosas Raras is the group's third album, and finds them traveling even farther afield -- exploring Arabic and flamenco influences, Afro disco, Japanese pop, Latin American baladas, and even Dominican merengue. This last genre serves as inspiration for the album's lead single, "Merentrash," a fun and very danceable "merenrap' tune with a retro Miami club vibe. In the vein of contemporary experimental underground tropical artists like Chicha Libre, Meridian Brothers, Frente Cumbiero, Acid Coco, Money Chicha, Xixa, and C.A.M.P.O.S., Rolando Bruno Y Su Grupo Arévalo are an important part of the scene, but are not yet as well known in the U.S. at the moment. Cosas Raras is set to change this unwarranted obscurity with its infectious rhythms, psychedelic guitar flourishes and memorable melodies. Multi-instrumentalist and graphic designer Rolando Bruno was born and raised in Buenos Aires and lived three years in Spain, before returning home to pursue his unique musical sound and accompanying visual style. His current musical project (psychedelic cumbia and other tropical sounds) was conceived in 2005. In 2015 Bruno expanded his approach, putting together a live band and reintroducing himself as Rolando Bruno Y El Grupo Arévalo. His backing band is a "supergroup' of sorts, composed of underground musicians from Buenos Aires, including members of Les Mentettes, Alfonso El Pintor, Los Alamos, and Pecera.

Peace & Rhythm announce the release of Richmond, Virginia-based salsa orchestra Bio Ritmo's self-titled 2002 album, first time on vinyl (double LP), remastered from the original tapes. The so-called "Green Album" has received a facelift for its vinyl debut, with a remix of the artwork and an interior gatefold spread chock-full of band memorabilia from the era. What's more, the original album tracks have been properly mastered from the reel-to-reel tapes for the first time, and the added live recordings give fans a taste of what it was like to hear tunes from the album performed on stage back in the day. Bio Ritmo are known as pioneers of the indie-salsa music revival, and this visionary album is the one that kicked the band into high gear in the second chapter of their career. Though inspired by classic salsa dura artists of the seventies, Bio Ritmo have created their own unique sound, some say "experimental" for their mixing of influences not commonly found in salsa music.

The second C.A.M.P.O.S. studio album is here at long last. More psychedelic and electronic disco cumbia. Titled The 8th Door and literally years in the making, this record is a culmination of everything that C.A.M.P.O.S. mastermind Joshua Douglas Camp has been working on since the first studio album Miracles came out in 2016 (PEACE 005LP), with many ideas for the new songs being fleshed out from renditions initially created during the pandemic lockdown and released as a two volume digital-only set titled Shake Up The World: Live In The Studio, Vol. 1 and 2. Other compositions date from before or during the time of the first studio album but were not completed until years later, benefitting from Camp's experiences in the interim during which the group Locobeach was born and C.A.M.PO.S. became a live one-man-band. As a result, The 8th Door is a more mature and focused release that will certainly satisfy longtime fans but should also attract new listeners as well. The multitalented Camp has been involved with many diverse bands over the years, including Latin-flavored outfits like Chicha Libre, Locobeach, and Los Crema Paraíso, as well as country band Westwork, Eastern-European klezmer group Litvakus, and the literary rockers One Ring Zero and somehow these various projects and musical genres all play a part in laying a background for The 8th Door. Though he plays most of the instruments on the new record (and handles production, engineering, vocals and composition), Camp also managed to collaborate with various friends and bandmates along the way. Pianist Marlysse Simmons (Bio Ritmo, Miramar) as well as percussionists Karina Colis (Chicha Libre, Locobeach), Neil Ochoa (Chicha Libre, Los Crema Paraíso, Locobeach), and Gabo Tomasini (Bio Ritmo, Yotoco) all add seamlessly to the mix, helping Camp create a rich, full web of psychedelic sound that transports the listener to interior worlds beyond the cosmos. Much like previous C.A.M.P.O.S. releases, The 8th Door is replete with retro synths, jangly guitars, funky bass lines, and otherworldly vocals that float on a bed of syncopated tropical percussion inspired by cumbia from Colombia and Peru, like some long lost Caribbean version of British synth pop from the '80s but with a modern touch that brings the music in line with similar contemporary underground artists from Bogotá, Mexico City, and Los Angeles. Includes download card with full digital album, including five bonus tracks.

Infectious, hypnotic tropical grooves with a ragga kick from Australia's premier cumbia orchestra. If you like Ondatrópica, Frente Cumbiero, Ska Cubano, and Lucho Bermúdez, you'll love Cumbiamuffin. It was only a matter of time before cumbia hit Australia. After humbly coming to life on Colombia's Caribbean coast, this rhythm snaked its way up the mountains to reach Colombia's urban capitals, Bogotá and Medellín, who transmitted the signal to Mexico and South America. Cumbia travelled, and wherever it landed it took hold; Charles Mingus got his fill in the '70s, Mexicans brought it across the US border in the '80s, Joe Strummer couldn't get enough of it in the '90s; and wherever it landed, it has shown its flexibility, its ability to adapt to new environments. Cumbiamuffin are the perfect example of what happens when cumbia arrives in a completely different continent. Since forming in 2010, they have become Australia's premier large format cumbia orchestra, offering a twist on the genre that no one saw coming. They take their inspiration from cumbia's brass band traditions, when the genre was adopted by orchestras in the 1940s, the start of its golden age, but they do not stop there. They also look further afield, to the big bands of Mexico and Peru, and even to the Caribbean, which is how their name came about. Cumbiamuffin represents the contraction of two musical styles that the group seamlessly bring together in one big, vibrant, joyous experience: cumbia and raggamuffin reggae. Armed with the collective energy of two authentic Colombian vocalists, a seriously massive brass section, heavy bass, funky guitar, salsa piano and equally authentic percussion, the 15-piece band combines elements of reggae, dancehall and roots from the Colombian Caribbean in a deft mix that is both retro and futuristic, authentically traditional and yet also experimental. Put together by a collective of Colombian and Australian musicians, the project has the common vision of introducing the purest sounds of the golden era of orchestrated cumbia to Australian audiences, but with a little something more added to the formula to keep things fresh. Having triumphantly conquered their home country's competitive music scene with sold out shows at numerous festivals and well-known venues all over Down Under, Cumbiamuffin are poised to break out to a global audience with their debut self-titled LP. Features mixes and remixes by Prince of Queens Deconstruction, OYOBI, Rizomagic, and SLP Turbo Sonidero. Download card included.

2022 repress, red vinyl. Heavy salsa dura with old-school flavor. All originals with an all-star band. First time on vinyl for this 2008 salsa masterpiece. If you like the Fania classics, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Tito Puente, and Quintero's Salsa Project, you'll love Jesús Pagán Y Su Orquesta. It has been more than a dozen years since singer Jesús Pagán and his orchestra cut these eight "From The Roots" gems to reel-to-reel tape. When Jesús Pagán came to Peace & Rhythm with the idea of reissuing this album on vinyl, the label heads jumped at the chance since the original recording and art concept were both inspired by the old-school records of the youth. Contemporary salsa on vinyl is enjoying a rebirth these days so it's only logical that Salsa De La Mata would come out on wax, and what better partnership than between friends who have worked together on projects for many years? Here it is in all its glory: honest, authentic, original songs that still sound fresh after more than a decade. For those familiar with this release from its incarnation as a CD, you already know what we're talking about; for those who don't know, here you go, killer salsa, desde las raíces (from the roots)! Download card included.

You might say Buyepongo and Quitapenas are sibling neighbor bands since they are of Mexican-American heritage, share some band members, have similar musical influences and are based in the Los Angeles area. Both transmit a similarly positive, socially committed outlook and life philosophy through their creative output. In addition, they have toured together and are part of the same larger socio-musical community. That is not to say the band's sound exactly the same or have the same origin story. Rather, it means they have enough in common that over the years they have forged a strong bond of friendship that has proven mutually beneficial for both bands and has helped them grow and build in a unique, positive way. While they each maintain their own separate identities, they share a long-standing, committed fan base and both have released music on the same label in the past as well. Most importantly Buyepongo and Quitapenas are part of an exciting generation of underground, independent, alternative Latin music inspired by tropical and folkloric roots from the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America as well as Africa, all of which is played with a jazz influence mixed with elements of psychedelia, electronica, and global funk. With all of these connections it was only a matter of time before these brother bands would decide to collaborate on a release, and in 2020 they did just that, approaching Peace & Rhythm with a concept born of their recent joint tour (which was sadly cut short by the global pandemic). Now, as 2021 begins a new year full of hope, this release is set to start things off with two super-hot tracks presented side-by-side and packaged with some dope artwork by honorary band member Deladeso. Buyepongo's "Cantarito" is an infectious, funky tropical romp that is the perfect soundtrack to an instant fiesta full of family and friends, food and fun. The lyrics mention making traditional tortillas and drinking from a cantarito (clay cup) while the band plays and the sun shines. The flip, "Inspiración" by Quitapenas, is equally upbeat and literally "inspiring" (pun intended), with its positive energy and lyrical outlook about the creative process. Both cuts are fueled by infectious beats, compelling vocals, intricate guitar interplay and soaring sax, carrying you away into a state of ecstasy that is akin to a heightened feeling of spiritual bliss and oneness.

Orquesta El Macabeo are the rebel souls of Puerto Rican indie salsa and they have been causing a ruckus for a decade with their original, catchy yet irreverent songs and dark humor. What better way to celebrate their tenth anniversary than with this fierce, live double-LP recorded on their home turf at El Nido in Bayamón, PR? It's the largest, most ambitious production of their career to date and contains all their best material arranged and played with the maturity, dignity, fire, and fervor required to burst the chains of neocolonialism. Brilliance and defiance in equal measure, sure to rank with seminal live salsa albums by the greats of yesteryear but performed with the freshness and force of today's Latinx underground. Peace & Rhythm and Estereo release a special edition two-track 7" 45 from renowned Austin, Texas psychedelic cumbia band, Money Chicha (featuring members of Grupo Fantasma and Brownout). Side A is a highly danceable chichadelic instrumental version of the breakbeat classic "The Mexican" cut live in the studio at Lechehouse. Trippy guitar and organ float atop swaths of tropical rhythm and deep bass. The iconic Spaghetti Western cowboy surf riffs are epic and come to an ecstatic crescendo, shimmering notes border-hopping through an imaginary southwestern Mexican-American desert by way of the Amazon. Side B, "Enfermera" (Nurse), is a thrilling and gritty cover version of the lesser-known 1970s cumbia beat track by Peru's Los Ilusionistas with urgent vocals by the multi-talented Alex Chavez of Chicago's alt-Latinx band Dos Santos. Two classic tunes covered with a fresh, invigorating take on the tropical psychedelia of 1970s Peru.

Locobeach is a NYC-based supergroup comprised of Cheo Pardo (Los Crema Paraíso, Los Amigos Invisibles), Neil Ochoa (Chicha Libre, Los Crema Paraíso), Joshua Camp (Chicha Libre, C.A.M.P.O.S., One Ring Zero), Edward Marshall (La Muy Bestia Pop), and Fernando Valladares (Guaco). This dynamic party band has forged a sound blending cumbia pop and Latin disco with a rock edge that is highly original, and their debut album on Peace & Rhythm is fittingly titled Psychedelic Disco Cumbia. Cheo Pardo explains, "after doing a fair share of live shows and getting the band tight we thought it was time to make a record. We wanted to work it old school; try the tracks live, make them tight, bulletproof and then get in to the studio." The results are diverse, fun, and infectious with classic tropical music meeting psychedelic rock, as well as disco, funk, and Latin house mixed with surf, chicha and spaghetti western influences that build a cohesive Locobeach sound, equaling "dance music for your brain".

Flor de Toloache and Peace & Rhythm have teamed up again, this time to reissue -- for the first time ever on vinyl -- the band's auspicious debut, the 2015 Latin Grammy Nominated album, Mariachi Flor De Toloache. The record showcases deep and melodic mastery of instruments and vocals as well as a generational understanding of traditional mariachi, successfully passed down from vocalist/violinist Mireya Ramos's mariachi musician father Armando and an extensive river of influences from her music loving mother Carmen. This is all interwoven with the modern R&B/soul influences of Shae Fiol (vocals, vihuela, guitar), whose songwriting shines as she translates her tracks into the rustic and folky ambiance of mariachi. Beautiful original arrangements give wings to trumpeters Julie Acosta, Jackie Coleman, and Anna García, who combine with Domenica Fossatti's dazzling flute work to achieve unparalleled orchestral heights in the all-important brass section. The classic Mariachi violin sound comes courtesy of Luisa Bastidas and Eva Lou Vossmerbäumer who are joined by Verónoca Medellín on guitarrón, Lila Downs band member George Saenz on trombone, and members of NYC's Banda de los Muertos. The material is refreshingly unique and yet rooted in tradition as well, and ranges across styles, regions and influences, from huapango to son, cumbia to salsa, bachata to bolero, Afro-Cuban to blues. There is also a touch of country/Americana, jazz, and American popular song added to round things out. Mastered vinyl version created by Pete Maher and pressed by Burlington Record Plant.

Ray Lugo and Peace & Rhythm have teamed up again, this time to issue Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra's fifth album, 100 Fevers/Ciento Fiebres. Ten dance-friendly cuts mashing up styles and moods. Afrobeat, Latin funk, cumbia, samba, disco, soukous, protest and party jams are the launch points, but as Kokolo fans have come to expect, there's a whole lot more heat in the grooves. As with previous Kokolo releases, Spanish and Portuguese vocals are in as much evidence as English. Special guests include Nigeria's Jo Jojo Kuo and Elani from Brazil. Every tune is danceable but has its own vibe from up to down tempo, protest to club culture, social justice to hedonism. Though not exactly a reunion album -- the band haven't stopped recording and touring together in one form another for the past 18 years -- bandleader Ray Lugo contends 100 Fevers is the best representation of what this Afrobeat orchestra has always been, an "eclectic mélange of influences that reflect what is going on within us as a band as well as in our lives at that particular moment" which "further expands Kokolo's search for the funkiest groove", a quest that Lugo hopes "never ends" but which he feels has benefitted by the band stepping back and "letting our sound 'breathe' a bit and return with a fresher outlook." Includes insert featuring an interview with Lugo, full credits, and lyrics.

"It takes audacity to start a song with questions as big and unanswerable as 'Where did we come from? Who are we really?' But for Western Massachusetts duo Home Body, those kind of grand cosmic queries are totally natural, fitting snugly into music that digs deep and shoots for the stars. The soaring voice of Haley Morgan and the throbbing, hovering electronics of Eric Hnatow create songs that are always on the rise, grounded by cardiac beats but unafraid to fly into the sun. On their ambitious second full-length record, Spiritus, Home Body ruminates on darkness, the light, and all the tiny intangible shifts that add up to transformation and change. Three years in the making, the self-produced album is lush with character and detail, displaying moments of ecstatic high energy melting into soft expansion, coaxed along by ghostly textured synths, momentum mounting, spirit settling. Romantic partners for over a decade and collaborators for almost as long, Morgan and Hnatow have been creatively telepathic for a while, and on Spiritus their innate connections produce songs in which every joint and muscle works in consort. 'The pieces of the puzzle fit together like voices,' Morgan sings in 'Lightning,' succinctly describing the duo's tightly-knit music. Home Body aren't afraid to sprawl, though. Their live performances are often dizzying spectacles featuring a home-made light show and elements of modern dance. Spiritus may present only the audio portion of that two-person extravaganza, but in its wide arrangements, sharply-honed turns, and ever-ascending moods, Home Body's music is as three dimensional as real life." --Marc Masters, 2019

Guitarist and vocalist Iván Fariñas de Armas is the "grandfather" of Cuban rock n' roll. Yes, you heard right, Cuban rock n' roll has an "abuelo" -- maybe you didn't know there even was such a thing as "el rock cubano" -- but there is, and even if he's not a household name, Iván Fariñas should be, as he's extremely talented and is arguably the oldest still practicing rockero from behind The Mango Curtain since he started in the 1950s. He claims to have written and recorded the first Cuban blues-rock tune in English -- over 40 years ago. Fariñas founded his current group Viento Solar ("Solar Wind") in 1975 and was not able to record his music officially until the late 1990s. Though his recordings are known somewhat in Europe and South America, his official physical releases are not distributed beyond Cuba and he remains undiscovered in the United States. Now for the first time outside of Cuba, Ivan's intriguing life story and a selection of recordings of his long-lived band Viento Solar will finally be made available for the world to enjoy, thanks to Peace & Rhythm and Feeding Tube Records. Bloomer Plástico collects rare versions of some of Fariñas best compositions, recordings unheard outside Cuba that come from several "maketas" ("maquetas" or "demos") that pre-date his official studio productions and were recorded on reel-to-reel tape from 1996-2001, though some of the songs were originally composed in the '60s and '70s when rock was largely an underground phenomenon on the island. The collection ranges from metallic heavy rock with a punky edge to blues-rock, with a sprinkling of psychedelic and even some distinctly Cuban touches. Includes CD and full liner notes, rare photos, and lyrics.

MAKU Soundsystem's fifth release 5 Fuegos finds the Brooklyn-based, self-proclaimed "immigrant beat" band with a fresh new stripped down sound of five players: bass, guitar, drums, percussion, and vocals. Appropriately, the emphasis is on the beat, and while the brass section and keyboards are now gone, the principle vocalists Liliana Conde (who plays electronic percussion as well) and bassist Juan Ospina are still leading the charge with their stirringly emotional voices out front. And as on their last Peace & Rhythm release The Mix, the dynamic pair of Liliana and Juan are supported by guitarist Camilo Rodríguez, Andrés Jiménez on drum kit, and master percussionist Moris Cañate on tambor alegre (folkloric Colombian hand drum) with all three sharing backing vocals. 5 Fuegos means "Five Fires" and is named for the five members of the band as well as the five songs on the record. The EP features five smoking psychedelic tunes full of originality, hot rocking Afro-funk and deep Colombian roots, each one energized by a burning inner light. This limited edition record also contains two bonus instrumental versions to inspire MCs and remixers. Yellow/splatter/black vinyl with download card.

Peace & Rhythm present a reissue of Orquesta El Macabeo's Salsa Macabra, originally released in 2010. When Salsa Macabra was first released on an unsuspecting public in Orquesta El Macabeo's home country of Puerto Rico, it generated an aural and intellectual charge of electricity that challenged the status quo of mainstream, romantic, and popular folkloric Puerto Rican music, and flaunted accepted norms of what constituted contemporary high-budget commercial salsa and even "salsa dura" (hard salsa). Independently produced in a small studio in the band's home turf of Trujillo Also, the record's irreverent attitude, indie spirit, and brash playing was a shot across the bow to a market that had grown complacent with "bedroom" and Teflon pop salsa that was the norm in an industry overwhelmed by the success of reggaeton and bachata. The lo-fi Goth aesthetics, sense of irony, and dark humor, as well as social critique that permeate through Salsa Macabra connects them to the DIY, metal, and punk cultures, a musical kinship that at this point has become a cliché when describing Macabeo, even though they first deemed themselves as "rockeros con guille de salseros" on this album (a Puerto Rican slang way of saying they are rocker "wannabe" salsa players). Salsa Macabra's raw "garage salsa" -- all originals -- tells stories of love and heartbreak, of rackets and tricksters, of pride and deception, nightlife and consumerism. To this day the band is known for their uncompromising commitment to the DIY aesthetic and independent business model and with every passing year their audience and reputation grows, mainly because they have managed to hit a nerve, connect to salseros craving that old-school sound and message but also something that speaks to their own contemporary experiences in an unadulterated and honest manner. This then is the album that started it all, with several tunes that have become anthems in the ensuing years. The reason for reissuing the album now is that originally it was not mixed and mastered, and the album came out in an extremely limited pressing, with the wrong artwork. The recording has now been properly mastered, with a quality vinyl pressing, the original artwork restored, an insert that features full credits and lyrics, and new liner notes on the back.

In a time when people need to come together more than ever, Big Mean Sound Machine is spreading positivity through communal dance by creating music that moves people of all ages and backgrounds. The ten-piece New York based band breaks new sonic ground and creates a unique flavor of instrumental music with their fourth full-length studio album, Runnin' For The Ghost. While on tour, BMSM opened a new chapter when the band had the honor of meeting and playing with master drummer Tony Allen (pioneer and co-creator of Afrobeat with Fela Kuti and the Africa 70). His dream of seeing Afrobeat music spread globally, to become bigger than any one person or any one group, motivated Big Mean to carry the torch of original dance music into the 21st century. Though traditional Afrobeat has had a major influence on Big Mean Sound Machine, the music on Runnin' For The Ghost reaches far beyond tradition and pushes the band's sound in new ways through the mixing and blending of many genres, keeping with the spirit that inspired Allen and Kuti to create their own style in the first place. On Runnin' For The Ghost, Big Mean continues to harness their collective creativity as the majority of the conception, arrangement, and production came from within the band. To push forward into new creative territory, while recording Runnin' For The Ghost, the band tried a different approach than usual, by learning, arranging, and recording certain tracks in a single day, crafting the music spontaneously in the studio. This new collaborative approach shines through on the standout track "Van Chatter". The song delves into the realm of West African highlife and Central African soukous with articulate and fast moving guitar sounds, alongside a call-and-response horn melody, creating a lively conversation between tradition and innovation. Another highlight is the lead single, "Seeing The Bigger Picture", which incorporates Afro-Cuban percussion patterns and a driving, melodic bass groove that support an uplifting horn melody and a swirling analog synthesizer solo. Each band member's unique musical voice serves as a thread in a seamlessly intertwined fabric of sound, creating an anthem for Big Mean's mission to move people. Cover artwork by Pierce Marratto. Trans-Oceanic, the long-anticipated record from Miami's Spam Allstars, is chock-full of tropical electro space-funk spiced with a heady dose of Cuban flavors. The six-piece Spam Allstars have been at the forefront of Miami's culturally blended, highly creative musical scene for twenty years. Formed by the multi-talented Andrew Yeomanson, aka DJ Le Spam, to create electronic descargas (Latin jam sessions), the band's unique sound was incubated in a live setting while in residence in the Cuban-themed nightclub Hoy Como Ayer on Calle Ocho in Miami's Little Havana. Le Spam and his Allstars take their inspiration from the fabled improvisational Cuban jam sessions of the 1950s and '60s, deftly mixing them with funk, dub, electro, rock and hip-hop elements that reflect the city's multi-cultural makeup. Through the course of six albums, international touring, and interesting collaborations with the likes of Phish side project Vida Blue, New World Symphony, and Rumberos de la 8, this cosmically jamming dance ensemble seamlessly combines various traditions and enlightens in ways you won't find anywhere else. Trans-Oceanic offers up a tasty batida (tropical fruit shake) of funk, rumba, charanga (a traditional old-school Cuban dance orchestra with flute and violin lineup), electro beats, fat bass, and bouncy brass that leads to relentless grooving throughout the proceedings. With its unique instrumental combo of organic and electronic, the Spam sound (expanded here to a nine-piece here) manages to weave together seemingly disparate elements into a seamless whole. The party-rocking title opener sets sail into wild synth, tasteful djembe, and a hand-clapping groove with a sweetly melodic front line of horns and flute. "Cosquilla" (Tickle) is a sexy Afro-Cuban rumba-inspired number with humorous Spanish lyrics, kept in place by funk drums and a rock-steady montuno vamp played on Cuban tres guitar buoyed by some deep pulsing synth-bass. "Ruby Carat" is a funk-charanga hybrid aided by a rumba section and gorgeous trumpet, underpinned by the timbales of Tomás Díaz. The centerpiece is the cosmic R&B number "Satellite" where saxophonist A.J. Hill pulls double duty on soulful vocal around the funky synth and fuzzy guitar solo. "Around The Track" is a great slice of Afro-funk with some rock axe to make it bristle with guitar swagger. The violin is back on the electro-soul cut "La Concha", with some countryish guitar stylings just to flip the script a little. Cover artwork by Francesco Lo Castro. Includes download card with a bonus track.
