This gritty quintet's roots lay in North Carolina, but they made their name in Long Island. Their sole album was recorded in 1969, and originally issued in January 1970. Produced by Vinny Testa (best-known for his association with Frijid Pink), it's a hard-edged mixture of originals and covers, with plenty of fuzz guitar and meaty organ. It makes its long-overdue return to CD here, complete with background notes.

The complicated life of this legendary R&B outfit was almost over when this, their penultimate album, appeared in 1970. Astonishingly, by then they were reduced to a duo consisting of original bassist Alan Henderson and U.S. vocalist/percussionist Jerry Cole. It ranges from pounding psychedelia ("I Keep Singing") and snotty garage punk ("Lonely Weekends," a shameless rewrite of "Gloria") to furious rock and roll ("Jo Ann") and even a country ballad ("Take a Little Time"). As the original sleeve notes declared: "The THEM sound combines the typical British style with an air of mystery and an atmosphere of excitement... mythical, mystical, Oriental, African, electronic, and computer rhythms included."

In 1971, following the departure of his bandmate Jerry Cole, bassist Alan Henderson joined forces with U.S. guitarist Jim Parker and drummer John Stark to make this lost power trio classic -- the last to be issued under the legendary Them moniker. It opens with a searing medley of the Them classics "Gloria" and "Baby Please Don't Go," boasting superb interplay and savage psychedelic guitar throughout. Elsewhere, Stark and Parker flex their songwriting muscles on a series of powerful compositions, and even an acid-folk number. Like its equally-overlooked predecessor, this lost classic is guaranteed to find favor with fans of top-end garage rock.

180 gram vinyl version. Formed in March 1972 by former Jimi Hendrix Experience bassist Noel Redding, in the aftermath of a debilitating fall at Frank Zappa's home, this short-lived power trio also featured former Rare Earth guitarist Rod Richards and Redding's Fat Mattress bandmate Leslie Sampson on drums. Their sole album is a crunching hard rock collection that was praised on release that July -- but the band split soon afterwards, making it a lost piece of the jigsaw for Hendrix fans, and a must-hear for all lovers of proto-metal. Housed in a gatefold sleeve.

Mario Schifano was a leading Italian pop artist, and a friend of The Rolling Stones and other prominent 1960s countercultural figures. Inspired by Andy Warhol's association with The Velvet Underground, in 1967 he decided to sponsor a band. The album that resulted combines a lengthy improvisation with five shorter, psychedelic-influenced tracks, and is a landmark in the development of Italian rock. Pressed in tiny quantities, it was released in November 1967 (with artwork designed by Schifano), and original copies have sold for thousands of Euros, making this long-awaited CD reissue especially welcome. If formed in 1969 as a British answer to U.S. jazz-rock bands such as Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. After three years of intensive touring (sharing stages with Miles Davis, Cream, Traffic, Yes and others), and several albums, the original line-up splintered in 1972. The following year, founding member and sax/flute virtuoso Dick Morrissey formed a new line-up to record Double Diamond. Boasting a more progressive sound (with prominent Moog synthesizer), it was only issued in Germany, making it a rare and collectable piece of the jazz-rock jigsaw today.

Recorded in Los Angeles over four months in 1970, this double album is one of the most personal and involving statements to have emerged from California's psychedelic underground. Backed by a fine band including Daryl Dragon (later to find fame as half of The Captain & Tennille) and Frank Zappa sideman Don Preston, Smith shows himself to have been a remarkably wide-ranging and appealing songwriter. Though it described itself as "haunting, eerie, mystical, even at times a little frightening to those outside the shadowy half-world of the occult," this was, in fact, the product of a drunken overnight jam in London by cult underground hard rockers Zior, held in the summer of 1971. A tough collection of organ and guitar-fuelled rockers, it's sure to appeal to fans of other early '70s British proto-metallers such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, High Tide, Leaf Hound and others.
