Originally released on CD as part of the 40th anniversary Henry Cow Box and reissued here for the first time on vinyl, these high-quality Swedish Radio live recording, made in 1977, include previously unreleased material including Tim Hodgkinson's "Erk Gah," a long, epic, large scale composition considered as one of Cow peaks, a breathtaking rendition of Phil Ochs' "No More Songs" -- in fact the only real song ever played by Henry Cow -- and Fred Frith's "The March," plus the legendary "Ottawa Song" and other untitled free improvised pieces. Over an hour of outstanding experimental rock music performed by the Henry Cow original lineup: Dagmar Krause (vocals), Fred Frith (guitar, violin, xylophone), Lindsay Cooper (bassoon, flute), Tim Hodgkinson (organ, sax), John Greaves (or Georgie Born) (bass, cello), and Chris Cutler (drums). Henry Cow's natural habitat was the stage and the real-time pressure of public performance, because it was there that the music could live, breathe and evolve. All music taken from the original radio tapes and re-mastered by Bob Drake. The album contains printed inner sleeves with full notes by Frith, Cutler and Hodgkinson, and photos.

Reissue, originally released in 1976 and reissue in 2012. This collection offers a snapshot of Henry Cow as audiences would have heard it in the year before. In the chronology, Concerts came between In Praise of Learning (1975) and Western Culture (1978) -- that is, after Virgin had lost interest in releasing any more Henry Cow studio records and before the band quit to make one of its own. It was also the year of the "merger" with Robert Wyatt for a series of concerts in which compositions were shared -- the last show, in Rome, was also Robert's last public performance. From its earlier records, the band was known for its rather complex compositional work. This double-LP for the first time gave serious space to the improvisations that accounted for maybe a third of any of its lengthy stage performances.

Vinyl reissue of an album originally released in 2015. While most ensembles are driven by personalities, the Necks are powered by an idea. A very large and simple idea -- which now seems completely obvious... but only because the Necks thought of it and made it work. Now their pleasure is sequentially to re-imagine and explore that idea -- the prime directive of which seems to be to be that each unfolding step and every passing detail of any performance be allowed to evolve organically out of the musical conditions established at its moment of departure. In other words, you are in the territory of chaos and catastrophe theory; of hurricanes and butterfly wings... And, since one can never step twice into the same river, each beginning has led to wildly unpredictable and variant outcomes; and imperceptibly: you never hear the changes until somehow they have already happened. "We end up," Lloyd Swanton writes, "in a very different place from whatever our initial notion ... had been." In the case of Vertigo, you are dropped straight into an almost Feldmanesque musical universe, in which sounds -- seemingly disconnected -- are already there; creating space rather than inhabiting it. Then, without trying, they mutate. Not mechanically and not according to any pre-determined process -- because it's always clear that what you hear is being played by human beings; that it's music. A special kind of music that is not pushy or demanding or demonstrative, but rather co-operative, spatial, ambiguous. A music that leaves room for its listeners.

Recorded at the legendary Cold Storage studio in London and first released in 1986 this is one of the greatest chapters in the '80s post-Henry Cow/Art Bears era. News From Babel was the song project inaugurated by two ex-Henry Cow, Lindsay Cooper (bassoon, sopranino and alto saxophone, keyboards) and Chris Cutler (drums, electrics) plus Zeena Parkins (harp, electric harps, accordion). A band that created a totally new sound as result of the combination of unusual instruments and arrangements. A highly integrated mixture of avant-rock, chamber music, and Brecht-Eisler cabaret-oriented songs, not much like anything else recorded before or since. Letters Home is the band's second album and it features contributions by Bill Gilonis (The Work) on bass and guitar and vocals appearances from four master singers such as Robert Wyatt, Dagmar Krause, Phil Minton, and Sally Potter. This is the art of extended song form at its peak and it's of course highly recommended to anyone looking for adventurous new sounds. Remastered by Bob Drake, this is the first-ever vinyl reissue with full texts and illustrations enclosed.

ReR Vinyl present a reissue of Picchio dal Pozzo's Abbiamo Tutti I Suoi Problemi, originally released in 1980. One of the most original, impressive and highly respected of all the experimental groups to have come out of Italy in the 1970s, Picchio dal Pozzo were also one of the early invitees to the canonical Recommended Sampler, and would have been in RIO, had RIO lasted another year -- and had the group not folded up and disappeared before anyone had realized it was there. In the last decade the record was reissued briefly in Japan, then It disappeared again. Here is is, remastered and back into the public domain where it belongs. Copying no one, though, there is some Zappa influence, Picchio had a unique and highly developed style of composition that was not only out of step with its own time but which sounds contemporary still. Highly composed and devoid of jazz phrasing and riffs with solos, this record achieves maximum musical effect with minimum instrumental means through close attention to timbre, dynamics, and expressed tempi and a kind of deep complexity that sounds simple but changes with each listening. A lot of ideas subtly developed -- rather than experimented with; a one-off classic. 180 gram vinyl.

Dating from 1974, and following on from the re-release of Leg End, this is the second in the label's series of vinyl reissues of the original Virgin albums. Geoff Leigh had left the group and Lindsay Cooper joined on bassoon, oboe, flute, and soprano sax. The mix was more "live" than Leg End, with the drums much more up front. The first half is highly composed material, with some of the Cow's best loved tunes, like "Half Asleep Half Awake" and "Bittern Storm Over Ulm". For the second half the material was all written in the studio, using loops, varispeed tapes and electronics, and superimposing live improvisation and composed passages.

Water Messages On Desert Sand was the very first sound creation from the Italian avant-garde duo of Roberto Musci and Giovanni Venosta. A classic work in the genre, released by Chris Cutler's Recommended Records in 1987. Back in the mid-eighties, Musci and Venosta, both on sampler, synthesizer, guitar, piano, effects, and tapes were masters in overlaying and constructing rhythmic and harmonic pictures of transparent sound from electronic, acoustic, and documentary source, taking ethnic field recordings (from Africa, Indonesia, Asia, India) as their thematic center. Water Messages finds place in the realm of Eno and Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (1981) but far more accomplished and developed. A rich moving and still very stimulating work and an essential purchase for anyone interested in adventurous modern art informed by ethnic music and sound explorations. In two words: highly recommended.
