Following the release of Seamonsters in 1991 the Guardian newspaper noted that: "Engineer Steve Albini has given The Wedding Present considerable weight, with Gedge's voice trickling between banks of scowling guitars," and went on to feature the LP in its list of "1,000 albums to hear before you die". Despite its uncompromising sound the album reached No. 13 in the British album charts and has been hailed as a classic.

Locked Down And Stripped Back features home recordings of Wedding Present classics, along with two previously unreleased songs: "You're Just A Habit That I'm Trying To Break" and "We Should Be Together". The former is the first fruit of David Gedge's songwriting partnership with Wedding Present guitarist Jon Stewart (of Sleeper fame) whilst the latter was originally written (but never released) by Sleeper themselves. This new Wedding Present version features Louise Wener on vocals. With each band member recording and filming their parts at home under lock-down restrictions, the recording process was far from easy, but the end result illustrates splendidly how The Wedding Present have adapted to the impact of COVID-19. David Gedge says: "As the summer of 2020 wore on it became increasingly obvious that At The Edge Of The Sea --my annual festival in Brighton -- was sadly going the way of other live music events. Following its cancellation, I decided to replace it with an 'online' version, presented live from my own living room and featuring home-recorded videos from many of the artists that had appeared at the festival over the years. For The Wedding Present's contribution, we picked twelve tracks to re-work in a 'semi-acoustic' style, and it was fascinating to see how stripped-back arrangements brought out different aspects of the songs. The Seamonsters track 'Blonde' was a prime example of this, with a 'just-two-guitars' approach resulting in a naïve and stark-sounding interpretation. In addition to the brilliant contributions from Louise and Jon from Sleeper, my long-time writing associate Terry de Castro fired over contributions from Los Angeles and, fresh from finishing her first Such Small Hands solo album, Wedding Present bass player Melanie Howard took over lead vocals for a version of 'Sports Car'."

It was early 2008 and The Wedding Present were in Chicago, recording their seventh album, El Rey (MFO 43904CD). But they had also recently completed a successful "twentieth anniversary" concert tour for their debut LP George Best (1987), and having played that entire album dozens of times live, it was fresh in their minds and under their fingers. So, after they'd wrapped up recording El Rey, David Gedge suggested they lay down a "live" version of George Best in the same studio. After all, the equipment was already set up and the band were on fire. Steve Albini, with whom they were recording, initially wasn't too keen on the idea, but David assured him it would be quick and easy. Albini grudgingly caved. But David was right; it was quick... recorded live, more like an early Beatles LP or a Wedding Present Peel Session than a long drawn-out modern recording with a bunch of overdubs and multi-tracked layering. One could almost imagine that this is the version of George Best that David would have liked to have recorded back in 1987. It is just so well done... as you'd expect, of course, with Albini at the controls. But you can also feel David's 20 years older, self-guiding the new recording with experience and confidence. Everything is bigger... the drums on the original recording were played live, but were done on a "Simmons" electronic drum kit. The combination of Albini's recording and the ultra-talented Graeme Ramsay on "real" drums brings these frantic songs to life. However, the real difference comes out in the way those super-fast, ever-jangly guitars sound... they're warmer, they're rockier, they're more modern. More... Albini! To round everything off with another contemporary twist, multi award-winning mixer/producer Andrew Scheps -- last heard on The Wedding Present's ground-breaking Going, Going... album (SCOPITONE 066CD/LP, 2016) -- enthusiastically agreed to mix the finished recordings, having heard the original LP for the first time in his living room in Los Angeles in 2012, when he was mixing The Wedding Present's eighth studio album in 2012, Valentina (SCOPITONE 037CD).

In the summer 2014, I traveled across the USA with photographer Jessica McMillan and we made some atmospheric short films to accompany the tracks. Since then it's been a case of progressing through the music, trying all sorts of ideas, seeing how they work set against the visuals." Uncharacteristically, the album opens with four hauntingly beautiful instrumental songs, including the cinematic "Sprague" and the captivating "Marblehead". Going, Going... then takes a head-long dash through tracks such as "Two Bridges", "Birdsnest", "Kill Devil Hills" and "Broken Bow", all perfectly executed in classic Wedding Present fashion; a jangle of clanging guitars, a squeal of feedback and a rush of adrenaline. With "Little Silver", "Bear", "Lead" and "Rachel" he proves yet again that he is a virtuoso when it comes to the bittersweet love song; his knack for a simple turn of phrase perfectly articulating the banalities and ecstasies of a relationship. Whilst they are the undoubted masters of frenetic indie-pop, The Wedding Present re-route momentarily on "Emporia" and "Wales" before ultimately immersing the listener in an epic album finale with "Santa Monica". Throughout this enchanting album, ambient soundscapes and orchestral pop arrangements jostle for position with layers of feedback drenched guitars, pummeling drums and a truly massive bass sound as the band plays some of the heaviest material they have ever recorded. The films that accompany each track are a mesmerizing collection of moving photographs. The rippling water in "Marblehead" delicately draws us into the melody while "Two Bridges" takes us onto a Manhattan street corner and exudes New York City in the summertime. The feeling of a road trip is present throughout with the rivers and lakes of the mid-west and the deserts of the south-west before the album ends with the sun setting over the Santa Monica mountains.

2015 release. David Gedge's Cinerama presents its glorious version of the 2012 album Valentina by Gedge's band The Wedding Present (SCOPITONE 037CD). In 1997 David Gedge decided to take a break from The Wedding Present. But he didn't take a break from music. Instead, he elected to take a different musical path and write songs inspired by his love of film scores and classic pop music. Thus, Cinerama was born. Together with his then-girlfriend Sally Murrell and Wedding Present co-writer Simon Cleave, he went on to record three amazing Cinerama albums and celebrate them with multiple live tours until The Wedding Present ultimately returned in 2004. In 2012, The Wedding Present released their ninth studio album, Valentina. But the critical acclaim that followed wasn't quite enough for Gedge. He had long been harboring a dream to record one version of an album as The Wedding Present and another, with reimagined songs, as Cinerama. He chose Valentina for this project. The initial plan was release the two versions simultaneously, but it was soon realized that this was a project that would take years to accomplish. So the releases were staggered to allow time to complete the complex Cinerama arrangements. From the first blast of horns to the last twinkle of piano keys, Cinerama's version of Valentina sparkles. It is a total departure from The Wedding Present's version, of course, which is how it was always meant it to be. Gedge recruited Spanish indie legend Pedro Vigil to assist with arrangements and add some Las Vegas-style swagger. So, yes, David Gedge -- the alt-rock guitar-hero -- absolutely shines in his alternate guise as a chanteur. His carefully crafted lyrics and perfect vocal melodies find a natural home in this part-orchestral, part-big band setting, enabling his pure talent to show through, unfettered by the traditional wall of raging Wedding Present guitars.

"I'm From Further North Than You" is classic Wedding Present, from its over-wordy title with a hint of a North-South divide to the sad story of the end of a relationship between unhappy people. More surprising though -- to the dissenters at least -- is that it's better than anything The Wedding Present ever released in their '90s incarnation. This is because David Gedge brought his experiences writing, recording, and singing beautiful, string-laden, lush pop music with his Cinerama project to bear on the mid-2000s Wedding Present recordings, proving himself, if there was still any doubt, to be one of the best songwriters in Britain. "I'm From Further North Than You: is perfect guitar pop with a twist, grown up without ever straying toward the embarrassing territory of maturity. The DVD includes a charming video for "I'm From Further North Than You" featuring Gedge and a mystery girl pacing the streets of Edinburgh and reciting lyrics from past Gedge songs into their cell phones, as well as an eerie video for the rougher, edgier single "Interstate 5." "Perfect Blue (Three Minute Film)" was shot in Amsterdam at a semi-acoustic performance by David Gedge and (Wedding Present guitarist) Simon Cleave and also includes footage shot by Gedge himself. The videos on the DVD single were all made by Tim Middlewick, who directed Get Up And Go, the acclaimed 2004 Cinerama DVD.

The music of Japanese legends-in-the-making Toquiwa (previously known as Pinky Piglets) is, in the band's own words, characterized by "Catchy riffs, addictive melodies and energetic performances you can't miss. We burst onto the stage!" The Wedding Present caught these gifted all-girl rockers in Japan and fell in love with the energy of their live performances and the earworm-catchiness of their songs. Subsequently, The Wedding Present have practically adopted the band, inviting them to their annual mini-festival in Brighton and their European and North American tours and releasing their self-titled debut album on David Gedge's own Scopitones label, previously reserved for the releases of Wedding Present members. Gedge on Toquiwa: "I have never seen audiences react so positively to one of our support bands before. At first they just appear to be a cute Japanese band but, when they start to play, everyone's jaw hits the floor!" Toquiwa roars into life with "Tokyo Merry-Go-Round" and "Roll The Dice," which channels The Strokes for two minutes and 38 seconds of pop rock perfection. "Brain Party" thumps in your head like a rock disco -- close your eyes and find yourself in a Tokyo night club. The Japanese love of a ballad is not left out of this album; the unexpectedly tender lyrics of "The Rain Song" are a breather from the heart-pounding pop-punk-rock of the rest of the album. Toquiwa only let up for a moment, though; their biggest hit, "Give Me A Chocolate," comes in with AC/DC guitar riffs placed over the sugary-sweet vocals of vocalist Auska. They close the album with their ode to The Wedding Present, an inspired cover of "Kennedy."
