SVET 012EP
|
Svetlana Industries presents an EP from Tropics. The title-track is an ear-worm. Hinging on a melancholy vocal couplet over a simple chord sequence on Rhodes, this one grows into a banger. "Invitation" is upbeat and coated in an '80s sheen, calling to mind the sunshine pop textures of John Talabot or even Phoenix. "Ophelia" is a mini-epic, a strong vocal melody combined with a fully-realized arrangement. Finally, Kelpe's remix of "Popup Cinema" is one of the best things he's ever done.

These productions from Kelpe feature longer workouts leading the opening of each side, followed by shorter, more beat-based works. Kicking off with a rolling, bouncing rhythm played live on kitchen pots and pans, the title track's forward motion belies its relatively relaxed speed. "Double Punt" is an elegant and more serious statement, while Neon Jung's remix of "Bags of Time" is just breathless, conjuring up a dizzy vortex of sound. "City" is a quiet belter with heavy, heavy, heavy analog bass.

Kelpe's productions are known for being tough and direct. "I Felt Fuzzy" is something of a new direction for Kelpe, combining his usual solid electronic 4/4 platform with a light, airy organic feel and an ethereal female vocal. "Cola Mine" brings a darker flavor while "Frosty Kiss" features a heavy, trembling synth bass monotone, then 40 seconds in it launches into a classic Kelpe banger. Remixes by BNJMN, Cupp Cave and Naïve Machine.

The next new record from Serbia's Svetlana Industries is the debut of Nightwave aka Maya Medvesek, previously known as 8Bitch. This EP represents the fruits of that labor, a fully-rounded release rich in melody combining two dancefloor melters with two more mellow tunes and a seriously heavy remix from Unknown To The Unknown aka DJ Haus of Hot City. DJ support from SBTRKT, Addison Groove, LuckyMe, Jackmaster, Kavsrave, and SlackB, among others.
