LP version. Gatefold cover; printed insert and download code. Teranga Beat presents Ormenion, a record by the group Evritiki Zygia. Ormenion is a historical region that dates back to the Byzantine Empire. It is the northernmost inhabited region of Greece, where the last railway station of the country is located. During the 1920s, it was inhabited by refugees coming from the North and Eastern Thrace. Immigration is central to the history of the region of Thrace, where many songs refer to refugees and moving populations. The name of this particular place was selected as the album title due to its delicate cultural and geographic status: Ormenion coincides with the borders of three different countries (Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey) and its history counts several waves of immigration that gave way to cultural and even linguistic exchange -- elements that obviously left their mark on the group. The group Evritiki Zygia was founded in 2007 by five musicians who played mostly in local festivals, their main concern being the preservation and evolution of the Thracian musical tradition. The collaboration with Teranga Beat helped this project evolve even further. Forms of arrangement different than the ones used in local feasts and festivals, were introduced giving more space to the dynamics of the instruments and allowing musicians to show both their improvisational and compositional skills. The distinctively psychedelic element of Thracian music was enhanced with the introduction of the CRB-Diamond 800 organ and the Moog, giving the whole project a hybrid sound with a unique identity. The album contains both covers of traditional songs and original compositions. The band's highest point was their appearance at the Womex Festival in 2018, where their music was presented for the first time in front of an international audience. Ormenion was recorded on an analog 24-track tape Otari MX 80 in two sessions that took place on May 18 and 19 2019. It is a live recording that captures the energy of the group's live performances. CD version comes in digipak with slipcase, and includes a booklet with photos and liner notes outlining the story of the band.

LP version. Comes in gatefold sleeve; Includes insert and download. Teranga Beat presents the second volume of Kyriakos Sfetsas' 1976 Greek Fusion Orchestra project. Sfetsas' vision behind the formation of GFO was to create a piece of work that would expand the boundaries of Greek traditional music. The result was a progressive-jazz fusion masterpiece comprising complex and intriguing compositions, performed by Athens' best musicians of the day. Following the success of Vol. 1 (TBCD 022CD/TBLP 022LP, 2018), Vol. 2 is a compilation of musical pieces Sfetsas recorded with the group right upon the completion of the Vol. 1 material. Vol. 2 is still reflective of his ambition of bringing together progressive jazz and traditional music, but it does so in a different manner. Although the element of traditional music remains present, it does not provide the compositional foundation for the songs (e.g. most pieces are no longer based exclusively on traditional musical forms). Jazzier and more complex than the first volume, Vol. 2 has a darker feeling, presenting Sfetsas not only as a musical experimentalist, but also as a demanding and distinctive composer who truly puts his musicians to the test. The recordings on this album are previously unreleased and form only a small part of his overall body of work with the GFO. The music was originally recorded stereo on reel tape with highest standards for the time, with the modern mastering process highlighting even more their original sound quality. The result is a truly impressive and pure audiophile album.

Teranga Beat present composer Kyriakos Sfetsas and his Greek Fusion Orchestra, an artist with a truly multi-faceted body of work. Sfetsas formed GFO in 1976, in order to accomplish an ambition dating back to his 1960s avant-garde period in Paris: to create a piece of work that would expand the boundaries of Greek traditional music. The result is a progressive-jazz fusion masterpiece comprising complex and intriguing compositions, and performed by Athens's best musicians of the day. Sfetsas grew up in the island of Lefkada where he studied classical music from a very young age at the local conservatory. At the same time he was genuinely connected to traditional music and especially to the sound of clarinet, the lead instrument in the region's folk music. From a young age Sfetsas would perform with Gypsy orchestras in local feasts. It was this experience that inspired him to create the GFO after his return from Paris in 1975. Sfetsas founded the orchestra while working at the National Radio, an orchestra comprising mostly members of the Variety Music Orchestra who had a solid background in both classical and traditional music. In that way he was able to realize his ambition, something he could not do in Paris since it was impossible to find musicians trained in both musical cultures. The recordings on Greek Fusion Orchestra Vol. 1, forming only a small part of his overall body of work with GFO, are previously unreleased. The music was recorded stereo on reel tape and with high standards for the time, with the current mastering process highlighting even more the quality of the recordings. 2017 repress. LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Includes printed insert and download code. Ethiopian minimal wave from 1986. Teranga Beat presents Yishak Banjaw's first international release. Yishak Banjaw is a composer and keyboard player from Addis Ababa known to his country for his innovative compositions and unique sound. His ability to transform traditional Ethiopian songs into spacey minimal-wave gems creates an ultra-hypnotic and psychedelic atmosphere. Love Songs Vol. 2 was recorded in 1986 at Yishak's house, while he was working for the Police Band in Eritrea. It was released by an Eritrean label on cassette and was also distributed in Ethiopia. However, due to the shaky political situation, Yishak was forbidden to travel anywhere outside his country, including Ethiopia. Consequently, Love Songs Vol. 2 remained a very obscure and neglected musical experiment, until now. Yishak has released seven albums on cassette but, unlike many Ethiopian musicians, he has never managed to reach a wider and international audience. On this album, Yishak Banjaw chose to play everything on a small Casio PT, "a keyboard for kids" as he proudly mentions. He recorded the whole album live, directly to his tape recorder. Although his main instrument was a Godwin keyboard, he actually preferred to rent the Casio from a friend, as he was blown away by the way it sounded. This choice alone reveals a genuine talent that dared to go beyond what his colleagues were doing at that time.

Gatefold double LP version. Includes download code. Teranga Beat proudly presents the second volume of previously unreleased early-'80s recordings by Senegalese band Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès, demonstrating their ability to move from Mbalax to Afro-Cuban and Afro-jazz ballads without losing any of their original psychedelic sound and unique identity. Five out of these seven tracks feature Bassirou Sarr, a truly exceptional singer. Whether he's singing a ballad or some explosive Mbalax, his voice is always full of emotion. One of the two other tunes, a great Latin cover sung by Assane Camara, shows the true skill of Dieuf-Dieul; the other, a powerful Mbalax track sung by the great griot Gora Mbaye, displays his strong links to the tradition of Senegal. These three singers, together with bandleader and guitarist Pape Seck, combined traditional rhythms from all the regions of Senegal with fuzz guitars, horn sections, and hallucinatory percussion to create an explosive mixture of electric psychedelia and the wisdom of local musical traditions. Aw Sa Yone Vol. 2 includes the rest of the recordings from the early-'80s session featured on Vol. 1 (TBCD 017CD, 2013), plus three tracks from a lost 1981 recording. Mastered and mixed from the original tapes. At the time of this release, Dieuf-Dieul are back together for the first time since 1983, preparing for their first international tour to prove that their fame is not merely an urban legend. Bassirou Sarr: vocals; Assane Camara: vocals; Gora Mbaye: vocals; Pape Seck: guitar; Cheikh Ndiaye: drums; Ibou Diallo: bass; Doudou Leo: rhythm guitar; El Hadji Diouf: percussion; El Hadji Ngom: percussion.

Teranga Beat proudly presents Dexter Johnson & Le Super Star De Dakar in their last performance before their departure to Abidjan in 1969. Mastered from the original tape, this recording captures the energy and quality of these most spectacular performers. The group was led by the inimitable Dexter Johnson, a saxophonist whose unique timbre influenced generations of horn players in Senegal and who can stand with pride next to the great jazz musicians. Nigerian-born, he came to Dakar through Bamako and left his mark from the first night he arrived in the city with Guinean Jazz, in 1957. Later he played with the Star Band De Dakar and finally with the Super Star De Dakar, where he made a great duo with the singer Laba Sosseh in the club À l'Étoile. Live à l'Étoile features many great Afro-Cuban classics, two killer boogaloos and a cover of Wilson Pickett's "Something You Got." The recording also shows for the very first time Dexter's capacity after the departure of Laba Sosseh. This gave him the opportunity to become the absolute frontman and to have singers John Gomis, and William & Maīssa Ngom accompany his tenor saxophone. Includes a booklet with photos and liner notes outlining Dexter's musical career.

Limited double LP version, comes with silk screen print, European '60s style gatefold sleeve, and booklet that includes photos and liner notes outlining Mar's career. All tracks are mastered and mixed from the original recording tapes. Teranga Beat proudly presents Mar Seck, a delicate singer and songwriter who marked the history of Senegalese music. A crossover between Cuban compositions and Senegalese folklore, his songs gave birth to salsa-mbalax, the popular dance music of '70s Senegal that went on to influence a new generation of Senegalese musicians including a young Youssou N'Dour. Featuring 12 tracks recorded over three different sessions, Vagabonde focuses on the best of Mar Seck's career. The first recordings are taken from a raw and unreleased 1969 session at the Dakar National Radio. Recorded with his first group Super Cap-Vert from Rufisque, it captures an 18-year old Mar singing the first version of his now famous composition "Vagabonde." The remaining six tracks from the session include a beautiful cover of Fonseca's "Sibouten." A 1973 live recording is also featured here, made with the Star Band de Dakar in Saint Louis. Previously unreleased, it comes from a time when Mar was establishing his name playing at the legendary Miami Club in Dakar, the "École de Passage" for all great Senegalese musicians. The final two tracks (one of them unreleased) finds Mar accompanied by the most complete band of Senegal, the Number One de Dakar.

Teranga Beat proudly presents Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès in their first-ever edition. Three singers Assane Camara, Bassirou Sarr, and Gora Mbaye, together with their chef d'orchestre and guitar player Pape Seck (an ex-member of Guelewar) compose traditional rhythms from all the regions of Senegal, with fuzz guitars, horn sections and hallucinatory percussion. The result is an explosive mixture of an electric psychedelic sound with the wisdom and superiority of the musical traditions of the region, a crossover of Afro-manding and Afro-jazz, in which each singer guides the 13-member band in a different direction. Even today, this 32 year-old recording sounds futuristic and it is really rather weird that Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès never had the chance to release an actual album. Aw Sa Yone Vol. 1 includes the biggest part of their second recording and included in the package is a booklet with photos and liner notes outlining the group members' careers. There was no other group in Senegal with such a variety of cultural background and a strong identity. Senegalese music at its best.

Teranga Beat proudly presents Royal Band De Thiès in their first-ever and entirely unreleased 1979 recording. Singers and composers James Gadiaga and Secka Will guide you through the sweet melodies, wicked rhythms and vocal traditions of Senegalese music, in a fabulous performance that combines mbalax with Afro-jazz. While many bands in the world claimed the title of "pacesetters," none can stand next to Royal Band De Thiès. The 9-member band with its dynamite percussion and horn sections will twist you like a tornado! Tracks like "Hommage à Mbaye Fall" will take you on a musical journey to the cultural crossroads of Senegal, West Africa's meeting point of European, Latin American and African musical traditions. This real-time, two-microphone recording gives the impression that the group is playing live in front of you, making it hard to believe it dates back 33 years ago. The liner notes of the 12-page CD booklet include more interesting details, outlining James' and Secka's musical careers along with the past and present of the band.
