When one thinks about a Mirage, the first thought that likely comes to mind is the illusion of a well-hydrated paradise in the middle of a hot, arid desert. If you could spin that illusion into a full-on fantasy, a 32-bit utopia with a neon soundtrack, you would have the Mirage presented to you by Marcos Miranda and Ivan Redondo, collectively known as Paradise Phantoms. In musical form, Mirage is deceptively eclectic -- a collection of pulsating dance cuts with a pastel glow, rooted in retro funk, but cleverly spiked with rock and streamlined with pop. The result is a project with equal appeal for classic boogie funk fiends and contemporary dance music enthusiasts alike -- Mirage could hit hard in Ibiza, yet sounds like it was purified in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. Indeed, one of the album's standout cuts declares with no uncertainty that "Prince Was Right". Up-tempo drum machine hits collide with icy FM synths and slick bass grooves as if the year was 1988. Yet, the dynamic arrangements and modern production values remind us that this is brand new music -- the type that sounds as if its creators never forgot a childhood spent playing Sega Genesis in a room lined with NPG & Max Headroom posters. After his stunning introduction to the world of modern funk on Mofak's Drunk Of Funk album (2018), Emcee Originate has taken the baton and is up next to represent his loose-knit musical collective with The Journey. Indeed, the project feels like a continuation of the sleek, Mothership-friendly sounds from Drunk Of Funk, which makes perfect sense, with Mofak himself behind the boards for most of the album's production. The global impact of modern funk is full on display here: Mofak's production feels like it would be right at home on the sun-drenched California streets, yet he hails from Marseille, France, while Originate's casual, conversational flow fits so perfectly, you'd think he was a Snoop protege, yet he hails from Montreal, Quebec, and carries with him the vibrance of the city's bubbling music scene. He intersperses his bars with singing, adding a melodic flair perfect for the dynamic chord progressions and heavy synth bass he rhymes over. Originate speaks to the players, the ladies, and anyone who wishes they were intertwined in that mix. The APX are releasing their highly anticipated self-titled sophomore album Amplified Experiment. Detroit native singer/songwriter Erika Dawn alongside her prodigy multi-talented husband Dee Rhodes are an Atlanta-based electro funk/soul duo collectively known as The APX. Amplified Experiment encores the duo's sound with a 2020 approach, fueled with the influence of the finest traditional '80s and '90s style funk, house, and soul.
