"The title Evolutionism was chosen by Fabrice Lig to foreground his concern and engagement with environmental issues, particularly preservation and harmonious management of the environment, and recycling and re-use of resources and materials. Many of the tracks on this album, indicated by the track titles, are the result of how these modern challenges have affected him personally and been an inspiration to his music making over the past few years, the time which this project has been in production. Belgium's Fabrice Lig is up there with Detroit giants when it comes to pure, scintillating electronic music bursting with ideas and performed with passion. The fact that he's appeared on labels like KMS, 7th City, Playhouse, Kanzleramt and F-Comm speaks for itself, but this album puts him firmly up there in the highest reaches of the techno firmament. The underlying theme is environmentalism and how it affects him. The music is spiritual and vibrant, linked with occasional spoken dissertations. Fabrice can give the dancefloor a good seeing-to on tracks like 'The Power Of A City,' which plants strong female vocals over a contagious house groove, but is most exciting when mining the deepest stratas of his imagination on tracks like 'DDNA' or 'Children Of Galapagos,' one of the year's most euphorically-gorgeous peaks. The collaboration with Ken Ishii, 'Australow-P-Tek Funk' heists Cameo's 'Word Up' and there's a top version of Herbie Hancock's 'Rockit.' It's best to hear the whole journey all in one hearing, so Fabrice's message can shine through and the full impact of his breathtaking musical spectrum can be properly appreciated."

"The new Soul Designer album Evolutionism will be released as 2 individually released 12" EPs with DJ friendly versions, followed by a CD and double album with additional tracks. A1- 'Evolutionism': a brooding slow-burning track that ignites after winding the crowd up to breaking point. A very carefully controlled build up that only a producer of Fabrice Lig's technical ability and soul could achieve. Jean Vanesse (Spiritcatcher) said: '"Evolutionism" was my secret weapon during our recent album tour and I'm still playing it every set. Absolutely incredible track with an amazing rhythm construction! It sounds like a true classic.'"

"The new Soul Designer album from Fabrice Lig, released on Third Ear Recordings. One of the tracks is a cover of Herbie Hancock's 'Rockit.' Soul Designer's cover of 'Rockit' is a dancefloor bomb. Modern dance music rarely covers classic tracks, even though it uses samples from them all the time. Soul Designer's cover of Herbie Hancock's 'Rockit' is a great cover. The other track is called 'The Soul Is Back.' This is a big techno anthem in the grand style. Wait for this." Pressed on clear vinyl.

"What you hold in your hands is from the next wave of electronic musicians from the Great Lakes area of the American Midwest -- the cradle of house music and techno. On the path cut by Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance, Richie Hawtin, DJ T-1000, Mike Dearborn and Green Velvet, Thee Madkatt Courtship and DJ Skull, the artists on this compilation are working their gear to keep the heavy grooves and the driving beats flowing. Several tracks from established composers like DJ ESP Woody McBride (Minneapolis) and L.A. Williams (Detroit) are included because these artists continue to evolve and create interesting work, while their presence provides a link to the origins of the sound. Other well-known names like Jake Fairley, pan/tone, and Mike Shannon, from the highly regarded Canadian scene are also represented. Detroit newcomers, Rex Sepulveda and Punisher (Michelle Hermann), who both played at the Fuse-In Festival, Detroit in 2005, are taking the music in a UR, Jeff Mills, DJ Bone, direction. Cosmic Spore (Mike Brickner), also from Detroit, gives us a similarly uncompromising hard industrial groove. Chicago jackin' house styles are represented and retooled by Woody McBride and Frankie Vega. Chicago's Soultek delivers a deeper Luomo-sounding track, joining the dots with the Toronto sound of Jake Fairley, Mike Shannon, pan/tone, and Toronto newcomers Adam Jay, Dan Lui, Mark Thibideau, Jeff Cochran, Adam Winick, Arthur Oksan, and Adam Marshall. What is remarkable about this compilation, in addition to the exceptional quality and variety of techno music that is maintained across 20 tracks, is that each city both has an identifiable sound which is a sonic representation of the history of techno as it has been encountered by musicians from those cities. And at the same time, geographical proximity means that influences and inspirations clearly flow both ways up, down, and around the I94 and I194 freeways between these great cities. The Detroit sound of UR and post-industrial techno is very evident in the Detroit tracks. The influence of Detroit techno in all its forms, and the German new wave sound pioneered by Force Inc., Force Tracks and Kompakt, is very evident in the Toronto sound. Yet the fact that there is such a vibrant scene in Toronto is obviously due to the proximity of Detroit and Chicago. Get the map out while you're listening to the music and you'll get the picture, literally."

"A live mix of Detroit Beatdown tracks previously released on Third Ear. The mix is compiled by Mike 'Agent X' Clark, Norm Talley, and Delano Smith -- the Detroit Beatdown Crew, and mixed by Norm Talley. The mix opens with Amp Dog Knight and Jovante's remix of Malik Alston's 'Butterfly,' and closes with Carl Craig's remix of Theo Parrish's 'Falling Up.' The mix is not strictly representative of a mix by one of the Beatdown crew, as this mix is comprised solely of Detroit Beatdown releases on Third Ear. Even so, this mix gives a taste of the variety of grooves and sounds that characterizes Detroit Beatdown. From soulful deep house, through minimal beats, dirty grooves and jazz flavours, to pumping Detroit techno, it's all here." Features: Malik Alston, Alton Miller, Norm Talley, Darren Abrams, Mike Clark, Rick Wilhite, Kelli Hand, Theo Parrish.

"Third Ear are very proud to present this superb compilation of new and exclusive tracks from the Premier Cru label. Premier Cru is a label from Detroit, which grew out of a 'jazz/dance/hip hop band called JWQ (Jonathan Williams Quartet). In addition to Premier Cru founder George Katsiris, on guitar. The band also featured future Premier Cru artists Erv Green, Jun Shiina and Jonathan Williams. The band played in and around Detroit and opened up for such acts as De La Soul, Greyboy Allstars, Groove Collective and the James Taylor Quartet. After college, the members moved to various parts of the country but stayed in touch. For the next two years everyone continued to make music, each producing their own tracks by playing all of the instruments over electronically generated drums. All of the artists, the photographer, the package layout designer, Web site designer, even the picture of the Cadillac on the sleeve (it is a soul food joint where you get a free car wash with your purchase), are from Michigan. Only some of the featured soloists are from elsewhere. Originally, George Katsiris compiled Enjoy Detroit to bring together the family of musicians that he had been a part of in Michigan. However, as the album was being put together, he met other people from the D, such as Jason Hogans, and Kenny Flav, who contributed tracks. Wayne Kounty has since found success writing and producing for Mary J. Blige and Busta Rhymes."

"Mysterious cult electronic figures do the right thing on their new record for Third Ear, second home of the Detroit beatdown community. Earthborn is a distinctly insane brew from Why sheep, blending rowdy chanting, and more changes than the dollar rate, over an extended kind of open-ended funk workout. But flip for the juice and its the Planet E man Recloose saying it all here. Beginning with a monster groove of a conga and funk bassline, reminiscent of his monster tune 'I Can't Take It', Matthew Chicoine builds chopped vocal into a wicked cut up of the mighty, old skool Bambaata set staple 'Computer Games' by the Yellow Magic Orchestra, and it just rocks -- just one utterly cool piece of floorfilling acumen."

"Tread are Hiroshi Watanabe and Take Kitahara. Hiroshi Watanabe is better known as Kaito, whose Everlasting album for Kompakt is one of their best-sellers. Hiroshi has also worked as Quadra and Nite System, and will release his eponymous debut album on Third Ear in the Summer of 2003. Tread is recognizable, yet is also very different from Kaito. Tread work within a strictly defined territory. Their's is a true minimalism. Zen music. Tread music has a purity and simplicity that is simply breathtaking. You can tell that every sound has been very carefully selected to evoke a precise mood, to manifest a very particular sensibility. Yet this is beat music. The beat never goes above 115 bpm, and mostly stays around 85-100 bpm. This tempo is dangerous territory for music that is essentially 4-4 House groove driven. Yet, Hiroshi Watanabe, with eight years of experience of living in New York and working with the likes of Evelyn 'Champagne' King, has total control of his House grooves. This is house music like you never imagined: Thumping kick drums never sounded so delicate. This is micro House with a completely different meaning. Take Kitahara is a clothes designer and graphic designer. He and Hiroshi Watanabe begin a track by discussing the mood or emotion, or setting they wish to evoke. Hiroshi Watanabe then lays down the first elements, which are then critiqued by Take Kitamura. Slowly, they build the edifice which becomes the emotion, the mood, the setting. The track. The Tread project is four albums that represent the four seasons. Tread 1 is winter, Tread 2 -- Spring, Tread 3 -- Summer, Tread 4 -- Autumn."
