VDR 015EP

Voodoo Down Records presents the debut 12" of Melbourne-based techno producer JXTPS, who delivers here three powerful cuts of rolling big-room techno. The EP kicks off with a bang with some breakbeat fills that clear the way for heady hypnotic tension on "Become Nothing". The B-side opens with punchy acid stabs and distorted guitar chords on "Untitled 02", and closes beautifully with a creeping early-morning groover on "Mr. Pink".

Voodoo Down co-founder N'conduit presents his third solo release on the label with Latent States. The first release to come out of his new Brooklyn studio, Latent States has three original jams inspired by defunct beverages and dormant memories. From the A1 though the flipside, expect dirty modular basslines, warbly reel-to-reel FX, dusty saturated beats, and spaced out feedback. October, Bristol-based DJ/producer and O.G. Voodoo Down confidant, has contributed an acidic, brain-splitting remix that will take the listener on an interstellar journey through the cosmos.

The 13th Voodoo Down Records release is The Primitive Streak, the sophomore EP by label co-founder Sean Phillips aka 12 x 12. The follow-up to 2014's Kobayashi Maru, this four-track EP is the culmination of honed process and techniques over the past several years to produce a more organic groove-based style of techno. Mostly the work of a sampler and some analog synths, the tracks range from warm broken-beat atmospheres to digital sequences.

The newest 12" on Voodoo Down Records marks the debut appearance of longtime friend of the label Jordan Lieb, aka Black Light Smoke. Jordan played an instrumental part in the NYC label Scissor & Thread. The Depression Sleeping EP is a collection of tracks from his archives from the past decade that have been updated and remixed. The theme of the record is his struggle with sleep and insomnia. Per the artist: "Releasing these songs form my past reflects my effort to embrace myself, the good and the bad, and to channel my personal battles into a creative process."

Voodoo Down Records returns to the compilation series that started it all: Possible Side Effects. Now with a dozen releases under their belt, the founders L'estasi Dell'oro, N'conduit, and 12 x 12 have returned to their roots and this time recruited the prolific Berlin based producer Deadbeat for volume three of the series. Like the first two volumes, it's a slightly chaotic mix of beefy dance floor tools and heady experimentation. The separate personalities shine through more than ever on this release. VDR always strive to keep things interesting.

Andy Harper and Nic Ford present Empirical Evidence as MadderModes. Empirical Evidence is a wholly cinematic piece of work, spread across four tracks that unravel slowly, unified by a theme of pumping syncopated rhythms under sprawling pad and string progressions. It's easy to get lost in the thick arrangements, and the inventive use of samples and melodic elements invite repeat listening. Equally suitable for early morning hours, ultra-deep techno sets, or quiet home listening sessions. Maddermodes have drawn support from top names like Move D and Nick Höppner.

London techno duo Our Mutual Friend (Glenn Middleditch and Mark Leigh) present their debut EP. They're primarily known for their label Mutual Friend Recordings (which made a splash in 2015 with a strong EP from STL) and their monthly Friends of Ours night in Peckham, which has allowed them to hone their live set alongside guests like Jane Fitz and Juju & Jordash. Punta Christo consists of three diverse but complementary tracks; "Punta Christo" is an atmospheric club-ready anchor, "Reverse Polarity" is a rolling bass-and-tom workout, and "Smell of Rain" is a psychedelic slow burner.

The second EP by Voodoo Down head N'conduit takes its name and inspiration from New York's infamous Pumps strip club. Located on the border of Queens and Brooklyn on the English Kills canal, it's one of the last holdouts of seedy and unkempt Brooklyn now that the high-rises and artisanal establishments have taken over. The Pumps EP consists of three original tracks and a remix by LA-4A that are supposed to capture what's left of this world through raw analog sequences and drum programming.
