Duo in the mirror that, in a continuous game of doubling and multiplication, ventures into another world, dense with unexpectedness and vital thrills. Sun Ra and post-rock, as well as Chicago experimentation and echoes of the world of Suzanne Ciani and minimal music, are the hints one can sense while listening to Medea, a journey to the edge and beyond. Star Splitter's new album comes five years after the debut album, a period in which Gabriele Mitelli and Rob Mazurek experimented with the infinite possibilities of this lineup, the length and breadth of Europe, at some of the most important festivals. In complete freedom, a three-day session in the recording studio in Reggio Calabria gave birth to Medea, a dedication, in retrospect, to the film work of Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Axes and layers, but also the axes, for striking and cutting. This work embraces the muscular energy of avant-jazz and delicate and dreamlike introspection. The musical references are to the America of Tim Berne and the Europe of Marc Ducret -- the polyphony and rhythmic pulse of the urban environment. But the connections, even if not strictly musical, reach far; "Axis: Bold as Love" by Jimi Hendrix and "AlasNoAxis," Jim Black's debut album. More than one axis: axes.

Berlin-based Banquet of Consequences is the new sextet led by double bassist Antonio Borghini. In addition to the valuable lesson of Charles Mingus, clear references to Dutch, Italian and South African jazz traditions are mixed in the group. The group's eponymous debut album oscillates between completely improvised works -- a series of numbered "Dialogues" -- and compositions that swing wildly between chaos and tenderness.

This solo could have been titled "16 Caprices for cello." As in Paganini's Caprices, all the techniques and virtuosity of the classical tradition are used here, expanded and enriched by the sounds and research of the contemporary one. However, the approach to the instrument is physical and bodily characteristic of European free improvisation and jazz. But as in Tristan Honsinger, Leroy Jenkins, or in Cage's Freeman Etudes for violin the focus is always the music, whose often hidden corners are uncovered. References to the many traditions encountered, to animals, ethnic sounds, the sound of other instruments, noises and the human voice, are many and are always addressed with a smile on the lips.

Recorded at the historical Kaleidophon Festival in Ulrichsberg (Austria) in 2008, this is the result of the duo meeting between Barre Phillips, one of the most influential bassists in the history of contemporary jazz, and clarinets specialist Giancarlo "Nino" Locatelli one of the most rigorous figures on the Italian creative scene. Dance of the Scorpions consists of four beautiful, dynamic, and well-recorded improvised dialogues between two uncompromising musicians in full power who eventually decided to dedicate the whole album to master improviser Coleman Hawkins.

This live performance, recorded in an ancient church, is based on some of the music conceived over the last few years by saxophone player Francesco Aroni Vigone. The recording location was chosen for its particular acoustics, perfect for a saxophone "solo" and its aptitude for meditation. The performance took place during worship hours, in front of an unusual "audience" in an unusual "liturgy." The pieces are monodic songs that can be traced back mainly to the concept of repetition, but also pay attention to the harmonic overlap provided by the acoustics. Songs that can be associated with different paces and their rhythm. In some cases they are fragments that develop into improvisations as in "Marea" and "Orbita."

The idea for Girotondo is taken from the play of the same name written by Arthur Schnitzler. Like the characters in Schnitzler's text, here the musicians are invited to take part in a series of dialogues in pairs, so as to form a chain, a roundabout: the first with the second, the second with the third, until the last one joins the first, closing the circle. The musicians have been matched by lot to a theater character, so that the duets are the random result. Fazio acts as a guest, an external narrator to the couples, elaborating an electronic introduction that represents the scenic space in which the encounters develop, and a final roundabout in which everyone is involved.
Personnel: Enrico Fazio - project, double bass, electronics; Mario Arcari - oboe; Giancarlo Locatelli - bass clarinet; Alberto Mandarini - trumpet; Francesco Aroni Vigone - alto sax; Valeria Sturba - theremin; Adalberto Ferrari - contrabass clarinet; Gianni Virone - flute; Gianpiero Malfatto - euphonium; Emanuele Parrini - violin; Marco Tardito - baritone sax.

"Every now and then I meet a bull who announces itself with its horns ('Le Corna'). But it doesn't scare me, it moves and dances, it runs away. Archery ('Tiro') is its favourite ('Rito') hobby, and my bull likes tea. It always eats round roti ('Chapati') together with its bull ('tori') friends who all have bristling hair like hedgehogs and succulent plants. My bull keeps different things in the vegetable gardens ('Orti') and in the wineskins ('Otri'). Then there is the tail ('la coda'), and it is always the last thing I see." Personnel: Giancarlo nino Locatelli - Bb clarinet, Alto clarinet on "Otri" and "Itro (Take1) - La Coda"; Andrea Grossi - double bass; Cristiano Calcagnile - drums, percussion.

Andrea Grossi on Four Winds: "Winds (and mythology) have been a pretext for me: characters to take inspiration from, as to define specific musical identities during the composition process. The keystones of this work, which took me almost two years to complete (November 2015-June 2017), are the pieces that bear the names of the four ancient Greek winds: Borea (North), Noto (South), Euro (East), Zephiro (West). This imagery can't obviously ignore the perspective of the 'migrating wind' as an entity in movement, that blends and transforms itself, renovating traditions, identities and cultures, overcoming walls and barriers of all kinds. This music is meant to be a hymn: a eulogy to the differences that nourish and enrich our world. At the same time, with its harshness, it aims to stimulate a reflection about the terrible fate accompanying those who are forced to give up their lives in favor of a greater hope; an aspiration that, very often, remains unfulfilled."

French double bass player, composer and improviser Joëlle Léandre needs no introduction. Her collaborations in the world of contemporary music and improvisation are countless and diverse. The names of Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Giacinto Scelsi, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, and Evan Parker are enough to get an idea of her stature. Here she is in the company of Pascal Contet, accordionist, in a concert recorded live at the Area Sismica in Forlì. The duo already has three albums to their credit and more than twenty years of common experience. Crystal clear recording, direct music, deep understanding.

Trombonist Sebi Tramontana is mostly known as member of the Italian Instabile Orchestra and for his collaboration with European improv luminaries such as Joelle Leandre, Paul Lovens, and Carlos Zingaro. In Down At The Docks, Tramontana is in close company with cello player Luca Tilli. This is a strong free improv album. A genuine and profound dialogue for trombone and cello, full of allusions, rips, bursts of humor, and sudden gusts of poetry.

Andrea Grossi is a young and extremely talented double bass player and Blend 3 is his trio, featuring alto sax player Manuel Calliumi and guitarist Michele Bonifati. The group explores the diverse sound aspects of a trio format that, without a preconceived set, utilizes composition and improvisation as its only resources. This is some sort of chamber jazz where each sound controls its own development to remain suspended and constantly communicative. Nonetheless, sudden nervous and electric transgressions sometimes burst abruptly.

Clarinetist Giancarlo Nino Locatelli can be considered the Italian greatest Steve Lacy expert. Situations is a solo clarinet immersion through the music of the great American soprano sax player. Locatelli catches the essence of Lacy's music through a series of creative renditions of historical compositions such as "Morning Joy", "Blues For Aida", and "Trickles". A very important statement furtherly enhanced by Jason Weiss's liner notes, author of Steve Lacy: Conversations (2006). CD version includes two additional tracks.
