Bristol dubstep mainstay Gemmy, a key figure in pioneering the city's electronic music identity, releases his latest EP Unruly on his World Of Wonders imprint. The new three-track EP shows off Gemmy's keen talent for crafting purple wave influenced dubstep. "Na Tek Bak Chat" is an intensely rhythmic and darkly spacious production, whilst the searing "Sonicboom" bristles with funky, grime-inflected rhythm. The propulsive "Stop Dat!" is a vividly expansive and minimal exploration of bass music.

Gemmy's four track EP for his World Of Wonders imprint brims with energy and innovation. The title track has a chilling vocal sample and a beastly rhythm that lurks somewhere amidst the worlds of grime, dubstep, purple and Timbaland. "Freq Factory"'s stomping, almost 4/4 beat pounds energetically to a squelching, bubbling bassline with glitching sound FX and warm pads. "Dark Dundry" is in a future electro style while "No 1 Stunners" is a crowd favorite.

World Of Wonders is a new label in the Multiverse network of forward-thinking electronic music labels which includes Tectonic, Kapsize, Earwax, Caravan and Build. Around the latter part of 2008 Bristol producer Joker made a relatively innocent comment about his sound being best described -- not as dubstep -- but as "Purple" or "Purple WoW." Along with his production cohorts Gemmy and Guido the trio soon became known as the "Purple Trinity." The three producers injected a lively melodic element to dubstep -- twisting the beats into an aqua crunk framework, blending the best elements of dubstep, bass and dancefloor aesthetics with crunked-out hip hop flavors, '80s synth sounds and -- most importantly -- melodic hooks that get stuck in your head for weeks. This compilation charts the course of the "Purple" sound over the last 5 years highlighting key tracks in its history -- focusing on Joker, Gemmy and Guido's output -- but also featuring the likes of Rustie, Ginz, Mensah, Baobinga and L-Wiz either in collaborative guises or producing solo. This is the essential "Purple WoW" compilation -- anything else out there is a weak imitation.
