Auntie Flo takes you to Brazil. Afonso Marcondes from Sao Paolo: "In a world in which culture policies win nationalist tones, Brazil has lessons to give with the catastrophic failed experience of the last government and the Teletubbies talk on culture from the current one. As one sometimes feels as if one is on a time-warp from time to time, most often taken there by music, songs like 'March of the Berimbau' here, could easy make for the perfect soundtrack for the political history of Brazil, country in which Auntie Flo got his inspiration and recorded this tracks..."

DH 020EP
|
Glas-Goan-Kenyan producer, DJ and global traveller Auntie Flo (Brian d'Souza) regularly releases music inspired by different places around the globe. He's also released remixes from African legends Baaba Maal and Oumou Sangare. Kabsa is a continuation of this trend, this time exploring music from the Levantine coastline. Levantine flavors come together with tracks named loosely after dishes from the region, with other trips to Tel Aviv, Marrakesh and Istanbul also inspiring the production. On Kabsa, all three tracks are 100% analog jams, mostly recorded in one take on an array of hardware.

"Brian d'Souza (aka Auntie Flo) brings together an international group of musicians to explore musical differences and celebrate shared visions across two extended tracks. Produced and arranged over an intense, collaborative two day session at the Santuri studio as part of the Ugandan Bayimba arts festival in Kampala in September 2015, the project draws on Senegalese Sabar drumming, the plaintive notes of the Adungu (a Ugandan 10 string harp) and the vocals of Gio Kiyingi, underpinned by d'Souza's arrangements and drum programming. The title The Soniferous Garden is taken from the writings of Canadian composer and environmentalist R Murray Schafer, a concept he defines as 'a garden or place of acoustic delights' -- an aural space of retreat from the oppressive overabundance of acoustic information that characterizes the modern industrial world. The two compositions are a response to this idea -- drawing the listener into meandering, ever-evolving themes that weave in and out of a rhythmic base that is equal parts traditional percussion and electronic production. The title track showcases the virtuoso Adungu playing of erstwhile Burnt Friedman collaborator Hakim Kiwanuka, and vocals from regular Highlife World Series contributor Giovanni Kremer Kiyingi whilst 'Rainfall On Red Earth' (inspired by the vivid colours of the landscape around the studio) pushes the talking drum of Mama N'Dieck Seck Thiam to the fore."

MUSIQ 204EP
|
The second release of Auntie Flo on Mule Musiq. "Reverence" is African taste, very deep tech house. For fans of Culoe De Song or Mr Raoul K. "Drum Meditation" is more of a DJ tool edit and "Synthapella" is a nice sound effect tool.

HUNTLEYS 025LP
|
Auntie Flo returns with his Theory of Flo masterpiece, his first release on Huntleys + Palmers since 2012. Following his critically acclaimed 2012 Future Rhythm Machine album, Theory of Flo is a bold step ahead, taking the listener on the trip of a lifetime spanning continents, genres, languages, and cultures to create a wholly unique listening experience and one that's only possible in 2015. Auntie Flo created the album with long-term collaborator Esa Williams; Theory of Flo also features collaborations with the incredible Ghanaian singer Anbuley (who appeared on Auntie Flo's 2014 Autonomous Africa hit "Daabi"), Shingai Shoniwa (Noisettes, The Matthew Herbert Big Band, Dennis Ferrer). It was recorded over a lengthy period between Havana, London, and Glasgow, with outstanding results. Scratch the surface and it becomes clear that by interweaving the rhythms and traditions of Africa and Latin America with more familiar western club sounds and four-to-the-floor electronic house music, Auntie Flo's interplanetary projects can break down barriers for fans on both sides of the electronic/world music divide. Fans of Daphni, Débruit, or Spoek Mathambo are all too aware of the tendency for media and critics to sub-categorize and pigeon-hole. Auntie Flo is building his own artistic response, one that re-energizes house music and looks outward but is very much indebted to the vibrancy of the Glasgow club scene. With regular appearances on the foremost underground dance music filter Boiler Room and a monthly show on Rinse FM, Auntie Flo has earned the respect to take the marimbas of West Africa and the palenque of Colombia to the unsuspecting. Two 180-gram LPs in double-gatefold sleeve with download code.
