TRESOR 297EP
|
BNJMN presents Body Reflections Pt.2, the second step in his new, subdued, and intricate sonic direction. The highly textured ambient dance music that characterized the first chapter released earlier in 2017 (TRESOR 290EP), seamlessly continues onto this new reference. Each track on the EP introduces symmetry and rhythm in the form of organic percussion. Whether lethargic and ethereal, blanketed with discordant melodies and arcing synth lines, or more dance-oriented -- with sophisticated interplays of percussive elements looping over soft harmonies. Body Reflections Pt.2 is deeply illustrative of BNJMN's affinity for creating nuanced and delicately balanced layers.

TRCL 002EP

Finishing off 2017 in a flurry, the second release of the newly minted Tiercel label by UK born, Berlin-based BNJMN sees the producer venture into murkier, deeper waters. Black Coast EP is rich in texture, melodically deep, and rhythmically unforgiving. Disorienting the senses, each track is a journey through dark swamps, eerie subterranean realms, and hazy sound spaces. Unrelenting and unforgiving, all three tracks cater to those unafraid to venture into the dark unknown. Artwork by Johannes Arolt. Mastered by Neel at Enisslab.

TRCL 001EP

After kicking off 2017 with Body Reflections Pt.1 on Tresor (TRESOR 290EP), Berlin-based, Bournemouth-born Ben Thomas, aka BNJMN, is back on the new label Tiercel. As an outlet for floor focused tracks, he kicks off the imprint with Paean - two slabs of atmospheric, hypnotic, sci-fi techno, plus an ambient excursion. "Mass Conductor" sees BNJMN create layer upon layer of dense sonics which build to a pulverizing climax. "The Greater Void" is a jarring beatless soundscape and the title track is a song of worship - smooth, yet hard, manic, yet playful; a journey of paradoxes and sonic mysteries.

TRESOR 290EP
|
BNJMN's four-track Body Reflections Pt.1 12" captures a uniquely subdued mood of ambient dance music while integrating seamlessly into Tresor's penchant for restrained and dub-inflected techno. Each track introduces symmetry and rhythm in the form of organic percussion. "Overskies" and "Enceladus" are more lethargic and ethereal, both blanketed with discordant melodies and arcing synth lines. "Hadal Zone" is more dance-oriented, with a sophisticated interplay of percussive elements looping over plaintive vocals and soft harmonies. "Syzygy" brings the EP to a techno-focused close with driving kicks, oscillating synths, and repeating minor chords.

COUNT 008EP

British producer Bnjmn heads even further into harder techno territory with the heavyweight four tracker, MDCCLXXII. Tipping his cap to '90s industrial techno, the A side delivers two uncompromising cuts. "MDCCLXXII" is tough - brash drums merging with metallic, tonal signals and searing hats. "Tor" is similarly up-tempo, however more stripped in comparison, Bnjmn continuing his inventive and challenging sound design in this Beltram-esque bassline killer. "T.E.N.S" is a short collage of buzzing, cerebral electronics, leading into "Where The Wild Berries Grow" - a fuzzy, hypnotic trip of lo-fi ambience and post-club psychedelia, stretching out over eight minutes.

RHM 005EP

BNJMN pops up with another splendid and relevant EP, featuring a remix from Legowelt/Xosar combo, Xamiga. On this 12", BNJMN was inspired by the curious combination of speed and grace that is the humble hummingbird. Propelled forwards by a lone, 140 BPM kick drum, the title-track's waves of crystalline synthesizers and picturesque melodies seem to gracefully hover above the stripped-back rhythm, and Xamiga's remix delivers a deeper, hazier alternative. "Slow Wave" performs the same trick of the ear, while The melancholic "CRVD " is similarly schizophrenic.

Now available on CD with 5 bonus tracks taken from his debut release Plastic World. With Black Square, BNJMN evolves into a more fluid production style, largely by allowing more space into his music. By keeping his drums more sparse and light, his music takes even more of a serene, futuristic quality. A modern electronic classic, we dare to say. Braindance, anybody? Although a quick comparison is made between his music and that of early '90s UK electronica, BNJMN states that he is trying to stay current and not be influenced by the past, rather making music which is all about the moment. He is also not too bothered about being connected to what else is going on in the musical world. Instead, he prefers to let himself be inspired by his surroundings which are those of the sea and nature around Bournemouth, on the south coast of England, which definitely comes out in his music.

After debuting in early 2011 with his Plastic World album, BNJMN returns with his second album, Black Square. All in all, this should remind you of another young lad from the south of England, who had his start some 20 years ago.

Rush Hour is pleased to announce the debut release of a young producer from the UK, BNJMN. His adventurous electronic sound is one not heard in a while. While on one hand his music has a traditional sound (early '90s UK), BNJMN does create a world of his own due to the versatility in his productions. It is this versatility that creates an exciting hybrid sound, therefore pushing the envelope and making it sound very current -- futuristic, even.
