"28 original Bo Diddley Checker recordings from Chicago. One of the most important discs in Bear Family Records Rocks series. Including three Top 5 R&B hits: 'Bo Diddley' from 1955, 'Pretty Thing' from 1956, and 'Say Man' from 1959. Also including highly influential tracks such as 'I'm A Man' and 'Diddley Daddy' from 1955, 'Road Runner' from 1960, and 'You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover' from 1962. Recordings feature several important and original musicians, including: Jerome Green on maracas, Clifton James on drums, Jody Williams on guitar, and Peggy Jones (Lady Bo) on guitar, along with renowned blues players Otis Spann, Lafayette Leake, Frank Kirkland, and Willie Dixon. Formidable and informative biographical notes by Bill Dahl. Full discography information for each track. Incredible photo gallery including previously unseen shots. Reissue coordinated and compiled by Martin Hawkins. You can't judge a book by the cover, according to the song by Bo Diddley -- but you sure can tell a record made by Bo Diddley. For that reason, this is one of the most important discs in our Rocks series. Here is a full CD of truly original, groundbreaking rock and roll, presented as only Bo Diddley could, and as only Bear Family Records can. Bo Diddley's music had a unique beat, an individuality, an 'attitude,' and it formed part of the basic fabric of rock and roll during its heyday in the mid-1950s to the early '60s. There was normally a Bo Diddley disc on the American R&B charts in those years (11 in all) and five of them made the pop charts, too. The immediately recognizable 'Bo Diddley Beat' was copied by some, but never as well, while many others weaved elements of his style into the rock music mainstream. From Buddy Holly's 'Not Fade Away', Dee Clark's 'Hey Little Girl', and Johnny Otis' 'Willie And The Hand Jive' through Freddy Cannon's 'Buzz Buzz A-Diddle-It', Mac 'Dr. John' Rebennack's 'Storm Warning', to 'Magic Bus' by The Who, Diddley's sound has become universal."

R & B Master Works is a fine selection of Bo Diddley's singles recorded for the Chess Records subsidiary label Checker from 1955 to 1962, plus one later track laid down for Pye International. R & B Master Works serves as a vivid reminder of the power and influence of his music had in shaping the then-new sound of rock 'n' roll. Bo Diddley (Ellas Otha Bates McDaniel) had a big influence on guitar heroes like Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and groups like The Clash to name but a few; the latter insisted that Diddley got the attractive support slot for their big US tour way back in 1979. "That guitar sound is mantric, hypnotic, multidimensional, and totally radical" --Page in Mojo. Double LP on 180 gram vinyl, gatefold sleeve, includes liners and all tracks on CD in a cardboard sleeve.

Wax Love present a reissue of Bo Diddley's full-length self-titled debut album, originally released in 1958. The full-length debut by the man known as the originator of rock and roll should need no introduction. Though never a top-seller on par with his Chess Records rival, Chuck Berry, Bo produced a catalog of classics to compete with all but a handful of the best early rockers, pushing rock and roll to its funkiest ever. The Bo Diddley beat -- that "bomp, ba-bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp" to which the pop-garage 1965 hit "I Want Candy" by the Strangeloves owes everything -- is one of rock and roll's bedrock rhythms, showing up in the work of Buddy Holly, the Velvet Underground, and the Rolling Stones, to name but a few. An all-time classic and a milestone in the transition from blues to early rock and roll.

Wax Love present a reissue of Bo Diddley & Company, originally released in 1962. Ellas McDaniel (aka Bo Diddley) was a true American original. He originated a rock beat that has been used by everyone from The Who, to Bruce Springsteen, to The Smiths, had a teenaged Marvin Gaye working as his valet, toured with The Clash, and was in a series of popular Nike commercials. Not to mention the fact that, oh yeah, he wrote and recorded some of the most important rock and roll music of the mid-20th century. And that guitar, that iconic guitar, is prominently featured on the cover of this classic 1962 LP. This is the first LP to feature his popular female rhythm guitarist sidekick, The Duchess, and while not featuring the chart-toppers of other releases, is a stunner of classic R&B influenced rock and roll that's essential for any Diddley fan.

Not to be confused with 1958's collection of singles, also entitled Bo Diddley, this here is one of the three classic studio albums Diddley released in 1962. Part of Diddley's allure and brilliance was the ability to come up with new and classic material, seemingly at will, and that talent is on full display here. Although it doesn't include any of his chart-topping hit singles, 1962's Bo Diddley features 12 tracks that match any of his previous work in wit, groove, and stellar, hypnotic guitar work. Never one to miss a trend, Diddley cashes in on the Twist craze of 1962 with a couple twistin' numbers of his own ("Mama Don't Allow No Twistin'" and "Bo's Twist"). He also amusingly covers politics of the day ("Mr. Khrushchev"), infidelity ("Who May Your Lover Be"), and a whole bunch more. Another Bo Diddley classic on Rumble.

Elias Otha Bates, known to the world as Bo Diddley, was one of the most influential guitarists in the history of American popular music. Without Diddley, it could be argued, you would not have Jimi Hendrix, or The Rolling Stones, or even Buddy Holly -- whose "Not Fade Away" was a clear and obvious nod to the Bo Diddley beat. Originally released on Checker in 1962, Bo Diddley's a Twister, was one of THREE albums released by Diddley in that year alone. Truly one of the hardest working men in show business, his productivity did not do anything to dilute his sound, and the classics here include "Detour," "Road Runner," and "Here 'Tis" which The Yardbirds would cover extensively live, but never match the power of the original. Another Bo Diddley classic on Rumble.

"One of the essential names of the early rock and roll era, inventor of that 'Bo Diddley beat' -- bomp, ba-bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp -- that became one of rock & roll's bedrock rhythms - showing up in the work of Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, and the Who to name but a few - Bo Diddley pushed rock and roll to its funkiest extreme. Mostly known for the hot and raunchy hit 'Road Runner', Bo's fourth album from 1960 hides more than a few suprises: from the Caribbean-sounding 'Limber', to the doo wop-style 'Deed and Deed I Do', or the solid instrumental 'Scuttle Bug', this is an unmissable chapter in Bo's early career."

"Unlike a lot of other rock 'n' roll stars who had gotten their start in the 1950s, Bo Diddley kept going strong into the 1960s and even the early 1970s for that matter. Bo's sixth album from 1961 clearly prefigures most of his '60s output, while still keeping that classic rock 'n' roll feel he had been one of the pioneers of, and probably its most original interpreter. From the flamenco-inspired instrumental 'Aztec', to the two briskly-paced rockers, 'Hong Kong, Mississippi' and 'You're Looking Good', or the goofy spoken word 'Bo's Vacation', Is A Lover demonstrates what a huge influence the man was not only on British rock bands from the mid-1960s but what is commonly described as the 'San Francisco Sound' as well."

"Big Bad Bo sure plays like he is big and bad on this early '70s era classic. He traded in his signature scratchy guitar sound for a funkier, tighter, and crisper sound. While the album rings of experimentation, the results are flawless and the funk is flowing through the legend on songs such as 'Stop The Pusher' and 'Bite You'. Bo keeps it real bluesy on tracks like 'Evelee' and the Native Tongues famously sampled 'Hit or Miss' for the classic De La Soul song 'Buddy'. Available for the first time in generations, this repackaged digpak CD contains digitally enhanced audio, remastered from the original Chess records master tapes and delivered straight to your home hi-fi in stunning high definition sound."

Jerome Records presents this first ever compilation showcasing all of Bo Diddley's pre-debut studio recordings. The riveting recordings he launched in the mid-'50s, with their unmistakably powerful phrasing, mesmerizing riffs and wild beat, changed the course of popular music and gave way to one of the most personal -- and most frequently imitated -- sounds in rock and roll. Deluxe packaging with artist pics, label shots and extensive liner notes by George R. White, author of Living Legend, Bo Diddley's biography. Remastered sound.

"His second 1959 long-play effort only adds a go to his classic debut, refining his trademark square guitar and crazy-distorted amplification to create new sounds (anticipating the innovations of '60s rock icons like Jimi Hendrix) and his rumba-sounding, hambone-styled Bo Diddley beat."
