L/F/D/M squeezes off a volley of misshapen bangers and atonal wormholes in Music Without Discipline, making a mutant follow-up to his M Is a Shape LP (ELP 008LP, 2015) and Crocodiles in the Ceiling EP (ELP 019EP, 2016) for Alessio Natalizia (Not Waving) and Sam Willis's Ecstatic label. For his third solo LP proper as L/F/D/M, the London-based producer/artist/designer Richard Smith jams, layers, and hacks a clutch of new hardware toys, the Akai VX90 and Yamaha TX81Z in particular, into 11 variants of what is essentially a style of no wave or new beta techno. Pursuing his taste for unique, visceral and affective electronic tones into odder integers of the club, L/F/D/M establishes a jagged line that runs from original '80s industrialists thru Larry Heard's legendary Gherkin Jerks and the scenius of Downwards's brummie radge packets to a place right between the eyes of 2017. DJs and dancers will find full fat, wonky weapons ranging from the cranky-assed jacker "Dance, You Awful Cunt", through to a sludgy turn called "Birds", a super-tangy Chicago percolator "Texan Flower Girl", and the throaty acid gargle of "Living Without Gain". But it's the way in which Richard Smith is just as happy to follow his nose into sparkling vignettes such as "After R Version II" and "Ballet", and into the grubby pits of "Pinx" that really gives this record its shape and asserts its messed-up character. Richard Smith aka L/F/D/M reports four barreling hardware shots from London's EBM and techno underworld with the tense, nervous energy of his Crocodiles in the Ceiling EP for Not Waving's Ecstatic label following a slew of 'floor-wreckers with Optimo Trax and Diagonal (as Bronze Teeth and Green Gums with former Factory Floor member Dom Butler). This EP finds him flexing a buzzing set of dancefloor prongs amid the sweat-mist and strobelights. The result is a visceral, animated style, pushing at the most frayed, wild-eyed aspects of post-industrial/acid/techno with inarguably potent impact and effect.

Ecstatic welcomes L/F/D/M to the fold with his debut record M Is a Shape. L/F/D/M is London-based producer Richard Smith. L/F/D/M first emerged in 2013, inaugurating the Optimo Trax series with the Purple Maps EP. In 2014, he teamed up with Factory Floor's Dominic Butler to release two EPs of hardware-driven atonal techno on Powell's Diagonal Records. M Is a Shape bristles with cloudy, industrial, stripped-down acid/techno, landing somewhere between Berghain, the warehouse sound of the late '90s and the caustic spirit of EBM. Richard Smith: "The title comes from a time when I was producing all these collages, abstracting a theme, trying to get it down to the perfect motif, the perfect shape that summed up exactly what I'm trying to get across and then just when I got there, I kinda stepped back and was like; oh it's just a fucking M! The same M that if I had looked at it a month before I would have perhaps only saw the letter and not the shape, that always interested me; the starting point at where you come to an image, one day something can just really catch you off-guard."
