"There is a remarkable elegance to the way Pete, best known as Lawrence, found his space as an artist internationally somewhere between Hamburg and Tokyo. Lawrence produces, DJs, and at rare occasions, plays live. Doing this for over a decade and fluently moving through ambient, experimental and club music, he now completes a trilogy of albums on his Japanese home Mule Musiq, run by Toshiya Kawasaki. Yoyogi Park (2016) is his seventh album overall and after many classic releases -- also appearing on Pampa, Cocoon, Ghostly International or Underground Quality -- he delivers what people grew to love: subtle but playful house and techno music, equally vulnerable and liberating. With Lawrence being a true collaborator, there should be hardly anyone interested in contemporary electronic music who has not been touched by his work in one small way or the other. A fleeting moment on a dancefloor, at home wearing headphones or holding a stunningly designed record sleeve. Together with like-minded artists, Lawrence laid the groundwork for his presence co-founding the free-spirited labels Dial in 2000 and Smallville in 2005, also marking the beginning of his long-standing collaboration with visual artist Stefan Marx. Starting out at the legendary Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg, he now is a regular DJ in the scenes most beloved clubs (Panoramabar, Robert Johnson, Zukunft, Oval, Concrete...) where the Dial all-nighter consistently showcases the labels artistic depth. And it still isn't all he does. One might also catch him playing with his experimental improv-band Sky Walking alongside Christian Naujoks and RVDS. As with his own music he found a striking balance of outlets as an artist, offering fragile concerts, exciting decisions for his labels and intense, emotionally intricate DJ-sets. A worldwide touring schedule with stops at festivals like Mutek, Dimensions or Dekmantel takes Lawrence to where he feels most at home: out there, sharing music." --Jonas Piroth

The highly anticipated album from Lawrence is finally here, and 15 years after the CD release for the first time available on vinyl. Hamburg based Dial and Smallville owner Peter Kersten aka Lawrence is one of the most valued and highly regarded artists in the modern dance music community with a long history of releases on Nova Mute, Kompakt, Ladomat, Spectral, Ghostly, Mule and of course his own imprint Dial. Until Then, Goodbye kicks off with a special "intro" version of a fan favorite "Friday's Child" followed by the introspective ambient piece "Sunrise." "Grey Light" remarks the electronic style of "Drutti Column" while "Jill" is purely sweet slow house music. The album shifts towards more acoustic driven material with songs such as "Father Umbrillo" and "Toderhau-Sen Blues" -- don't fret purists as Lawrence hits back with his classic signature sounds with the likes of "In Your Eyes," "Sleep," and "Suffer." Lawrence leaves listeners with a whisper in the most beautiful of ways. The atmospheric ambient tune "Don't Follow Me," the ebb and flow of the piano driven "A New Day" and the title track leave the listener in a state of bliss.

Dial Records boss makes a welcome return to Smallville in March of 2024 with a fresh four-tracker EP Gravity Hill. Peter Kersten, better known to most as Lawrence, has been at the forefront of underground house and techno for decades now. His Dial imprint, co-founded alongside Carsten Jost, has grown to become a north star for many seeking out raw, emotive and understated electronic music and Lawrence's own productions follow a similar path, finding a home on many beloved labels beyond Dial such as Mule Musiq, Ghostly International, Giegling, Pampa and of course Smallville, that he co-founded together with Stella Plazonja and Julius Steinhoff in 2005. Title-track "Gravity Hill" opens the project and perfectly sets the tone with Lawrence's distinct atmospheric haze of keys, chords and pads billowing atop swaying bass tones and crisp drums. "Beaver" follows next and edges into dubbed out realms with expansive stab delays, rounded subs, modulating percussive flutters and a robust rhythmic drive. "The Swamp" then leads the B-side, diving into a deeper territory via airy Rhodes melodies and subtly unfurling pads, intertwined with organic percussion and a jazz-tinged bass line. "Stargazer" then concludes the package and shifts back to a more straight, dance floor- oriented feel via a twitchy acid bass, circling resonant synth licks, hypnotic textures and a swinging drum groove. Smallville 62 artwork by Stefan Marx as always, and this is the first 12" Smallville cover in full color, after 61 black/white releases.

2024 repress. DJ, producer, and Dial Records co-owner Lawrence produced his fourth album for Mule Musiq. The Berlin-based artist wrote nine new arrangements specifically for Studio Mule, the new audiophile listening bar that Mule Musiq's head-honcho Toshiya Kawasaki recently opened in Shibuya, Tokyo. "Toshiya's wine and listening bar was the inspiration for the project. I followed the idea of listening to music in this (for me imaginary) place on a magic vintage sound system, slightly drunk with an always special drink in my hand! The music is therefore also very eccentric and 'tipsy', improvised on acoustic instruments, synthesizers and computer, combined with recordings I did in Berlin's Central Tiergarten Park." Lawrence acknowledges the imaginative superstructure above his new album and his mode of operating during the recordings. Birds On The Playground features deep pulsating music that unfolds its true absorbing character when the auditor listens carefully to the detailed storytelling of Lawrence. Like always, his tunes have a special, radiant pulse, that somehow is a signature sign of most of his productions. Playful cosmic grooves, light-hearted, crafted with love and yet freshly unsettling in some moments. His arpeggiated melodies remind partly on the music of Hans-Joachim Roedelius. In other seconds, they display a jazzy spiritual character and drift into meditative areas, that sound to a degree like long forgotten Japanese folk music spheres. As Birds On The Playground isn't aimed straight for the dancefloor, the overall coating of the music is a relaxed, cautious one, that goes beyond the average definition of ambient music. Each track builds up gracefully, in order to present a mesmerizing musical architecture, that offers new sound dimensions with any fresh listening turn. As the record is made for Mule Musiq's latest public space enterprise, everyone who is closely connected to the label was involved. Mule Musiq's core artist Kuniyuki was in charge for the mastering. And the labels visual artist Stefan Marx painted the cover artwork.

Double LP version. John Thorp on Lawrence's Illusion: "Lawrence makes a full-length return to his own Dial label with Illusion. Following two critically-acclaimed albums for Mule Musiq, the follow-up to 2016's Yoyogi Park (MUSIQ 054CD/196LP) captures the Berlin-based artist, DJ, and label-owner at home in a suitably deep landscape of sound. Throughout, his involving and human approach to electronic music feels more inviting and more necessary than ever. Rather than the dancefloors across Europe that Lawrence has so fruitfully soundtracked over the past few decades, the sound of Illusion is inspired not only by his endless, constantly unfolding creative process, but a flurry of underground club gigs overseas including Japan and Mexico. In these close spaces, warmth and intimacy generate the atmosphere, and Illusion is naturally blessed with a typically delicate touch that might surprise even long-time devotees of the artist. On close listen, acoustic instruments and subtle field recordings provide a natural bedfellow to Lawrence's typically warm, earthy machine sound. Another influence is the artist's real-time live project, Sky Walking, and their shows in intimate venues such as Berlin's Acud and the legendary Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg. After pulling back the stage curtain with the mellow and inviting 'Crystal', the bubbling Lawrence grooves are quickly established on 'Treasure Box', alongside a complex but seductive tapestry of both electronic and acoustic sound. Before long the buoyant synths that drive 'Yu Yu' melt sensitively into a rich wash of strings. The second half of Illusion conjures somewhat darker magic, tunneling more so into the darker, psychedelic impulse within Lawrence's synthesis. 'Transitions' establishes an eerie atmosphere that's complemented by 'Dark Swirl', in which a deep, bottom-heavy bass line dances around a dense, atmospheric forest of effects. The record concludes with perhaps it's greatest moments of potential physical delight. Montreux divulges it's details gradually yet beautifully, anchored by a powerful kick, while 'Creepers' finishes the show with a deeply resonant, melodic and altogether transcendent trip, a full-scale but understated soothing of the body and mind. Continuing his story as one of the most accomplished producers in electronic music, Illusion finds Lawrence reflecting inward, back where he began. Able to conjure quietly breathtaking moments out of thin air, the intriguing effect of Lawrence's music continues to resonate."

After Lawrence's excellent new album Yoyogi Park (MUSIQ 054CD/196LP, 201), Mule Musiq's favorite German producers provide this great remix package. One of the most respectable Giegling artists, Kettenkraussell, delivers two versions. One is dark deep house and one is more electronica, reminiscent of Jan Jelinek. Roman Flügel's remix is more uplifting and trippy - simply nice for the club. Lake People's remix is old school electro style but sounds very modern and playful.

Magical, mystical, and straight from the heart; following Until Then, Goodbye (2009) and A Day in the Life (MUSIQ 046CD/180LP, 2014), the Hamburg-based art curator, DJ, and producer Lawrence presents Yoyogi Park, the third part of an album trilogy for Mule Musiq in collaboration with artist Stefan Marx. The album explores the intersection of Lawrence's own ambient productions, acoustic sound experiments, and the driving force of the dancefloor. The artwork shows a 360-degree view of Yoyogi Park in the heart of Tokyo, which Stefan Marx created for a fanzine for Printed Matter's NY Art Book Fair in 2015. Beyond the gorgeous greenery of Yoyogi Park lies craziness and mystery, and behind Lawrence's abstract beats and compelling functionality lies a magical full-color palette of mind-expanding sounds. Some of the tracks on Yoyogi Park contain live samples of Sky Walking (Lawrence's band with Christian Naujoks and RVDS) and some incorporate field recordings of streets and parks, while other tracks are versions of previously released, dreamily sublime ambient tracks. A one-of-a-kind blend of varied, deep, widescreen, and star-crossed electronica, romantic and enchanting. Lawrence's excellent recordings seduce with in-depth house rhythm sensibilities while spreading otherworldly melodies. Once again, he produced these vividly immersive tracks on the road. Some he started in his cozy backyard studio in Hamburg; he crafted others between cities like Berlin, Buenos Aires, New York City, and Tokyo. They all share some analog warmth while spreading mystery and allure, coming together to form a compelling whole. And although the album is made for the dancefloor, its shimmering brilliance goes far beyond usual club music euphoria. Wonderful, compelling stuff that could be the perfect starting point for anyone interested in delving into Lawrence's unique world of intimate, subtly shifting grooves and tones -- an enchanting world where feelings unfold in rhythms and melodies.

This is the brand-new ambient and beyond album by Hamburg DJ/producer Lawrence, dedicated to his long-lasting relation with Toshiya Kawasaki, man of action behind labels like Mule Musiq, Endless Flight and Mule Electronic, and the artist Stefan Marx. Besides co-running the label Dial and the Mathew Gallery in Berlin, Lawrence is constantly releasing music on his own labels and befriended platforms like Smallville Records. Furthermore, he regularly contributes to Kawasaki's imprints Mule Musiq and Electronic. The music he shares on his latest album isn't linked to a special place or event. He mostly produced it on his DJ trips around the globe, including Toshiya's homeland, Japan. Back in his cozy backyard studio in Hamburg, he finished all the pieces and mixed them down with a lot of joy. In terms of style, this album is ambient and opens the genre wide open with its very own musical and emotive language. A track like "Nowhere Is a Place" spreads smoothly-twisted spectral vibes with blurring sounds that could easily originate from alienated instruments like a damaru or a conch horn. Sometimes soft, sizzling noise slides under gentle, balanced ambient air, as in the track "The Visit." In other arrangements, he lets the chords dance with cute, smacking electronic glimpses or odd, slow-motion melodies, reminiscent of the work of Hans-Joachim Roedelius and his love for the gentle swing. For Lawrence, this album is "a triple buddy record," as not only is his emotional content included in the finished product, but also his friends, Stefan Marx -- who is in charge of the artwork -- and Mule Musiq-head Toshiya Kawasaki, who was also profoundly involved in the outcome. The genesis of A Day in the Life resides in its emotional content -- it is a weightless one where all feelings are stored supremely in what you can hear, see, and hold in your hand.

Gatefold double LP version. Almost a decade after his last Dial Records album, after an enormous amount of releases on labels like Pampa, Mule Musiq, Ghostly International, Kompakt, Styrax, and many more, Lawrence continues with a wonderful selection of extraterrestrial dance music: Films & Windows. From the first sparkle to the last whisper, this album is dedicated to "Angels at Night." As the album title suggests, Lawrence as a cineaste and voyeur is inspired by an endless number of screened movies and real-life films -- some only appearing while watching landscapes, stars and people passing by in front of a train window. While wondering at moments like this, strange ideas and colorful sounds occur inside the mind of the musician. The ideal approach would be to transfer these ideas into music without any norms or rules -- but there is the club and it was always there. So no matter where Films & Windows started, it should always arrive at the dancefloor with frenzied people and other addicts of the outer-world's soul. For over 20 years, clubs and nights out at places such as the Front, the '90s WMF, Golden Pudel Club, Click, Sud Electronic, Panorama Bar, Robert Johnson, Smallville, Yellow, Precious Hall, etc., have been at the center of Lawrence's universe. House music, techno, alien-funk, the unheard, the unseen -- it is all magic everywhere.

Being Germany's Gateway to the World, the port city of Hamburg always had a special affinity for America. So, it's not surprising that Peter M. Kersten aka Lawrence has had a deep musical and spiritual relationship with the Detroit techno aesthetics for more than ten years now. His label Dial Rec, which he runs together with Carsten Jost, stands more than almost any other European address for the value-conscious cultivation of high-quality, melancholy techno. After seven albums under his producer aliases Lawrence and Sten, Kersten now continues the perfection of his sound vision also as a DJ in a congenial way. Timeless is far away from the dictate of the dogmatic obligation to the currentness that DJs have to face nowadays, but celebrates electronic dance music as a timeless sensual component. With instinctive certainty, Kersten covers 16 years of living club history without ever losing sight of the acoustic "here and now," or even becoming the slightest bit anachronistically nostalgic. Instead, under his sensitive hands, milestones of minimalized deep house like "Forever Monna" by Chez Damier, Ron Trent and Stacey Pullen (1995) or the 1999 club hit "Overcome" by Thomas Melchior/Baby Ford come together with contemporary and intensive homages to Detroit techno like Smallpeople & Rau's "Life Aquatic," Delano Smith's "My Life" or Pigon's fantastic dub tech romance "Beatmatching" in a wonderful way. Besides that, the mix features such well-known names such as Aril Brikha, Isolée, The Ifach Collective and Robert Hood, before Roman Flügel sets a wistful final chord with "Brian Le Bon," a track based on Duran Duran's masterpiece "Save A Prayer," and Plaid finishes the mix with the crystalline "OI." Lawrence's mix literally breathes the serenity of a light-flooded Sunday morning somewhere between a modernist city and a forest glade, and thus gives his global artistic approach a suitable dimension. Other artists include: Soul Capsule, Schatrax, RVDS, Morphosis, Mike Dehnert and Plaid.

Lawrence is back on Mule Electronic with four brand new songs. "Teenage Barb" is a hypnotic deep house tune with melancholic piano chords and monotone synth sounds. "Organ Track" is a percussive deep house tune with a modern approach for all deep house lovers. "Above The Sky" is a dance version of "Enjoy The Silence," included on Mule's ambient compilation. This is a very nice ambient house sound with an illusory melody à la Steve Reich.
