BARN 072EP

Lo and behold -- it's Mark E on Studio Barnhus! Since 2005, the Birmingham-based maestro has continuously blessed the international discotheque community with a non-stop stream of carefully constructed dance trax -- amounting to two albums and dozens of singles until his SB debut in February 2020. The Outdoor Pursuits EP contains four perfect exemplars of the Brummie genius's warm, reduced signature sound -- cherry-picked from a fresh batch of produce by an awestruck Studio Barnhus A&R team. Enjoy forever!

Birmingham-based DJ and producer Mark E, an ever-dependable exponent of the real and raw house music vibe, returns to Futureboogie for the first time since 2014, following releases on his own Merc imprint and revered labels like Spectral Sound and Running Back. On "Basement Trax 1," distorted synths wander over a low-slung beat alongside marching hi-hats and filter work tweaked to perfection. The gnarly bass and classic string sounds of "Basement Trax 2" are delivered in the finest wild-pitch tradition; the raw production packs a punch as the stomping drums and repetitive keys ramp up the heat for a real blazer of an underground club cut.

Running Back veteran Mark E returns with a tribute to the UK's Black Country and an ode to the Industrial Revolution. The images and histories of coal mines, steel mills and iron foundries north and west of Birmingham and south and east of Wolverhampton lay the foundation of this three-track EP (including a work-break siren). Being a product of his environment, Mark E delivers lots of sooty particle house music with a glimpse of sunshine.

Mark E complements the Running Back label again with some original productions. Starting out with "Nobody Else," Mark puts love on top of love. Unfortunately for you -- and good for us -- you have to fetch a second copy to go back and forth with the weighty bonus beats. Flip side: "The Wolf" is a murky trip into classic cavernous house music with a bottom-heavy ruffneck sound and an attention-drawing siren.

After his gorgeous releases for Running Back and Internasjonal, Birmingham-based Mark E is the hottest nu-disco artist at the moment, and here he delivers two razor-sharp tracks cut just for the floor. You might recognize the A-side's "Codsall Juniors" from KZA and Toshiya Kawasaki's solid mix for Endless Flight's I'm Starting To Feel Okay Vol. 3 CD. What does the E in his name stand for? If this 12" is any indication, the word is "ecstasy."
