ECHO 092EP
|
Echocord welcomes the return of Mathimidori to the imprint with his Anata EP, accompanied by a remix from New Yorker and Novel Sound boss Levon Vincent. Mathimidori is the dub techno leaning guise of Germany's Mathias Kaden, known for his works under his own name on imprints such as REKIDS, Ovum, and Freude Am Tanzen, while Mathimidori material has found a home on the likes of Mule Musiq, Raum, Ornaments, and of course, Echocord where he returns here following 2020's Akebono LP (ECHO 086LP). Opening the release is "Anata", a texturally dense six-and-a-half-minute composition fusing pulsating subs, billowing synth atmospherics, spiraling dub echoes and sporadic dubbed out spoken word running atop a crisp 4/4 rhythm. "Zanziba" follows and dives deeper via ethereal pads, snaking low-end pulsations, choppy stab sequences and heavily echoing reggae chants. Levon Vincent steps up to remix "Zanziba" next, delivering a typically raw and dynamic rework, upping the energy levels as dub stabs dynamically unfold and retract amongst a thunderous low-end drive, intricate synth flutters and low-slung drums across its ten-minute duration.

Echocord revisits Mathimidori's Akebono LP (ECHO 086LP, 2020) with remixes from Deadbeat, FDF, Rod Modell, and Quantec. Late 2020 saw the release of Mathimidori's Akebono on the Echocord imprint, the ten-track collection saw the Mathias Kaden alias deliver a number of collaboration and original productions exploring the realms of dub and the guise's underlying Japanese influences. Here the label revisits the project with an all-star cast of remixes in the dub techno world. Stepping up to the plate first is Deadbeat with his "Dub" take on Maiia', the Montreal based artist shifts focus to tumbling dub echoes, hazy noise sweeps and jittery hi-hats throughout before the "FDF Reshape" of "Soso" lays down a gyrating drum groove atop expansive reggae vocal shots and an ethereal, billowing atmosphere. Deepchord's Rod Modell deliver his first "Version" of "Ork" next, as expected the pioneering dub techno artist offers up a typically classy interpretation fueled by hypnotic, chanting voices, the originals fluttering chords and a pulsating low-end drive. Quantec takes on "Akari" next for a refined and reduced offering, laying down minimalistic percussion and subtly nuanced chords before Modell's "Dub" take on "Ork" completes the release, as the name would suggest adding a more hypnotic and dubbed out aesthetic to things to contrasting his former remix.

Copenhagen's Echocord returns with a long player from Mathimidori, titled Akebono and comprised of ten original compositions. Mathimidori, better known by most as Mathias Kaden, has been using this alias as a way to showcase his take on dub-leaning, minimalistic, and refined techno via labels such as Dorian Paic's Raum Musik, Tokyo's Mule Musiq, and Berlin's Ornaments. Here though he delivers his debut long player under the guise and fittingly the LP will be released via esteemed dub techno imprint Echocord, home to releases from the likes of STL, Deepchord, Fluxion, XDB, and Forest Drive West. Across Akebono, Mathimidori delivers hazy, spaced-out instrumentals like "Maiia", "Ork", and "Soso" while tracks like "Asaka" and "Shao" offer a darker approach. The project also welcomes an assortment of collaborations such as opening track "Java" alongside Spain's Pulshar, "Kiok" featuring Japanese artist Tomomi Ukumori and "Kobe" with Germany's Rhauder which all lean towards downtempo dub territories. Also featured are Sakura who provides spoken word vocals for "Akebono" and Shoco who joins Mathimidori for the ambient leaning album conclusion "Akari". Transparent red vinyl.

MUSIQ 205EP

Mathias Kaden's project Mathimidori is back to Mule Musiq since the release of Ame Ga Furu EP in 2013. This time he teams up with Japanese female singer Shoco. It's a great mixture of atmospheric tech-house and cool Japanese poetry reading.

Mathias Kaden's project with Japanese vocalist Tomomi's debut release as Mathmidori on Mule Musiq. Mathias and Tomomi have already collaborated, and maybe you remember DJ Koze's excellent remix of the song. The main version on the A-side is an atmospheric dub techno tune with a mysterious Japanese voice. On the B-side, Lawrence made a deeper and more club-friendly remix and the beats version is a simple DJ tool.
