LIFE 045LP
|
This somehow mythological album from one of Iran's top sitarist lurches between traditional Eastern forms and more modern Western styles, blending the two into a fascinating fusion of cultures and flavors. Similar to the work of Indian rare groove master Ananda Shankar, the record brings to life the ultimate marriage of funky drums, lush horns, wah-wah guitars and Eastern harmonies. A necessary re-discovery!

Collected from several 45s and his one LP issued between 1968 and 1976, please enjoy Pharaway Sounds' introduction to Iranian sitarist, the debonair Abbas Mehrpouya (1927-1993). Tehran's most exotic musician led a swank and cosmopolitan life, and his deep, low voice lends itself easily to bursting arrangements of snazzy lounge funk. Get your ears on the cuts that have been making DJs drool across Europe and the States. And while you're at it, introduce yourself to the aching, tear-filled flute and organ dirges of Mehrpouya's earlier years. The most complete overview of his career ever released, so don't miss one sumptuous instant. Includes liner notes.

Featuring "African Jumbo." "Abbass Mehrpouya was one of Iran's top sitarists before passing in 1993. Having released a series of 7" singles that range from psychedelic, pop and even heavy funk, collectors are pushing one another aside in an attempt to obtain his legendary work. While his psychedelic guitars and flutes have collectors drooling at the mouth, his heavy funk moments can be heard rocking dance floors in clubs across the world. This album, his sole LP release African Jumbo, is both the rarest, and most in demand album from Iran, dated sometime in the mid '70s. The 11+ minute track 'African Jumbo' is not only a masterpiece of psychedelic funk, but is also only available on this sole and impossibly hard to find album. A simply wonderful experience full of beautiful sitars and flutes, while heavy drums, horns and percussion help fill out the wonderful melodies. Mehrpouya's talents weren't limited to traditional instruments either. He was known to have invented original instruments from bones and other natural materials, while using pots as a replacement for drums. Truly a magical album from a legendary artist within Iran's musical history, and one that is near impossible to source as an original. A true holy grail of Iranian music for both its rarity and content, this release is enriched with a bonus track, taken from a rare cassette."
