One of the most celebrated vocalists of the 20th Century and the best-known French singer of all time, the iconic cabaret and chanson performer Edith Piaf had an incredible life and an equally amazing career. Abandoned by her mother at birth and raised partly in a brothel by her granny, Piaf began performing in her father's acrobatic street troupe as a teen and made her name in occupied Paris. For 1958's Piaf! her torch-song deliveries are aided by the subtle strings of the Orchestra of Robert Chauvigny; if you're an Edith Piaf fan there is plenty to savor here, especially "En Pourtant," "Les Orgues De Barbarie," and "Le Gitan Et La Fille."

The music of Edith Piaf was often autobiographical and she is specialized in chanson and torch ballads about love, loss, and sorrow. Her most widely known songs include "La Vie en rose" (1946), "Non, je ne regrette rien" (1960), "Hymne à l'amour" (1949), "Milord" (1959), "La Foule" (1957), "L'Accordéoniste" (1940), and "Padam, padam..." Edith Piaf lived a tortured life. She died at 47 of liver cancer after years of alcohol abuse and pill addiction, and it's reported that her last words were "Every damn thing you do in this life, you have to pay for". While that's a hard way to live, her pain and emotion rang true in song, and there's not a better or more gut-wrenching torch singer in history than Ms. Piaf. Collecting some of her most famous recordings, including the immortal "La Vie En Rose", "Tout Fout Le Camp", and "Le Vagabond", this is a brilliant retrospective of her career and a perfect entry point into the world of one of the greatest vocalists of the 20th century.

"Finally available again on vinyl after decades, La Vie en Rose: Edith Piaf Sings in English (featuring Piaf singing English versions of ten of her most classic tunes) was originally released in 1956, when La Môme Piaf was at the apex of her career, and a huge star among English-speaking audiences as well. Beginning with the classic and iconic 'La Vie en Rose,' written in 1945 (and all the more delightful for fans to hear Piaf sing it with her endearing French accent), and ending with the classic 'The Three Bells' ('Les trois cloches'), sung with the nine-piece all-male a cappella group known as Les Compagnons de la Chanson. A classic release by one of France's national treasures." Comes on 180 gram vinyl.
