DRONE 019EP
|
The ridiculously talented Christopher Rau goes a little harder than his normal sonic spectrum for his debut release on Drone, delivering two fantastic techno excursions with this strong double hitter. The tile track is "Beasts": harsh, dripping, and cold. Fans of Pan Sonic won't be disappointed. "Riggleysz" exposes Rau's deep house sensibilities with a percussive, DJ tool that breaks out into an infectious techno work out.

Double LP version. Christopher Rau is on a big mission against club depression. He knows how to turn a simple beat, a reduced bass line and only a few sound elements into pure heaven. His choice of labels are those who want to keep the world of house music a special place: Pampa, Giegling/Staub, Laid, Mule Musiq, Aim, Ethereal Sounds and Hamburg's Smallville who now present Rau's second album, Two. The cover by Stefan Marx is even more colorful than on the debut, and so is the music ? well-known for his minimalistic choice of ingredients, Rau somehow frees himself of any straight format. These are songs full of sweetness: a glimpse of soul here, a Detroit electro influence there, broken beats, breaks that are no breaks, sexiness and funk and fun. The city of Christopher Rau's music turns into a universe, a world that believes in that particular moment when a minute turns into life. Where you will dive through the surface of beat, bass and sample to find something barely reachable underneath. Even though the essentials of house music were invented some 25 years ago, Christopher Rau proves again how far we can still go. Two is the soundtrack to the sweetest war, a lovely, silent strike against convention, boredom and emptiness.

MUSIQ 149EP
|
This is the debut release by Christopher Rau on Mule Musiq. Christopher Rau is one of the best artists in the modern deep house scene. The title track sounds like a collaboration from Larry Heard and DJ Koze. On the B-side, "That Dam Love" has already been picked up for Mule label compilation I'm Starting To Feel Okay Vol. 5 (EF 007CD). This track is his trademark melancholic house tune. "Balance Live" is more minimal and alternative.

PAMPA 007EP
|
Christopher Rau has built a reputation as the finest ear canal masseuse in the contemporary house music scene, catching the attention of DJ Koze who has recruited him for this EP. Rau's debut full-length Asper Clouds (SMALL 003CD/LP), was noted for straddling the line between "club" and "headphone" music, earning 4 out of 5 stars from Resident Advisor, and now, with the How Are You EP, he follows up to further explore his sonic approach: an assault of subtlety.

Christopher Rau succeeds in what rarely happens in the universe of house music: he creates a dream around that one magic loop which seems to last forever on the dancefloor. Now, after releases on Staub, Laid and Smallville, the dream develops, the magic expands: Christopher Rau's debut album Asper Clouds builds up one hour of pure beauty. No trend to be followed, no invention to be intended, it is the reduced gorgeousness that lets us float on sweet Asper Clouds. Nick Holder, Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Pete Rock, J Dilla -- they all simply cached the right sense for magic samples, heavenly loops, and warm bass lines -- Christopher Rau might not connect to these heroes personally, but he belongs to that group of magicians who forms happiness out of a small amount of ingredients. His music has the sweetness and warmth of the city of Hamburg at delightful venues such as the Golden Pudel Club and Smallville Parties at Ego. After "Ne Travaillez Jamais" became the favorite track on Smallville, the idea of an album was born. Asper Clouds is simple and lovely.
