BPX 006EP
|
Exactly one year after his debut The Eyes for BPitch Berlin (BPC 342EP, 2019), Ego Wars is the follow-up EP of the exceptional Spanish artist Regal. With the three tracks (as well as a remix by the Frenchman Hadone) Gabriel Cassina shows again why he is one of the most prominent techno acts of our time. After releasing acid-infused rave tracks like "Overground", which last year became an outstanding signature track not only in Ellen Allien's DJ sets, he now combines radically fast beats with trance-influenced melodies on the Ego Wars EP. The tracks convey the same passion that you could hear on his former releases on his own label Involve, but they are also partially entering new stylistic territory.

Regal debuts on BPitch Control with one of his rare releases outside his own Involve imprint. Eschewing the mighty four-to-flour thump that dominates most of his work, "The Eyes" sticks out from Regal's vast discography. "Overground" immediately launches into outer space and towards rave ecstasy on a 140+ bpm backbeat. "I Need You" opens the flip in typical hard-hitting Regal style but throws two elements in the ring that give this track an unusual spin. "Stimulus" brings about a welcome change in mood after this overwhelming experience: this is five-and-a-half cathartic minutes of acid techno at its purest.

Regal, one of Madrid's hottest techno-exports, presents an EP comprising both new works and a re-interpretation by Radio Slave. The original and remix rub shoulders on the A-side, both revolving around its enticing vocal hook. While Regal employs a skipping beat and skittish percussion to conjure up an air of mystery, Radio Slave uncovers the track's slumbering lunatic qualities. On the B side, Regal operates in a framework that is a tad more housey than usual: snappy snares slice up the bubbling acid-line. "Slab" barges right in, wielding hefty drums and a bassline that oozes groove out of every loop.
