"Renaldo and the Loaf is an English musical duo active since the late 1970s, consisting of a pathologist (David Janssen or Ted the Loaf) and an architect (Brian Poole or Renaldo Malpractice). By their own assertion, they achieved their unique sound in part by striving to get unnatural synthesizer-like sounds using only what instruments they had available (acoustic ones). To that end they routinely used muffled and de-tuned instruments, and, often to striking effect, tape loops and manipulation. In 2018, they played their first ever live show at Klang 25 in Vienna, documented on the album Long Time Coming. In 2016 the group recorded a brand-new album entitled Gurdy Hurding. When it was released on vinyl in 2019, it came with a fourth side of a new piece, Hardly Gurning While The World Is Turning. This has never been available on CD -- until now. Here's what the band says: 'Hardly Gurning itself is part remix, part new recording, part re-imagining... to complement this we decided to ask some of our friends if they might create a remix/re-imagination of the Gurdy Hurding tracks. In a strange way, the lockdowns of 2020 have benefitted this project as, in most cases, it afforded our contributors some time to work on it, which otherwise they may not have able to. We've certainly been excited by what has emerged -- almost the whole of Gurdy Hurding has been revisited.'"

The Elbow Is Taboo was Renaldo & The Loaf's fourth and last album of their initial phase prior to their return in 2010. Released by Ralph Records in America and Some Bizzare in the UK in 1987, this work represents a development in the overall sound as they utilize an 8-track recorder along with early digital effects. A large arsenal of acoustic instrumentation gives the record an additional unsettling atmosphere. Recorded over a three-year period this remains the definitive statement by the group in this early period. As clarified by Brian from the band, the themes remain as obtuse and alluring as ever with each song containing its own story: "be it a child's desire to control ('A Street Called Straight'), the ridiculous purdah of an innocent part of the body ('The Elbow Is Taboo'), a call for help in times of angst ('Here's To the Oblong Boys'), the rigours of a bread fetish ('The Bread Song'), the anger of a dance teacher to the terminally inept ('Critical/Dance') or a ritual call to prayer, somewhere ('Extracting The Re-Re')". Disorientating and delightful, this is a must for all fans of the Loaf and for those tickled by the more deranged spectrum of song. Remastered for vinyl and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, Nov 2018. Original album recorded Chez Struvé 1984 to 1986. Cover design & layout by Nik Void. Original cover concept by Renaldo & The Loaf.

"Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of their D.I.Y. cassette debut, Renaldo & The Loaf revisit Play Struvé & Sneff with a very special deluxe run of only 200 copies! For the first time since 1979 this very rare release is faithfully recreated, right down to the photocopied images and typewritten cassette labels! In addition, the cassette is included within a beautiful custom retail box alongside a signed/numbered 'RATL & A Stranger' promo card and a 36 page booklet telling the complete story of how Struvé & Sneff came about way back when! So just who are Renaldo & The Loaf? Two British guys, Brian Poole and David Janssen, who met in 1970 and self-taught themselves to play their instruments in their own very individual way. Always recording their own material in a bedroom studio, over time they developed an increasingly strange yet very British repertoire of oddly accessible songs. Spurred on by the D.I.Y. ethic of the late 70s, in 1979, they compiled their first album as Renaldo & The Loaf, a hand-made cassette that was sold locally and thru mail order. Only about 250 copies were ever made. In late 1979 that cassette was brought to the attention of The Residents and it directly lead to the band signing to Ralph Records in San Francisco. They went on to release five albums on the label including a unique collaboration project with The Residents themselves. Original copies of the cassette album are now a prized collector's item and with its 40th anniversary in September 2019, a special re-issue will be an exciting prospect for their loyal fanbase."

A biomedical scientist and an architect form a band in the early '70s with nothing by the way of traditional musical talent or skill but with endless enthusiasm and their own unique musical sensibility. The ensuing career and creative output of this ongoing home studio/bedroom band remains one of the most significant song based 'outre' catalogs ever produced in the United Kingdom. This comprehensive two LP set contains their first official LP (originally released on The Residents' legendary Ralph Records label) along with an extra album of different versions and extra tracks which reside here for the first time on vinyl. The duo Renaldo & The Loaf, originally Portsmouth-based, and now in Portsmouth and Mid-Wales, remain an enigma whilst amassing an enormous cult following worldwide. Their singular take on music encompasses wit, strange melodic construction and an off-kilter sensibility which successfully rendered them engaging for each emerging generation. The ability of Renaldo & The Loaf to unnerve and entertain in equal measure is what binds these songs to a musical universe outside of all other forms that existed around the time of release -- The Residents are obvious spiritual heirs. Songs For Swinging Larvae is a classic collection of confounding songs which lead the listener into a surreal world of twisted tunes and perverted pop. Songs From The Surgery is made up of improvisations, early/alternative versions of various Larvae tracks and unreleased pieces from the same period. The results leave one laughing through a thick veil of unease. As the original Ralph Records press release said of Songs For Swinging Larvae: "This is an album of primitive modernism, energetic obnoxious noises, manic high pitched vocals and sweet brilliance." All tracks written and produced By Renaldo And The Loaf, originally mixed at Elephant Studios, London, November 1980. Cover and layout by Nik Void, original album artwork by Gary Panter. Re-mastered for vinyl and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates and Mastering, Berlin, November 2018.

"People traveled from all over the world to see them. It was the first time RATL played a proper set and let me tell you, they were beyond amazing. The set consisted of songs old and new, and even a so-far unreleased track was presented for the first time ever. Of course, this unique event was recorded and here is Renaldo & The Loaf live at Klang25 in Vienna in 2018!"

"Possibly the thing in the world that you never expected to happen, but luckily you were wrong: Klanggalerie are proud to present you the brand new album by Renaldo & The Loaf. 30 years after The Elbow is Taboo, Renaldo & Ted The Loaf have created another fabulous record. 13 songs in classic RATL style with an incredible cover by the wonderful Poxodd. All the RATL trademark sounds are there, but of course technology has not passed unnoticed, so there is a 2016 approach to the music, too."

"The final chapter in our Renaldo & The Loaf re-issue series! Breadcrumbs collects all pieces that somehow didn't fit onto the other deluxe CDs. The first section, tracks 1 to 5, gathers up the extra songs from Struve & Sneff and gives them their own space. After an interlude (a new instrumental), the second section is mainly unreleased music. Only 'Gone To Gondwana' has been released before as this version on 'Olleh Olleh Rotcod'. The track 'Is This Tradition?' is a song Renaldo recorded with a visitor in 1984. After a second interlude (another new instrumental) the third section is the 1984 mixes of Struve & Sneff reconstructed in the original track order. The music has been carefully remastered by the band in 2016. New artwork was provided by Renaldo M."

"The Elbow is Taboo was Renaldo & The Loaf's fourth album and was released by Ralph in America, Torso in The Netherlands and Some Bizzare in the UK in 1987. You can hear a great technological step forward immediately. Also, the list of analogue instruments played on this album seems endless. Included is one of their most popular songs, 'Hambu Hodo' which was also released as a 12" single, and a cover version of the song 'Boule!' by French band Ptose. Sadly, it turned out to be their last album, the split followed soon afterwards. As with the other re-issues of this great band's recordings, we offer this new and remastered edition as a double CD. 'Elbonus' features not only the legendary 12" of Hambu Hodo, but also the unreleased 7" mix. There's also the the material that was issued on the scarce Hambu Hodo Tak Awa CD-R given away to 5 personal friends and some further unreleased stuff. A must-have."
