BPitch Control presents the third album from mysterious German collective Snuff Crew. For this album they chose to work more conceptually than they had on their previous releases (their eponymous first album Snuff Crew in 2009, and Jack 2 in 2010) on labels such as Killekill, International Deejay Gigolo, Playhouse, SCI+TEC, Rush Hour, and Skylax. Different methods were employed to create this record. They scored their songs and arrangements, and new influences took hold. It became more about writing songs than producing tracks. The whole process of shaping the album took far longer than expected, especially as it grew to include such world-class guests as Tyree Cooper, Rachel Row, Kim Ann Foxman, and Hard Ton. Snuff Crew had already released remixes for Ellen Allien and Dance Disorder with BPitch Control, and they knew they were the right label for this project. Chicago house and acid house remain important to the creative work of Snuff Crew. Yet, on this third album, piano-driven '90s U.S. house, dark, old school electro and hip-house are strong influences as well. It was easy for the duo to agree on the title Behind the Masks -- it is important for the Crew to give deeper insights into their work and vision of their music, even if the masks will remain an essential trademark in their popular live shows. The Crew previously revealed a love for creating melodies that stay with you in their remix for the "Fantasy Girl" cover by Billie Ray Martin and Hard Ton, in collaboration with Robert Owens (released on their own label Snuff Trax). This influence can also be felt on this third Snuff Crew album.

Let's celebrate the great return of hip house. This haunting sound that fraternized house and hip-hop at the end of the '80s is still able to set dancefloors ablaze and trigger uncontrollable euphoria. For Work It Out, the first single off their album, Behind the Masks (BPC 274CD), Snuff Crew joined forces with pioneer and protagonist of the genre, Tyree Cooper. Snappy raps, fierce grooves, jarring sirens and wild scratching are the explosive ingredients of this tune. Cooper shows he is still in peak form decades after his worldwide hit, "Turn Up the Bass." Another guest joins the Crew on the second track of this single. The fantastic Bulgarian singer Rachel Row lends her stunning voice to "New Life," a pure house vibe added to piano and strings that penetrate your heart. Goosebumps guaranteed.

GIGOLO 254CD
|
This is the debut full-length release from mysterious German collective, Snuff Crew. For those familiar with their previous releases on labels such as Playhouse, Hour House Is Your Rush, and of course, Gigolo Records, you will be pleased to know it is business as usual on this album. According to Snuff Crew, if dance music was a building, then the 707 would be one of the principal foundations, having defined a generation of producers from Marshall Jefferson to Aphex Twin, Plastikman to Phil Collins, Daft Punk to Snuff Crew! Since dance music's inception, acid house, or the house of jack, has spawned a gospel spread by disciples that span generations. The Snuff Crew represent a new generation of "Jackers" that bring a new definition of Chicago house to dancefloors, and with this they join an illustrious list of artists that include Kikumoto Allstars, Andreas Gehm, KiNK and Neville Watson. Like these producers, their arsenal is part analog and part digital, using high-tech and up-to-date software to record timeless and irreplaceable hardware such as the 707. Their ideas for music often come from dancing in a club to listening to their favorite DJ sets or radio from Clone and early mixes from WBMX, collecting old Chicago and Italo-disco records, etc., etc. Jackin' trax sit between rougher cuts and even deeper moments, soundtracked by the oh-so-familiar beats of the 707 and the pitched-down vocals of the Snuff Crew. Snuff Crew's production coupled with old skool compression and mastering techniques give us a sonic modulation that makes this album unmistakable. The album opener is "Berghain," the title being a nod to the internationally-acclaimed club in Berlin, Snuff Crew's spiritual home. Other themes range from spreading the Gospel of Jack ("The Mission"), to sex, ("Desire"), freedom ("Free"), the eternal human battle to maintain some sort of say in your own destiny ("Control"), our deepest emotions ("Temple"), or simple excess ("Storm"). But when all this is said and done it is an album about jacking... weird, pure and simple. Featuring guest artist Rebecca Mellone.

GIGOLO 243EP
|
Germany's mysterious Snuff Crew collective return to Gigolo with two tracks of body-jacking, heart-pounding mayhem. It is fair to say that Snuff Crew love to jack, but they also offer a deep contemplativeness unique to modern dance music. For those not in the know, the title refers to Berlin's internationally-acclaimed Berghain club. Both tracks feature jacking bass riffs, raw drum machines, deep strings and old-school compression and mastering techniques whose sonic modulations will make you lose your senses.
