Madrilenian producer Alex Under -- one of Spain's most sought-after electronic artists -- follows releases on such iconic imprints as Trapez, Soma, and Plus 8, with Olas de Quila Quina, his first outing for Kompakt. The title-track only needs a handful of carefully processed sounds to tell a highly evocative story -- a focused, geometrical jam that nonetheless allows for freewheeling outbursts of creativity. The same can be said for the punching, asymmetrical acid of "El Reflejo Del Lacar" and the full-bodied bass bounce of "Lolog," as both cuts juxtapose sharp-edged shards of electronic texture with chewy, melodic synths.

After some harder releases on Trapez, Alex Under focuses on his trademark crossover techno -- not easy to label into any specific genre, but a sound full of personality. "Bailar Pegados" is the kind of track that Herbie Hancock would have carried in his vinyl case to every club. "Oh Boy" brings the listener into a robot party at the Blue Oyster, the club that gives name to the track on the B-side "La Ostra Azul," an arpeggiated retro-futuristic bomba.

SONIC 018EP

Famous Spanish producer Alex Under, known for his releases on his own CMYK label and others such as Plus 8 and Soma, is the author of this Soniculture release. A football match should be appreciated in front of a big screen and the main snack should be lupini beans, but please pay attention that you should eat them without their skin by tearing them off, one by one, with your teeth and "popping" the seed directly into your mouth. Magical techno grooves at their best, with futuristic acid lines and synth arrangements that will make the lupini beans pop into your mouth at the speed of light. Goal!

Alex Under releases a stunning follow-up to Muscle Tracks. "Mustang" is fast, deep and cool, with a nicely-controlled pace. "Charger" is massively rocking and seems to suck up all the air around it. "Firebird" is a fat-sounding house track which can be played by house DJs as well as techno DJs, using a walking bass-line and a super-tight, slapping snare and cool house vocals. It develops into a hi-energy, appegiator-driven track, showing Under's talent for moving between genres.

Two artistic remixes from Alex Under's 1,2,3, Responda O Trapez 12" that draw a lot of new energy from the original tracks. Alexi Delano & Xpansul present a versatile mix and a talent for the symbiosis of rhythm and sequence. On the flip, Mihalis Safras puts his hands on "Extrapezlo," creating a joyous, Chicago-flavored jacking remix that will make you smile.

"Gris Anthemo, on the colorful label from Madrid moves the body, stimulating the most powerful sexual organ: the brain. Both tracks are clearly D.O.T (Dancefloor Oriented Techno), and will produce big happy faces from the very first note. Emblematic and joyful, side A contains 'Gris': the next anthem of the unstoppable party -- pure fun, with a cult vocal sample included. Side B, 'Anthemo,' offers the more experimental side of this loop artist, understood as a hypnotic element capable of making a mass of zombies enter a trance. Fake congas -- because they are beats appearing and disappearing during the composition, and a lot of special effects draw an outstanding production that offers various interpretation options. Alex Under's sound has evolved a lot from Verde Guisante, his first release, but he feeds his own mythology, where multiple and mutant realities and free structures are common ground for an artist that loves to change his skin as lizards do. A state of mind that celebrates spontaneity."

Alex Under's 5th release on Trapez, 1,2,3, Responda O Trapez marks a difference in sound and design. The A-side track is a jolly groovy uplifting funkateer with acoustic sounds popping in and out to give it a cool breathing aura. "Trapezones Erectos" on the flipside is an alert techno monster that is based on a modulating alarm signal sound, micro melodies that are sped up, leading up to a crazy sequence in the last third of the track. "Otra Pezera" is a cool rhythmic track with voices and sounds from public places. It flows into a heavy, sequenced bassline and gives the DJ an opportunity to be creative.

"Alex Under returns after his Trapez album with a big two- track slammer, fusing the Spanish rhythm and flavor that makes him so special to the post techno hemisphere. 'El Diluvio Azul' is an electric rhythm monster, which glows through its polyrhythmic patterns with tiny but shiny melody-notations connected with them as tight as only atoms can be attracted to each other. The track reminds a bit of Jeff Samuels 'Knob' but adds the Mediterranean love for this special groove that only Alex Under controls. 'El Diluvio Azul' docks on to Under's LP but strides even straighter towards the dance floor, sucking in emotions there and so wins in size continuous. Alex Under is the Spanish plastic man who manages to vitalize and actualize the the best moments of the past and then troughs them on the dance floor with skill. The opponent 'El Danubio Universal' has the bass line of the year! When after one minute Alex Under adds this bass line the world turns in a different direction. More minimal and sparse but fat in sound, this track rocks floors!"

"Collage is the debut for Madrid's Alex Under on Plus 8, delivering a sound that is complimented exactly by its title. A mastermind in blending a variety of electronic influences, his hybrid version of rhythm and sound is a moody mash up of jazzy yet experimental techno. His productions are based on deconstruction and variation with equal parts of humor and precision. The dancefloor-aimed 'El Encuentro' moves and weaves rhythm and percussion. 'Fortuito' is challenging as it is playful, starting off with scattered clicks grasping for the beat until the kick delivers, bringing the mood into gear with a simple loop melody and deep bassline. Not afraid to bring the beat, Under heads back to the floor for 'Distantes,' which kicks it into gear from the start, working a minimal approach into maximized power. His attention to noise, effects and off-key sequences can make your hairs on your neck stand up. Collage is the mixed beauty of a tough techno record complemented with elements of minimal purity. Madrid's man at large, Under the DJ and producer along with a crew of friends have been making waves with their CMYK and Apnea labels along with his excellent releases for Germany's Trapez."

"After his debut on Trapez with Las Bicicletas Son Para el Verano, Alex Under strikes again with his micro-sheepy-pumping techno, more cerebral than ever, not only by the reference to the tracklisting, but also because of the sheer, absorbent and precise tracks' construction. Unmistakable already by the way in which he joins, by way of collage, the most alienating rhythms and melodies, Alex Under submerges again in a rollercoaster of rhythms characterized by the way he assembles rhythms and alienates melodies as a very personal collage, Alex Under takes us on a rhythm roller coaster always mutating at every beat, transforming a legacy that goes from Detroit to trance, always keeping in mind that less is more. Mental stimulation and physical drive is the key to his tracks."

"In September 2005 he released his first groundbreaking album Dispositivos de mi Granja LP -- which followed his three EPs on Trapez. This new 12" features 'Las Bicicletas son para el Verano' remixes by two of Alex Under's most respected producers: the Vampire from Düsseldorf aka Oliver Hacke one of Trapez's core artists and Scottish Alex Smoke from Soma records. With his version of 'Las Bicicletas,' Oliver Hacke presents one of his most powerful techno pieces so far. Even stronger and more mighty than his previous hit records. A 100% techno universe... sounding as if techno had never happened. In comparison Alex Smoke starts cool and with much understatement. During the flow of his 'Rusty Bike Mix' Alex inserts powerful basslines building up friction and suspense. A very deep, evolving track with a long dynamic. A masterpiece."

"Directly from Madrid, Alex Under delivers his debut for Trapez. The owner of Cmykmusik seduces us with 3 tracks filled with his own trademark, clicky and groovy techno to burn any dancefloor around the world. Side A is a monster killer infused with mutant techno, fast and furious. Steve Bug meets Akufen in a two person elevator in Zagreb. A track that goes from craziness to minimal groove and back again. Leaves mouths wide open and eyes shut down. Side B contains what is his first approach to house music, with sampled vocals and deep and crazy rhythms, melting classic techno with his own vision of fractured dance music. Always innovative, Alex creates a flow that refuses to be linear, delivering a groove that changes and evolves constantly...his intention was to fuse the 3 basics of dance music, an hybrid containing the best of all of them: the groove of house music, the vitality and rawness of techno and the hypnotic melodies of trance. Alex has worked all the 3 tracks through a deconstruction process, remixing them from the initial basic track."
