In 2014, Young Marco traveled to the islands of Indonesia, visiting several islands within the archipelago including Bali. The voyage was on invitation by Island Of The Gods Records; allowing Marco to immerse himself in the Indigenous culture that still exists in Indonesia. For Marco it was also a look back to his Indonesian roots, with his late grandfather born and raised in Indonesia. The brief was to capture the spirit, ambience, and atmosphere of the islands as part of the labels "Island Explorer" album series. The project embodies the "east meets west" approach the label has become known for in regards to cultures colliding. A respectful collaboration between local musicians who have played to their gods, unchanged in thousands of years alongside Marco's contemporary expression. They are connected only through the universal language of sound and a mutual willingness to collaborate and experiment. A number of sessions were arranged -- recording Gamelan, gong, and bamboo musicians from nearby temples. Island instruments and organic sounds meeting Marcos drum machines and synthesizers in a number of improvised jam sessions. Field recordings were also gathered from jungles, oceans, and streets, capturing both the ambient and chaotic side of life in Indonesia. These sounds and recordings were taken back into Marco's Amsterdam studio and re interpreted into the Bahasa album -- a sonic expression that captures the mood and atmosphere of the islands through the eyes and ears of Young Marco. Almost five years after the trip, the project is now available!

Born Marco Sterk, Young Marco certainly doesn't come from a standard DJ background. A former skate rat who grew up loving American post-hardcore and '90s hip-hop as much as early Warp Records, he's been affiliated over the years with such Amsterdam institutions such as Rush Hour, Redlight Records, and, of course, Dekmantel. Still, there's no question that he's always followed his own path, even when playing his favorite records meant he was occasionally clearing dancefloors. Things have changed since then, of course, as Marco regularly plays around the globe and has been widely hailed not just for his DJ talents but also for his digging prowess and uncanny ability to pluck jams out of genres, eras, and locations that even veteran DJs will often ignore. In his mind, "the joy of getting home and finding out something is unexpectedly awesome is way more exciting than taking your time on a big stack of curated records." Still, Marco's entry in the Selectors series isn't some soulless collection of holy-grail rarities. "Where's the fun in that?" he asks. "Anybody with an internet connection can check what flavor-of-the-month records are in demand." Just like the first Selectors compilation (SLCTRS 001CD/LP, 2016), this is not a mix CD, but a collection of hand-picked, unmixed tracks that Sterk has personally chosen from his own vinyl archives. Moreover, Marco has put together a collection of tracks that represent not only how he plays music, but also how he makes music himself. The songs here are melodic, electronic, and bound together by a refreshing sense of naiveté. Nothing sounds overly calculated; the tunes here span several decades and include dollar-bin records, avant-garde records, club records, and yes, a few things that collector-types have likely been looking to get their hands on. It's not meant to be a grand statement, as Marco would rather provide an honest snapshot of his musical tastes and share a few of his favorite tracks and artists in the process. Includes tracks by Danny Boy, Gerrit Hoekema, Ghostwriters, Larry Heard, Wolf Müller, The Force Dimension, Frank Youngwerth, Green Baize, Ray Tracing, and Personal FX.

SAFE 001LP

Young Marco delivers a compilation of his own remixes to inaugurate his Safe Trip label. Featured are his versions of tracks by Francis Bebey, HNNY, and Michael Ozone, his 2015 remix of Vangelis Katsoulis's "Enigma," and a couple of previously unreleased remixes of Jacco Gardner and Zulu Pearls, plus his remixes of Heatsick, Mock & Toof, Causa, and Tony G. Few have developed as distinctive an identity as quickly as Young Marco. Since his full-length debut in 2014, the Dutch vinyl obsessive has shot from relative obscurity to global renown, building his name through brilliant, vastly wide-reaching DJ sets and optimistic, rhythm-obsessed, simplistic-but-detailed production.

Young Marco now comes out with his debut solo release, featuring two aquatic-themed disco jams. Side A is a fast-paced underwater race sounding like an orca chasing a school of fish. The B-side keeps it smooth with a beachy, Mediterranean love song. Another special release from Hand Of God. Limited edition of 300 copies.
