Sonic Healing is the third full-length release by Martin Steer's Bad Stream project. Conceived and recorded in March 2020, it reflects the tectonic shifts in society taking place at that time while also responding to personal tragedy: having suffered a stroke, his mother lost her language ability. Having been deprived of verbal and physical interaction with other humans, her son's music became her primary means of communication with him. For the album, Steer sent a single guitar loop to twelve musicians from the extended network of his ANTIME label who improvised with the recording, which was later collaged by Steer into a single, 39-minute long track that stylistically ranges from feverish jazz to brooding ambient and abstract electronica. Together with the Iranian artist Arash Akbari's vivid animations based on generative algorithms and real-time processing, Sonic Healing does not ask how one person can deal with turmoil in their life alone, but how we can create new forms of being together with art as a mediator.

Bad Stream is guitars and machines vanishing in the spaces between Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails only to reemerge amidst ambient, noise, and drone. Bad Stream, then, is his modus operandi -- a hybrid soundtrack to the feelings of resignation, isolation, and cynicism within neoliberal cyberspace and to that strangely numbing comfort of bodies transmuting into zeros and ones in real time. "I look at my phone even when I play guitar," says Martin Steer, "and that isn't even entirely voluntary. The 2010s really changed my perception of how digital technologies and social media affect me as a musician. Through Bad Stream I want to make sense of this particular kind of anxiety, and to use sensory overstimulation as a way to develop an independent and progressive musical language." The past seven years took Martin and his laptop and guitar from Berlin to Mexico and Nepal and, as a founding member of Frittenbude, into the German charts and to various festival stages. And yet, Bad Stream is a true "Berlin album", out of Friedrichshain, Neukölln, and Kreuzberg and will be released on Martin Steer's own label ANTIME. It was recorded with real drums and programmed beats, with shoegaze guitars, acid baselines, piano, smartphone synths, violins, field recordings from the darknet and his voice, whose hopeless timbre conveys reflections on systems, the future, drugs, people, and his own place. In his ever-expanding A/V live shows and in the music videos, this is supplemented by complex visuals.

The Berlin-based trio Soft Grid capture the explosive energy of its celebrated live shows with their debut LP Corolla for Antime. Soft Grid was started in 2014 in an abandoned hospital ward by Jana Sotzko (Dropout Patrol) and Theresa Stroetges (Golden Diskó Ship), who had previously been working together in the improvisation project Epiphany Now. After their spontaneously composed and recorded tape release Stingrays was issued through Berlin's Twaague Records in the summer of 2015, the British drummer and producer Sam Slater was recruited more or less directly from a Berlin dancefloor to join the band for live shows. He became a full member in no time. Since then, the three-piece have shared stages around Germany with such diverse acts as Des Ark, Milemarker, Messer, or even Tolouse Low Trax. Corolla is as much of an improvisational effort as their live shows: not really. Just like their gigs - which have all members wandering around to take over duties on synthesizers, bass, guitar, viola, and microphones - Corolla is a carefully mapped out, compositional whole, recorded live over two days in Salon Berlin by Sylvain Livache. It showcases the trio's taste for ventures into the realms of extreme acoustic sounds and electronic textures as well as their knack for catchy hooks and driving rhythms. Even amidst the heaviest synth breakdowns, there's something joyful to cling to. Soft Grid make music that is continuously twisting and shifting, which immerses itself in the steady flow of sonic events without losing focus. Anything goes on Corolla, and when it does, the three head in exactly the same direction. From the massive opening chords of "Herzog On A Bus" to the subtle Chicago-style post-rock influences on "Hospital Floor" and the erratic finale which is the title track, Soft Grid create a musical narrative throughout their debut LP which reflects its lyrical themes. While the lyrics of Corolla, themselves a collaborative effort, sample everything from a Werner Herzog documentary to the eerie atmosphere of that hospital ward where the band was born, there is at least one leitmotiv which ties them together: Soft Grid are first and foremost concerned with moving forward. And they will.

^L_ follows his 2014 debut album, Love Is Hell, released digitally by Antime, and an extensive 2015 tour of Germany with Mexican labelmate AAAA, with a more dancefloor-oriented 12" on the Berlin-based imprint. From the slamming '90s-style techno belter "She Only Loves Me Because She Doesn't Live With Me" and the eerie techno-house hybrid "Hello, I'm Richard Clayderman" to the hard-hitting breakbeats on "Phil Spector" and "Locked-In Syndrome" and the allusions to heyday 2-step on "Too Weird To Live, Too High To Die," ^L_'s sample-heavy aesthetics are as distinctive as they are cohesive. The narrative of The Outsider knits the already consistent EP even more tightly together and is expressed by the voice of none other than the late David Foster Wallace.

André Wittmann's debut album under the moniker Spur was made with both the body and the mind, in order to indulge in an odd but somehow familiar "dance of cultures," as the young Lübeck-based Bavarian and member of pandoras.box calls it. "I find it disturbing to see how all those fields of music are still strictly separated until this day. I'd rather see them all combined," he explains. Nowhereland compiles a selection of the best cuts out of 20 to 30 compositions Spur perfected during a month-long stay in Ghent in early 2014. Seemingly odd time signatures form the backbone of what are essentially club-orientated tracks. Spur, who started playing drums as child, took to other instruments like guitar, marimba, violin, and piano, and draws on wide range of influences, from hip-hop to Stravinsky to flamenco to gamelan music, approaching songwriting both theoretically and intuitively. Fontarrian's debut effort for Berlin-based label Antime offers a glimpse into a fragile yet eclectic spectrum consisting of loopy vocal bits, slowly unwinding washes of dream-like ambience, distinctively (s)tumbling, almost jazzy percussions, and an ever-present, blissful warmth. The latter emanates from and sucks you into what seems to be a world of its own. Like a lo-fi attempt at capturing momentary twists of the heart through 10 significantly diverse tracks -- imperfect nonetheless -- the album feels like a mixtape you've set out to record for someone special, but somehow never got around to.
