ASTRAY 002-1EP
|
UK techno heavyweight Mark Broom and Berlin's Discrete Circuit have teamed up before; MBDC is their first fully-fledged collaboration. The EP opens with a superbly engineered kick and counterpoint texture that allows for an otherworldly synth to slowly worm its way out of the abyss. Groovy, tooly, slightly dissonant; blips, claps, punctuation where it works. Just the right shade of reverb and modulation, push and pull in the arrangement, The final track is a remix by Astray's other in-house producer, H4L, a frenetic, broken, IDM-influenced belter with scattered and distorted 808s.

Discrete Circuit's Control Zero EP marks his most straightforward installment yet. The title track gets down to business without detours by growing into a powerful drum avalanche that combines bone-dry kicks with a frenetic atmosphere. Ed Davenport completes the A-side with a remix from his DJ and production alter ego Inland. Although both tracks on the flip pick up the pace and intensity, they venture out into less dense, more emotional directions. "Dimensional Equivalent" embodies a no-nonsense rollout while "Conjugate" works with similar vocabulary while shifting the focus towards both the varied percussion and the narrative progression.

Inaugurating the release, the cleverly designed "Oberservate" drives forward with relentless kick drums that merge into self-indulgent pads slowly growing into a stargazing techno tale. P.Leone's remix sticks to the original's covertness while adding more depth by peeling out the pensive atmosphere as his lead synth gears more empathically towards the dancefloor. Discrete Circuit's ambient version of "Remote Conversation" sees the monologic acid line encounter blood-boiling pads passing through some unknown territory. Blind Observatory's remix rips out the principal elements from the original in order to create a pulsating ominousness reminiscent of his trademark neo-futuristic journeys.

ASTRAY 001-1EP
|
Berlin's Away launches its sublabel Astray with the Road Force EP by Discrete Circuit. The EP provides four progressive tracks mirroring his interest in a growing techno narrative as well as mind-manipulating onomatopoeia. The title track's on-edge techno design quickly accumulates into some kind of hounding; not knowing if you're the hunted or the hunter. "Stress Resultant" increases the pace; the restless vibe is contrasted by melodic synth patterns. "Controlled Error" exhibits the dialogue between harmony and chaos in which shrieking, yet claustrophobic shades play hide-and-seek ultimately unfolding a gloomy funk, while "Circuitry" is completely carried by shape-shifting, pulsing soundscapes.
