CONTEXT 010CD
|
"Spanning 70 minutes and 27 tracks, Context Unravelled showcases six years and 16 adventurous releases on the San Francisco-based Context label, many of which have been available on vinyl only until now. In addition to Cali-techno heroes Sutekh (founder of Context), Safety Scissors, Twerk, Kit Clayton, and Dave Aju, the mix features a Plethora of international talent including Portable (South Africa/UK), Ben Nevile (Canada), Murcof (Mexico), Klunder (Australia), and Wang Inc. (Italy). A myriad of production techniques and cultural references are seamlessly integrated into this gripping, beat-driven narrative, from the spacious, orchestral soundscapes of Murcof to the silky dub-house gymnastics of Ben Nevile to the razor-sharp, algorithmically crafted techno of Twerk, to the African-inflected rhythms of Portable. Taken separately, each release reflects the personality and background of each artist, but with the aid of two turntables and a mixer, Sutekh has alchemically fused them into a captivating mix. About Context Free Media: founded in 1999 by Seth Horvitz aka Sutekh, the San Francisco-based Context label has remained a platform for music which presents the listener with more musical questions than answers. While Context has strong roots in dance music, most notably techno, it explores uncomfortable areas where this definition makes no sense. Never afraid to take chances on new talent, Context has released debut recordings by artists such as Safety Scissors, Portable, and Murcof, all of whom have gone on to record critically acclaimed full-length albums on Plug Research, ~scape, and the Leaf label."

CONTEXT 015CD

"Woods Roads is the second full-length album by Italy's Bartolomeo Sailer, who is known for his releases on Germany's Sonig label (run by Mouse on Mars) and France's bip-hop, among others. Inspired by a recent road trip across the pacific northwest and by the eerie, surreal psychological landscapes in the films of Lynch, Kubrick, and Jarmusch, Woods Roads promises to be an intriguing and enigmatic journey through the maze of highways inside the mind of Wang Inc. A steady, understated techno (or is it foxtrot?) Pulse runs throughout much of the album, mirroring the rhythm of the painted lines in the center of the road as they pass from the headlights into the shadows. Often, the rhythm is swallowed up by mysterious tones and melodies or surrounded by swarms of dancing insects. Ambient, but more unsettling than soothing, the textures of Woods Roads hypnotize you, imparting a false sense of security. Whatever you do, don't fall asleep at the wheel. In the words of the artist: 'for what is music useful? Probably to live better. And if to live better, we have to search for new places and situations, music is one of the best 'instruments' to reach these places, experience them, and describe them. Woods Roads is born with the trip, with the desire to find a new place and with the fascination of discovering it. A place that represents a new option in life, far away from the chaos and hysterics of urban congestion, incubated and constantly lived within the four walls, always different, but somehow still the same, a never-ending day life in which there is more green and oxygen on the TV screen than within those four walls. Woods Roads goes beyond the concept of ecological music, beyond the research of the natural voice of the deteriorated environment, to reach the 'integral' music that drives back the hyper-urban structure into contact with nature. A difficult and dangerous trip, seen in a artistic way or a human way, but necessary. To live better'."

CONTEXT 014EP

"A relatively new face on the international scene, Dave Aju has been an important part of the San Francisco-bay area electronic music community for nearly 10 years, first as a DJ and now as a producer. His debut release appeared recently on the Circus Company label from Paris, and Context is proud to present the second of many. On 'Dive and Lie Wrecked,' Dave excavated his sample bank from a handful of scratched up LPs found at a garage sale for 25 cents each. Realizing that most of them were live recordings, he focused in on the idiosyncrasies of the live environment: stage interjections, crowd noise, and room ambience, looking for the sounds that most listeners would neglect. Out of these elements, he has crafted a multi-faceted six track EP with beautiful noisy textures, edgy percussion, warm bass, and a healthy dose of minimal funk. The two middle tracks will get the dancefloor rumbling, but the six tracks together make for an engaging listening experience from beginning to end."

CONTEXT 013EP

"Italy's Bartolomeo Sailer aka Wang Inc. is known for his releases on Mouse On Mars' Sonig label and France's bip-hop. These three mixes provide a DJ-friendly sneak preview of Wang Inc.'s upcoming full-length on Context, also entitled Woods Roads. Inspired by a recent road trip across the Pacific Northwest, and by the eerie psychological landscapes in the films of Lynch, Kubrick, and Jarmusch, the album promises to be an enigmatic journey through the maze of highways inside Wang Inc.'s circuitous, sometimes silly, and always thoughtful mind."

CONTEXT 010A-EP
|
"The first installment of a three-part series, Unravelled is a mega-collaboration between all artists on Context, each remixing the other's material from the back-catalog. Parts one and two will appear in 12" format, while the third installment will be a CD mixed by Sutekh, fusing the remixes with the original versions. Volume 1 contains four mixes, each with a distinctive personality. On side A, Sutekh takes Ben Nevile's material for a pigeon funk workout, while Kit Clayton finds out what would happen if a pack of gremlins were let loose in Timbaland's studio. On the B side, Portable's signature stuttered rhythms and organic digital chaos shuffle their way into Sutekh's 'Suite K' side project, while Twerk works binaural recordings of conversations with Portable into a slowly evolving piece of deep, atmospheric techno."

CONTEXT 012EP

"Half Hidden Behind Trees is the debut release by Klunder aka Brad Nederpelt, a 21 year old resident of one of the most secluded cities in the world: Perth, Australia. With a keen sense for both sound design and harmony, Klunder makes jagged, swinging techno full of scurrying critters. The four tracks on this EP vary from lazy, stargazing house to chopped up jack trax. A perfect addition to the growing international roster of Sutekh's Context label."
