One of the greatest classics of Brazilian popular music, with Jorge Ben mixing funky samba, Afro-Brazilian beats, and crunching guitars. Jorge Ben was the most prominent figure of the samba soul and samba funk scenes of the '70s in Brazil, and África Brasil is probably the most famous of his '70s recordings.

Reissue, originally recorded in September 1975 at A&R Recording Studios in New York and released in 1977 on Baystate Japan. Classic jazz album by Charles Greenlee who worked extensively throughout his career with Archie Shepp who also participated in the sessions for John Coltrane's A Love Supreme in late 1964. Late in the 1940s he converted to Islam, changing his name to Harneefan Majeed; he continued to use Charles Greenlee for professional purposes, though he is sometimes credited with his Muslim last name as a sort of nickname. Great spiritual jazz album includes the classic vocal "He's Gone" and the classic track "Steam". Blue vinyl.

Reissue, originally released in 1970. The combination of Jorge Ben and Trio Mocotó had already produced great things when Força Bruta first appeared in 1970. Ben's self-titled album of the year before had reeled off a succession of Brazilian hits, including "País Tropical" and "Cadê Teresa," and made the four musicians very busy as a result. Força Bruta was a slightly different album, a slice of mellow samba soul that may perhaps have been the result of such a hectic schedule during 1969. One of the hidden gems in Jorge Ben's discography, it's a wonderful album because it kept everyone's plentiful musical skills intact while simply sailing along on a wonderful acoustic groove that may have varied little but was all the better for its agreeable evenness. The songs may have been more difficult to distinguish -- virtually every one began with acoustic guitar, similar instrumentation, and Ben's caressing vocals over the top -- but it made the record one of the best in Ben's hearty career.

Reissue, originally released in 1976. Letta Mbulu was lucky when she emigrated from South Africa, where blacks were troubled and ridiculed by the Apartheid system. She was lucky to rescue a recording deal with A&M Records, and even the label's founder, Herb Albert, produced the record, Johnny Mandel did the orchestrations, and Quincy Jones wrote the liner notes. However, it wasn't only luck -- Letta Mbulu's talents as a singer are such that they couldn't be overheard. Her husband, Caiphus Semenya, also from South Africa and a musician, helped her throughout. There's Music In The Air from 1976 features songs varying in tempos and moods and languages, and there's a mellow aura of purity and peace, almost innocence, that captures the listener.

Reissue of Demian's self-titled album, originally released in 1971. One of the bands that helped build the great Austin, TX music scene (the "live music capital of the world"), Demian was actually Bubble Puppy with a new name and sound. While Bubble Puppy was classic psychedelia, Demian was hard rock in the vein of bands like Atomic Rooster. Recorded live-in-studio at LA's legendary "Record Plant" studio in 1970, Demain was also one of the first bands to feature dueling lead guitars. Despite the high quality of the songs and the local buzz this album generated at the time, due to mismanagement, Demian soon faded into the record collecting beyond. Aqua blue vinyl.

Reissue of Bokaj Retsiem's Psychedelic Underground, originally released in 1969. Credited as one of the best late '60s German psych-rock albums, Bokaj Retsiem's ("meister Jakob" in reverse) Psychedelic Underground is an eccentric, soulful, acid and fuzzy rockin' essay that clearly prefigures a part of the krautrock movement. Featuring Rainer Deigner, former guitar for the '60s beat German group Former Bonds, as the only credited musician and composer on this album (although other musicians assisted him on bass, keyboards, and that B3 Hammond and Leslie sound), this is basically Rainer's freaked-out tribute to his favorite children's song, "Meister Jakob", consisting in trippy instrumental sections, furiously savage E-guitar crescendos, amazing psych-rock improvisation, with just a hint of '60s US psych-garage. A real enthusiastic psych-kraut trip for fans of Vanilla Fudge, Hendrix, and Iron Butterfly. Cyan blue vinyl.

Reissue. Asylum has a striking cover artwork, very typical of the style of the day, and was Cressida's second album of eight extended rock workouts, with Peter Jennings's superb keyboard playing backed by John Culley on lead guitar, enhancing the lead vocals of Angus Cullen. With extra percussion and orchestral accompaniment, Cressida's sound has often been compared to their contemporaries, the Moody Blues. White vinyl; gatefold sleeve.

Reissue. Originally released in 1970. One reason early 1970s Vertigo releases hold up so well is they were progressive but not explicitly arty. This Gravy Train album is a fantastic example. Basically, this is blues derived rock. But as many of the best progressive bands, Gravy Train did not try to reinvent the wheel, or make the wheel a symphony. A fresh turnaround here, an expansion of a bridge there, and the form was new with only subtle modifications. With the flute giving this music a sharp and welcome twist and roots deep in both jazz and blues, Gravy Train has not dated a bit. Gold vinyl; gatefold sleeve.

Reissue. Originally released in 1971. The intriguing story of Universe is that the little-known British band were driving through Norway and after breaking down were offered assistance by a gent living nearby who happened to have a recording studio in his house. True or not the resulting collection of songs is a great slice of often hard, blue-collar blues rock, with some harmonica, piano and organ. Includes two bonus tracks. Turquoise vinyl.

Limited repress; reissue of Flower Travellin' Band's debut album Anywhere, originally released in 1970. Anywhere is the first album from the legendary Japanese rockers fronted by Yuya Uchida. Although an album consisting mainly of cover versions, Anywhere still exhibited many of the musical traits that were to come to the fore on the band's next release, the classic 1971 album Satori, an album of original material delivered with panache by the increasingly confident Uchida. An album made memorable by its risqué cover as well as its ground-breaking approach to Western rock music. Orange vinyl.

Definitive reissue of this no wave classic, originally issued in 1979. The 21st century has produced a new generation of young contenders of all kinds, who have, within months, spread a new string of names across the planet such as The Rapture, Playgroup, LCD Soundsystem, Liars, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Radio 4, and the likes, just to name a few. Once again, the heat was initiated in NYC, even though its Lower East Side epicenter "cleaned up" by Giuliani and Bloomberg, has moved a few blocks east and across the river to Brooklyn and Williamsburg. It might be wise to remind the younger ones among us that the origins of this new musical cycle is, for the most part, rooted in the no wave movement of which James Siegfried aka James White, aka James Chance is undoubtedly one of its most prominent figures. New York City was hands down the artistic telluric center of the second half of the 20th century, especially from the '70s, on. Rising from the ashes of the Velvet Underground, a slew of local bands redefined the aesthetics of rock n' roll which the merchants of the temple hastened to rename under various designations, such as punk, new wave, no wave, jazz-funk or even disco and disco-punk without forgetting to mention the original electro designation pioneered by the band Suicide. One of the indispensable and emblematic figures of the mid-70s is of course James Chance. Previous reissues of the Contortions and James White albums on Infinite Zero have been deleted for the better part of a decade. These are all officially sanctioned by the originating label, Ze Records. White vinyl.
