The Alan Bown (Set)!, live in session from 1966 to 1970. The history of British rock n' roll of the 1960s is filled with the names of homegrown performers who, despite enjoying the favor of critics, music columnists, and club audiences, never managed to make a permanent mark on the record charts. Alan Bown was a case-in-point, a trumpet player who organized a series of bands in the 1960s -- principally known as the Alan Bown Set -- who received rave reviews and attracted healthy live audiences, but which were never able to successfully transfer their club sound onto vinyl. Radio sessions offered something much closer to the favored live setting and from 1966-70, their frenetic energy and creative flow was captured for a radio audience who would witness the transition of The Alan Bown! through R&B and soul to psychedelic rock. London Calling presents The Alan Bown! (Set), live in session at the BBC 1966-1970. Professionally remastered original broadcasts with full color booklet with background liners and rare archival memorabila. Includes interviews.

East of Eden, live in concert 1970 (April, August, and September). In the late '60s and early '70s, East of Eden were one of the hardest working bands in the country, but countless personnel changes and a curious hit single obliterated the original purpose of the band. Yet when they started out, they were at the forefront of experimental and progressive music of the era. Since then, they have largely been overshadowed by the million-seller names such as King Crimson, The Nice, and Yes, and their uncharacteristic hit "Jig-A-Jig" only served to damage their artistic credibility and intent. East of Eden found their niche with electric violin, blues guitar, saxophone, and an underlying jazz instinct coupled with a generous degree of psychedelic menace. They managed to record two albums in their 1969/70 heyday, but their radio sessions from the period remain more elusive. London Calling presents three rare UK performances from sessions recorded for BBC radio and John Peel in 1970. A thrilling opportunity to hear the real British progressive underground in action. Superb, professionally remastered original broadcasts with the BBC radio broadcast segments. Includes full-color booklet with background liners and timeline photos.

Soft Machine, live from the Théâtre de la Musique, Paris on March 2nd, 1970. Despite their gradual dissolution in the late '70s, Soft Machine's stock has never been higher thanks to a steady stream of archival recordings that continue to surface and throw light on the importance of varying line-ups. The quintet version of the band, captured at the Théâtre de la Musique, Paris on March 2nd, 1970 for France's Pop Deux TV show features that short lived and often lamented line-up of Lyn Dobson and Elton Dean on their respective reeds accompanying the obligatory Hopper, Ratledge, and Wyatt. The Paris date in March caught Dobson near the end of his tenure which came two weeks later. Suffice to say, the historical value of this recording is undoubted while rooted in the five-man line-up that was joyous, but sadly all too brief. London Calling bends your ear with a rare, captivating performance from our beloved Softs, live in Paris, 1970. Covering their first two albums and songs exclusive to performances from this period. Includes the entire Pop Deux TV broadcast. Visually interesting, but moreover, stunning to hear. Personnel: Mike Ratledge - Lowrey organ, Hohner pianet; Robert Wyatt - drums, vocals; Hugh Hopper - bass; Elton Dean - alto sax, Saxello; Lyn Dobson - soprano sax, flute, voice, harmonica. Superb, professional re-mastering. Includes background liners, rare archival photos and equipped with mortal stimulants. Hand-numbered gatefold sleeve; 180 gram splatter vinyl.

Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, live in session, London, 1966-1969. In the burgeoning soul and R&B scene of London in the mid-1960s, the likes of Geno Washington and his Ram Jam Band and The Foundations were emerging as its voice for swathes of eager young modernists. At the same time, American-born singer Jimmy James travelled to London with The Vagabonds, an all-Jamaican line-up that would ooze authenticity and style. An early affinity with The Who's Peter Meaden gave them cool prestige, but it was the instinctive Pye label that would once again take the opportunity to capture the raw energy of a homegrown soul/R&B act. Jimmy James and The Vagabonds recorded numerous sessions at the request of Brian Matthew and remain one of Britain's best-loved soul bands of the 1960s. London Calling presents Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, live in session for broadcast by the BBC, from London 1966-1969. Revealing ultimately rare and exclusive recordings as well as insightful interviews with band members at the time, this collection makes for a compelling addition for fans and collectors of the 1960s British music scene. Professionally re-mastered original broadcast recordings with background liners and period photos. Full-color booklet with background liners and rare images, includes interviews. Digitally remastered for greatly enhanced sound quality.

Cliff Richard, live on air 1966-1970. Cliff -- one word is all you need. He's been a star in British music longer than anyone, an icon that transcends generations and who's sold millions of records in his time. But he's become so much a part of the fabric of the music business that it's easy to forget he made his start as a somewhat rebellious rocker; Britain's answer to Elvis. Famously quoted as "undoubtedly the most important pop symbol modern British culture has produced," Cliff Richard had spent his formative career with The Shadows (aka The Drifters), a partnership that had given rise to "Move It", credited as being one of the first authentic rock and roll songs produced outside the United States. Cliff eventually went solo and continued recording hit records up until 1970, but his popularity never declined nor did his work schedule. Combined with exclusive recordings and revealing interviews with host Brian Matthew, his numerous appearances for British broadcasting ultimately account for his huge popularity, versatility and prevailing talent. London Calling presents five halcyon years of Sir Cliff Richard, live on air in London. Superb and professionally re-mastered original radio broadcasts with background liners, rare and original memorabilia and timeline photos. Includes interviews. Digitally remastered.

Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas, live in session, London, 1965-1967. Billy J Kramer (and The Dakotas) sessions for Brain Matthew and the BBC tells a classic story of how music evolved throughout its halcyon decade. The Herd live in session, London, 1967-1969. The story of The Herd is largely symbolic of similar aged bands from the period whose wide-eyed passion and hunger may have been exploited by a corporate enterprise, but through that, were ultimately given the opportunity to shine. London Calling presents The Herd live in session from London, 1967-1969. Professionally re-mastered original broadcast recordings; includes interviews. London Calling presents Pentangle's Live On Air 1967-1969, including performances from the Danny Thompson Trio with John McLaughlin. The high profile names of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch remain coveted enough to warrant excitement at any retrospective release, but combined with Danny Thompson and Jacqui McShee, this is a delightful insight into one of Britain's finest folk rock bands to emerge in the late '60s. Pentangle's legacy lies in an abundance of fragile, acoustic wonder spanning six albums with Transatlantic and Reprise Records from 1968 to 1972. Between the studio, television and festival appearances, Pentangle visited venues such as the Playhouse Theatre and Paris Theatre for the BBC. These pristine sessions reveal a valuable insight into the creative mindset directing the band in their heyday. London Calling presents Pentangle's prized appearances for Top Gear and Top of the Pops from November '68 to July '69, including a duet of Jacqui McShee and John Renbourn on Night Ride in December 1968. Professionally re-mastered original broadcasts with background liners and rare period photos. First time on vinyl. Dark green, 180 gram vinyl; hand-numbered fold-over sleeve with insert.

The best of Donovan, live from 1965-1969. Donovan Leitch burst into the UK hit parade in March 1965 with a #4 hit for Pye Records in "Catch The Wind". This recording had been preceded by a three-week run on the TV program Ready Steady Go, unprecedented for an artist yet to release his first record. While Granada had Ready Steady Go, the BBC had a handful of contemporary light programs for radio to host the "happening" current acts such as Saturday Club, Folk Room, and later; Nightride and Top Gear. Here, you travel back to 1965, where Donovan made numerous consecutive trips into BBC's Paris Theatre Studios, presented here are his best performed tracks between 1965-1969, accompanying himself on guitar with additional stand-up bass provided by Spike Heatley and Danny Thompson. This landmark release also includes fascinating interviews with host Brian Matthew. Digitally remastered, first time on vinyl. The best of Lulu, live from 1964-1967, joined by The Luvvers and Bean & Loopy's Lot. Since shouting out her first chart record way back in April 1964, Lulu's profile in the pop mainstream has seen a wealth of Top 10 hits and international success. The '70s may not have offered the same rewards, but pairings with boy bands in the 1990s such as Take That and singer Ronan Keating saw a resurgence in her profile and popularity. However, turning the clock way back to her 1965 heyday with her Scottish counterparts The Luvvers, you can trace her story and irrepressible climb to become one of Britain's most esteemed golden girls courtesy of her performances in session for the BBC. London Calling presents for the first time, Lulu in session at the BBC, backed by beat groups such as The Luvvers and Bean & Loopy's Lot, and duets with Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, this is a fascinating account of one of British pop music's hardest working and most authentic iconic singers. Professionally remastered original broadcast recordings of her best 18 tracks during this period, and revealing interviews with Brian Matthew recalling her 1964-1967 period. The Mindbenders, live on air, recordings dating from March 22nd, 1966 to August 13th, 1968. From their huge success with Wayne Fontana and "The Game Of Love" in January 1965, Manchester group The Mindbenders were a guaranteed success story. However, in 1965, Fontana took a solo route and left the band midway through a live show in 1965. While many groups may have collapsed under the pressure, The Mindbenders suddenly found a new lease of life when they struck gold with "A Groovy Kind Of Love", a song that has become synonymous with the "Swinging '60s". It was this, and several other follow-up singles that prompted their numerous BBC sessions from 1966 to 1968. London Calling presents The Mindbenders in session for the BBC with host Brian Matthew. Includes a wealth of revealing interviews and exclusive recordings, and charts the group's journey as pop stars and the developing talent of songwriter Eric Stewart. Professionally re-mastered original broadcasts appearing here for the first time on vinyl. Includes background liners and rare archival photographs.
