MAEVE 011EP
|
Mano Le Tough releases his second 12" on Maeve, the label he co-founded with Baikal and The Drifter in 2012. "Big Words From The Small Mouth" arrives with quite the clatter. Searing synth jams scatter over a brooding kick/sub bass combo. The sharp crisp percussion drives the track forward, while various bleets, squeals, and swells give the track a raw rave vibe. "Arganol" is a trippy affair. Touching nine minutes long, the narrative unravels through woozy melodies and melancholic cameos, culminating in a burst of movement and energy perfect for the wee hours of a dancefloor.

The Maeve label, run by close friends Mano le Tough, The Drifter, and Baikal, presents Silver Walks by Ed Davenport. Although perhaps more known for his harder techno releases under his Inland moniker, Davenport returns to his roots on Silver Walks with slower, more emotive, more contemplative tracks, recorded over a pretty short period of focused studio time. "Silver Walks" is a synth-led jam. The arpeggiator holds pride of place as the center of the tune with filter tweaks complementing its progression. "Kuromaku" has a tougher attitude -- heady and cosmic with a deep kick.

Maeve co-founders Mano le Tough, The Drifter, and Baikal previously ran a Berlin club night called Passion Beat at which Aera was an occasional guest. Aera now contributes the label's sixth release, You Know Juno. Aera's original features warm arps and a dark, hypnotic bassline over a jacking house beat. On first hearing the track, The Drifter was keen to do a remix. His interpretation is a dark take on the original, boosting the bassline, adding a driving beat, and pushing the drama to high levels.
