MINDTRIP 059EP
|
Two years after the release of the acclaimed Emergency Break EP, _asstnt and Roll Dann return with their second studio collaboration on Pfirter's label. The Spanish duo is back with Old Gem, a six-track vinyl release showcasing their emerging talent and signature sound; powerful basslines and driving synths keep the pace high, perfectly distorted stabs create the rhythm, and haunting pads combined with sharp percussive elements generate the needed tension for a dark atmosphere. Meanwhile, a constant, steady groove remains pushing forward throughout the whole record. This is a much-anticipated physical record on our platform and is here for all wax lovers.

What is techno if not a powerful conduit for energy? The movement of a sequence, the surge of an effects rush, the respondent reaction in every individual dancer and the moving mass of the crowd as a whole. Whether the frequencies transmit directly into the brain through the intimacy of a headphone reverie, reverberate through the architecture of a space or fill the formless void of the open air, techno's potency to initiate and stimulate energetic events is profound. This is something Pfirter understands intimately, having spent more than 15 years exploring ways of manipulating the energy on a dancefloor. Of course, energy is not just about volume and aggression. Tonality, spatial processing and composition can have just as profound an effect as the thump of the kick drum. On his new album Altered States, Pfirter proves that point by zeroing in on the cerebral, psychedelic elements of his craft across ten incisive tracks. The Argentine producer consciously approached his second album (following 2019's The Empty Space) with a minimal mindset, using a very focused set of drum machines and synths to achieve a consistency across the record. Captured over a short burst of creativity, it's the sound of an artist pushing a limited array of tools as far as possible. Despite this concise palette, it's not an album that repeats itself, but rather an extended trip that flows from one detailed, textured immersion to the next. The dense, febrile waves of hard-oscillating ripples in "A Future In Chaos" and the sparkling, off-key chimes adorning "Yearn" all speak to Pfirter's gift for extravagant, surrealist expression within his tracks. "Altered States", by way of contrast, succeeds in its absolute immediacy -- a piledriving statement of bleep-driven intent. "Boiler" and "Convergence" land somewhere in between, coiling around kinked rhythmic incantations which still push forwards with precision while offering a different angle from which to approach the dancefloor. Cementing the idea of the whole album as a listening experience, Altered States is bookended by "Venus" and "Dissolution", two minimal exercises in drone-oriented mood setting. Spanning linear rhythms and broken beats, moments of calm and writhing intensity, Altered States offers a multitude of energetic possibilities in the mix or as a standalone piece of music. Ultimately, it's a masterful return from a leading light of the contemporary techno scene.

At the end of 2019, label boss Juan Pablo Pfirter was talking about a busy year ahead for MindTrip and now it's known exactly what he had in mind. Fresh and new collaborative projects will debut on the label in 2020, starting with his powerful shared EP with Oliver Rosemann, no stranger to our family. Together they go as dark as they feel across four impressive cuts on their Alpha release, blending peak time intensity with industrial grooves and dark side body music their own way.

MindTrip's label head, Pfirter, returns to his imprint with an assertive four-tracker on wax. As he continues his hunt to the dancefloor while remaining loyal to his signature sound of asymmetric rhythms, accurate arrangements, and fierce synth lines, Pfirter is clearly focused on the heaviest side of his own palette. Dosis Multiple is his effort for sharing a balanced release of firm techno cuts while playing with intensities, moods, hypnosis, tension, and release.

Pushing his sound further into leftfield-leaning horizons and textured atmospheric reliefs, Pfirter's highly-anticipated debut long-player, The Empty Space, finds the Argentinian-born, Barcelona-based producer steering across shape-shifting sonic rapids with poise and panache. Inspired by a fractal of elements including physics, sci-fi and Lovecraftian flicks, amongst many other things, The Empty Space is a record that revolves around the experience of the voyage itself rather than the destination, throbbing with a vital pulse that acutely transcends all categories and genres, as Pfirter adroitly recombines techno's DNA into something truly and definitely his own. From the false quiet of gloomy lakeshores and riverbanks to post-industrial cityscapes, through barren no-go zones and tiny basements packed to the rafters, welcome into Pfirter's personal "empty space". Known for his first releases on Float Records and his platform Arsenik, Shutdown showcases a big range of his musical identity. Dold takes you on a hypnotic journey with his melodic interpretations, while he moves things faster on the darkest side of this EP, with his driven techno tracks fully inspired by 909 patterns and analog synth jams. Italian talent Diego Amura makes his MindTrip Music debut. Diego's original tracks on the Automa EP incorporate a raw, analog aesthetic, with a nod to the old school. Straight up jams ready for any dancefloor, they also have a feeling of menace and purpose from the twisted melodies. Jonas Kopp supplies the sole remix, who has influential releases on Tresor, PoleGroup, Ilian Tape, CLR, and many more. His rework concentrates on a more hypnotic flow, instilled with sparks of energy, funk and deep textures.

Two young Argentine techno producers, Alderaan and Mental Resonance, join forces for Man from Earth, which brims with menace and intent right from opener "Man from Earth 1," an unabated, single-minded experiment in contrasting restfulness with forcefulness. "Man from Earth 2" is a fathomless, enigmatic exploration of the trippiest of techno. Pfirter reworks "Man from Earth 3," tweaking the original (unreleased at the time of this release) with the dancefloor squarely in mind. "Man from Earth 4" is an undulating exercise in messing with the listener's mind -- unfaltering and unapologetic in its quest to pull you into its void.
