"This album contains the contents of The 13th Floor Elevators' recording sessions for Contact Records in early 1966. On January 3rd 1966, the band taped both sides of their debut 45 You're Gonna Miss Me/Tried To Hide, which Contact released on January 17th. That same month the (on the 27th) The Elevators were busted for possession of marijuana, and fearing that Texas' draconian drug laws could imperil the band's future, they felt the need to document their unique, garage-infused brand of early psychedelia as a means to document their very existence -- at the time, possession of marijuana could result in a prison sentence of 2-10 years. These recordings were, therefore, meant to be the band's debut LP, which Tommy Hall titled Headstone. The album was essentially split in two; Side 1 featured both sides of the debut 45 alongside teen-oriented covers, while Side 2 was made up of the band's early forays into psychedelia. The recordings are in mono, the sound quality a touch lo-fi, but the primal magic the band were able to conjure is already in evidence, especially on the albums second half - all of which would re-recorded for their debut LP proper The Psychedelic Sounds Of The 13th Floor Elevators later that same year. Aside from the debut 45, the remaining tracks on Side 1 would be left in the can, and would re-emerge (with overdubbed applause) on 1968's duplicitous Live album."

Tim Mariën's music settles in a liminal world, between borders. In A Basement Suite, musical self-evidences are called into question. At first, Mariën 'uproots' our listening experience through his use of unconventional musical tunings, which he distills from tones that are naturally present in the harmonic overtone series. In this liberating approach, turnings do not get bogged down in a fixed basic principle. They spread out and become a range of possibilities for the composer. Marien's flexible method is strongly tied to his practice of rebuilding and retuning instruments to play his microtonal scales, including antique, worn pianos, a discarded harpsichord, and a traveled mandolin. Sometimes the fragile state of these instruments prevents them from being tuned to perfection. But it is precisely this unruly materiality of sound, which runs counter to the theoretical perfection of tuning systems. Furthermore, Mariën often allows the instruments, with their unique timbres and microtonal scales, to simultaneously develop varying transformational processes in his compositions. Instruments are in constant interaction, taking over intervals, gestures and even playing techniques from each other. A Basement Suite takes us to the heart of Mariën's liminal sound world. This suite for string ensemble, written for Tiptoe Company, unites three pieces Mariën composed and reworked between 2012 and 2020: "Basement of Strings," "Unresolved Streets" and "Tomorrow Started the Game I." The liminal approach of A Basement Suite goes even further: the boundaries of the pieces themselves are also porous. Mariën conceived the suite as a modular composition, in which the three pieces can be rearranged and attached to each other in all sorts of ways. In the version for this album, Unresolved Streets (2015) was given a chorus role. With alternating plucked and bowed textures, the instruments seem to be searching for a solution that simply fails to materialize. (Text by Anna Vermeulen. Translation by Thomas R. Moore.)

"Recorded live at the Manchester Apollo 06-10-1983 this incredible artifact documents (with amazing sound) the live behemoth Motorhead were during Brian Robertson's (ex-Thin Lizzy) short stint on guitar, right on the trail of releasing their sixth studio album: Another Perfect Day. In front of a captive audience Lemmy, Phil Taylor and Robertson proceed to unload a murderous row of hits enough to give any hot-blooded rock n' roll fan a heart attack."

"Marasma's Vussa is the Brainchild of Antonio Feola a long-standing figure on the London music scene, Antonio has been running the Fish Factory Studio in Willesden, North London for over two decades now. Throughout the years, he has had a major role in helping many of the current lead players of the London scene have a place to record and define their sound. Antonio's project Masmara has existed for over 30 years and here has found its place on record. Recorded on tape over time with some of the most sought-after players in London and edited during the lockdown period, Vussa is an album of mind-bending deep, cosmic mediative jazz experiments. Boasting catchy melodies and heavy, heavy jazz breaks!"

Limited repress. Complete BBC Sessions; all the Peel Sessions plus two songs performed live on the Something Else TV show on Sept.1, 1979. Recordings are especially significant, featuring Curtis and company performing in full glory. The recorded performances themselves are of exceptional quality, and help dispel the myth that Joy Division was not particularly good in a live setting. To mention two examples, the takes of "Transmission" And "She's Lost Control" even take on a much more aggressive quality than what was originally put to tape. As a bonus, a three-minute interview of Curtis and Morris is also included, providing a valuable look at the Human side of one-half of the band.

CARLA 001CS
|
Carla Dal Forno offers Top Of The Pops, a self-released cassette disclosing six songs of sultry pop devotion. This late-spring cassette of cover songs now gets the wider autumnal release it deserves, showcasing the full range of Dal Forno's virtuous taste, style and production in her distinct post-punk, pop (but) minimalist sensibility. Not without cheek, the wink-and-a-nod blue-film bawdiness of "Lay Me Down" (Renee) and "Give Me Back My Man" (The B-52s) are complemented by the earnest ballads of "A Silver Key Can Open A Lock Somewhere" (Liliput) and The Fates's "No Romance." Kiwi Animal's "Blue Morning" finally gets a recorded release as well. This cosmic inner dialogue of love lost is matched only by the penultimate track, "Summertime Sadness" which is the best example of how devastatingly personal a pop song truly can be. It's all emphasized by Dal Forno's sparse production which, as with each of these six songs, brings her vocal interpretations to the fore. Pearl blue cassette wrapped in color-printed J-cards and with color sticker inlays. Artwork designed by Carla Dal Forno.

Restocked. Inga Copeland releases her second album under the Lolina moniker, Live In Paris. Originally released via Vimeo, some material on Live In Paris is taken from previous releases, Relaxin' With Lolina (2015) and the Hyperdub compilation Hyperdub 10.3 (2014). Copeland, an Estonian-Russian artist, considers the delicate socio-political atmosphere of Paris in 2015 and 2016, performing the 35-minuute set with a multi-screen projection of a giant monopoly board surrounding her. A "review" from an unknown source: "God, reviews can be LOL. So we'll presume you know your own mind and taste. Let us scrub all metaphor. We'll resist comparison. Today's musical tenor overlooked, we'll refuse to dissect. Moments preferred are muted. We won't highlight respite or forgiveness. There's no considering of geographical fact. We'll shut our ears to technology."

"Fresh and new, but rough, layered and head-nodding like classic UK street soul, this is the fifth and for us the best-yet installment in Londoner Eye's excellent, under-the-radar series. Slippery and hard-to-pin-down as usual, but rooted in funk and soul connoisseurship. Two-sided this time -- boozier, dizzier and more spaced-out on the flip, smudged with echo and effects, and scraps of horns and singing. Beautifully hand-decorated sleeves as per."
