Or and The Automatics Group present Auto 17, recordings of raw output from 49 configurations of an EMS VCS 3 synthesizer. Sides A and B are released on 12" vinyl with side C available digitally. Renowned for its ability to produce wide-ranging electronic sound effects, it was sometimes considered problematic when producing melodic sounds due to the instability of its components. The recordings on Auto 17 are the result of incremental/violent changes to the modular configuration of the machine. Recorded directly from the two independent outputs of the VCS 3, unusual modulation routing produces a variety of complex relationships between the left and right channels. Timbral, rhythmic and harmonic themes emerge, revealing unexpected properties of the machine. The Automatics Group undertake projects investigating issues of control, representation, autonomy and formalism.

Another soul-destroying follow-up to the highly-acclaimed 2, with more accompaniments created for the theatre piece, Kindertotenlieder by Gisele Vienne and Dennis Cooper, which premiered in Brest, France, March 2007. Perhaps the broadest bulletin from the duo thus far, featuring two contrasting tracks. The layered dementia bliss of "Loud Game" counterbalances the fried dub of "Sunday." 2021 restock. This CD is the reissue of the highly acclaimed (Prix Ars Electronica Winner) MiniDisc-only release from 1998, about which was said: "This is the first ever MiniDisc-only release." (Alan Phillips, Sony Software). This Gescom Production, assembled by Manchester's own Sean Booth, Rob Brown (Autechre) and Russell Haswell, conquered the technological restrictions inherent in the MiniDisc format. Battling against the ATRAC compression system, they succeeded in producing a masterful perambulation of sonic experimentation. 45 tracks have been sliced into 88 portions for your ease of dissemble-age. "CD_Slopper is the file 'working-name' for the Computer Music unit of Oswald Berthold and Florian Hecker. Hecker and Ost first met in 1995/96 at the MEGO office in Vienna. Both familiar with Computers and DSP processes of both academic and autodidactic influences, they grabbed their first mobile computer when Apple released the first PowerPC laptop ever, the PowerBook 5300! "Shirt Trax are Mark Fell (Sheffield, member of SND of Mille Plateaux) and Jeremy Potter (Brighton). All of their tracks involve the use of the computer as a performance tool. However they didn't wish to use some complex software or system, or spend ages programming structures to generate sound. So lots of what you hear is what can be done on a sampler in real time, or in a sequencer in real time. And although most of the material is edited down, there are no overdubs or pre-programmed structures. This is done in the interest of discovering in the ways technology is used. Like when a designer thinks of an interface, and is planning out a way for you to work. But who wants to do what some synth designer told them? When you watch a child play, suddenly a fork can be talking to a lego horse about something. And it's interesting when someone picks up something and plays around with it like this, because you don't just discover a new way of saying things, you actually invent new things to say. Not so much about the aesthetics of digital glitches or broken systems. And although aware of it, the band is not overly interested in the academic history of what it's doing. The result is a sound like The Human League meet Farmers Manual."
