The first side of this fine album features three tracks ("Tanzmusik", "Kometenmelodie", "Klingklang") from a live show in Denver (Colorado) during Kraftwerk's first tour of America in spring 1975. The second side is occupied by a 26-minute version of their first robotic big hit "Autobahn," recorded in Köln in March of the same year. Another great document from one the groundbreaking electronic music bands of all times.

The University of London Union show took place on February 8, 1980, just a few months before Ian Curtis's death. The 12-song set list was mostly based on songs that would end up on Closer (the band's second and final studio album) but also on classic singles such as "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Digital". The band was in fine form with Curtis leading the charge into their own gloomy, psychotic, atmospheres. A quintessential live album and a real treat for any Joy Division fan.

Limited 2023 restock. In March 1969, the Velvets (with Doug Yule now on bass) embarked on a nationwide tour. One of these included a stint at the "End Of Cole Avenue" club in Dallas -- one of the Velvets' few live performances where a professional sound engineer was actually on hand to record the sets. Some of the songs recorded over those few nights showed up in 1974 on their 1969: Velvet Underground Live album, but the sound quality was not great due to the use of third or fourth generation tapes. However, the first-generation tapes have since resurfaced, and the difference in sound quality (heard here) is a welcome one.

There are very few truly iconoclastic figures in the history of popular music since the mid-20th century, but Don Van Vliet (1941-2010), aka Captain Beefheart, is certainly one of them. Although initially perceived as a purveyor of grizzly electric R'n'B, from the outset the Captain routinely distinguished his compositions with surreal lyrics and unusual time signatures. In 1969 the Captain presented the world with his third record, the outstandingly arcane masterpiece, Trout Mask Replica (1969). Amalgamating a breathtaking diversity of sounds incorporating blues, free jazz, and the avant-garde, this seminal work remains one of "pop" music's most aurally challenging listening experiences! Although never a huge commercial success, it was a massively inspirational work. By the time of this April 1974 broadcast, Captain Beefheart -- and the 29th incarnation in a long line of ever-mutating Magic Bands -- had reverted to more traditionally-structured compositions. The touring band included some highly revered players including reedsman Del Simmons, guitarists Dean Smith and Fuzzy Fuscaldo, bassist Paul Uhrig, and drummer Ty Grimes. Caught live in Kansas City, Beefheart was amidst an extensive US tour promoting his eighth album, Unconditionally Guaranteed (1974). A must for all Beefheart fans.

Probably one of the best incarnations of Weather Report, with a percussionist on board. In fact, for most of their existence, the band did have a fifth member. It was only sometime after Heavy Weather (1977) that the band started touring as a quartet, with Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine holding down the rhythm section. With the release of Night Passage (1980) they had added Bobby Thompson to the empty percussion chair and went back on the road. This is a live recording of the Night Passage band recorded in February 1980 at the Fox Theater.

Miles Davis Sextet, live from the Fillmore West Auditorium, San Francisco April 9th, 1970. The revolutionary Bitches Brew was released on March 30th, 1970. By that time, Miles Davis had started performing in rock venues, bringing his music to a much broader audience. His remarkable band displays near telepathic interplay throughout the fiery, confrontational performance captured on this set, originally broadcast on KSAN-FM. Taking the form of one continuous piece, it's a vital and exciting document of one of jazz's greatest innovators at his peak.

Founded in 1970 in Dusseldorf, Kraftwerk was the only German band to rise from the so-called "krautrock" scene to true international stardom. Of course, it was partially their distinct look that set them apart. At a time when long hair and scruffy clothing was the norm for musicians, Kraftwerk cut their hair short and wore handmade suits. And at a time when guitar rock reigned supreme, Kraftwerk did not even have a guitar player -- in fact they soon did away with instruments altogether, becoming one of the first truly electronic bands. With the release of their fifth album Autobahn in 1975 (which mocked the glorification of the shiny modern world that had been built upon the rubble of post-war Germany), Kraftwerk finally achieved major stardom. "Kometenmelodie 1" and "2" was recorded live in Paris during the Autobahn tour and featured the classic Schneider/Hütter/Bartos/Flür line-up. Side B was recorded live in Utrecht in 1981 shortly after the release of their prophetic Computer World. It features their 1978 hit "The Model" plus hits from the album, "Numbers" and "Pocket Calculator".
