SKUDGE 013EP
|
Clear/Wasp brings back memories from when Skudge combined and reduced both techno and house in a flawless way. They also utilize samples that in another context would have felt misplaced in a very classy manner. Clear shows from the first note the resemblance of the now-classic Skudge sound optimized for the floors of today. On the flip is an attention-grabbing and tension-inducing track "Wasp" which manages to evolve in a hypnotic and erratic sound. Something that feels fresh in the hands of Skudge. For fans and newcomers alike, this is a faithful Skudge record that will stick around.

X0X_01 is three different takes from two different periods of time in one acid-focused 12". The record features two Skudge originals from 2009, optimized for today's standards, and also a classically-trained Splice track, where a fierce drum pattern goes in parallel with the acidic bass line. A current take on a very classic machine.

Summing up 2017, Skudge dug through the archive material from the formative years of 2009 and 2010. For the keen ear and reflective soul, the basis of the much-liked Skudge sound is present here in an updated, perhaps more refined record. While working hard to pursue a specific set of labels, sound, and aesthetic, Static/Memories presents a welcomed look into the retrospect of their unique sound.

Solid, powerful and eclectic... Skudge has yet again delivered a fine remix 12". This time there's a remix from Blue Hour, whose slamming production work on his own, self-titled label has been delivering some of the finest techno in recent times. Blue Hour's remix is a pumping and pushing reinterpretation of "Hunted". Skudge invites Parisian Brawther to lend a remix on side B. He literary beefs up "Below" with his "Steroids Remix". Fine tuning the original's core elements he also adds a mix of modern, rugged and dusty grooves: a perfect mixture of both house and techno.

LP 1 is the debut album from Swedish producer Daniel Andréasson, an artist that has both a sonically and artistic resemblance to the Skudge family of labels and artists. Pushing his eighth year of releasing records, Andréasson has accomplished the task of creating a debut album that seems to tie together the sound of his previous EPs. Andréasson's sound is in line with a more outsider approach, but with a dancefloor focus, a sound that he has been pushing since the beginning. This approach shines through at the most on the tracks such as "Mc35I# Rushup", "Stay", and "Dreams" as these specific tracks shows Andréasson's more accomplished style. In between, the album keeps a perfect concept throughout. Taking breathers with its interludes and in general "shorter" tracks that hints of an ambient-leaning urge to express himself, he never loses focus. A masterful debut album from an artist to keep your eye on.

This is the second 12" from Taken, the duo effort of Elias Landberg and Nihad Tule. The duo has done a local show at Under Bron in Stockholm as well as Herrensauna in Berlin, this new EP sounds is as inspired and fresh as their live sets, setting the course straight away. The reminiscent sounds of techno's adolescence goes everything but unnoticed as the reduced and powerful "Cluster" on the A side showcases Taken's ambitions. Going into deeper territories, the B side "Elysia" almost smells of strobes and smoke machines for the eye-opening moments of a proper party.

Skudge White return with Finnish legend Mono Junk. He delivers three tracks that together span 23 years. First off is "November Bass", a 14 minute journey taking us to the far depths of electronic music. Made in 2016, it has rolling and thundering beats and perfected synth work. On the B side are two pumpers from the archives. "Disillusions" resembles the forgotten experimental touches of techno's early days. "Melody Boy's Melody" goes into a sing-a-long (in the right way) appeal, with enchanting rhythms and a perfected melody - a heady piece with IDM resemblances.

Skudge present Balancing Point. When the duo Skudge started out in late 2009 with their first release on Alphahouse, followed by a string of underground hits on their own label Skudge Records, little did they know that they would be in the forefront of the Stockholm sound of the dawning 2010s. Complex rhythmic textures, combined with an echoing audial lightness, sub intense quick basslines and swirling percussion is considered their trademark. This updated take on the techno and house crossover was soon appreciated and caught the attention of a full spectrum of artists. 2010 alone saw six releases from the Skudge hub; Culminating in 2011 with the release of Phantom (SKUDGE 001CD/LP), the full length album release on the home imprint, followed by the sub labels that releases other artists as well. Five years from that era, Skudge has reshaped into the solo work from one of the original artists. This change of production and artistry launches into the crates with the release of Balancing Point. Skudge's sound has shifted into a new territory. The entire A-side of Balancing Point acts as the beginning of this grooving whirlpool of a record: quick and immense. The UK influences that were formed in the '90s are infused through the B-side, ending off in an almost orchestral piece. The delicate subtleness of Balancing Point showcases a familiar coming-of-light type of style that leave the listener sure of the future. "Polar" features Samo DJ. Edition of 500.

Often referred to as The Pig and rarely spotted without shades, Mike "Aardvarck" Kivits has remained a compelling figurehead within the Dutch underground for decades, happily flitting between down-tempo and high-octane styles from release to release and generally sounding like no one else out there. Kivits has developed a strong affiliation with the Skudge Records operation, which commenced with his humongous remix of the Swedish act's "Convolution" in 2010. Having committed two full 12" releases to the Skudge Presents cause (the Indo EP in 2012 and Plus Det in 2014), Kivits now presents a full Aardvarck long-player on the label. The cryptically titled Co in Ci features eight new Aardvarck productions from Kivits, with more pacey excursions on the LP and more experimental and ambient material on the 10". Co in Ci is the ninth album the Dutch producer has released in the 13 years since his 2002 debut LP for Delsin.

After 2014's set of acclaimed releases on L.I.E.S., Crème Organization, and Rush Hour, Jorge Velez comes to Skudge White to drop a proper dose of relentless subterranean techno. On "Les Méandres," factory rhythms carry a sinister, echoed call-and-response synth pattern. "Blue Bottle" brings volcanic, hissing synths to an intense peak over hammering rhythms. "Tunnel," Velez says, is the sound of "the most intense moment on the floor when it's just a blur of all sounds and lights and the pound of the drums." "Hydrocution" delivers a hypnotic, metallic combination of rhythm and dissonant synths. Original artwork by Pauline Gouablin.

A collaboration between Elias Landberg and Nihad Tule. They started this conceptual project in November 2014 with the goal of recording and mastering a complete EP in one day. The resulting analog jams are pretty different from each other. The A-side, "terrorfish," is reminiscent of simplistic acid rave tunes from the '90s while the B-side, "halcyon," is a dreamy ambient trip. Pressed on red and black marbled vinyl with a printed A4 inlay.

The Skudge imprint is growing, along with its artists, and they're now ready to embrace longer formats, a testimony to the future and more than anything a continuous effort to grasp the present's relevancy. After their wonderful EP from a year ago, the Fishermen are ready to take you on a diving trip with their very first album, an accomplishment in itself. With Patterns and Paths, Thomas Jaldemark (YTA) and Martin Skogehall (MRSK, Smell The Flesh) have crafted a rather mesmerizing story of abstract and figurative tropes altogether, and "eerie" is probably the best word to describe the general mood of this, but hard with a raw eeriness. The affair starts with "Greenhorn," gentle foreplay setting the tone for an imminent journey into the lightless abysses. "Hope is Gone" further enhances the incoming grim turn of events in a coil-like fashion before "Serpents" makes your feet and hips take over your fear of the unknown. The trance has indeed begun and you soon enter a hidden warehouse rave cave of un-earthly shamanism, the unforgiving stomp of "Get None." "Dyspnea" manages to find a path into deeper regions, the groove shifting towards a darker funk with "Lost Teeth," a Caribbean techno banger that'd wake any zombie in the making. "The Four Skulls" suddenly hints at a safer journey with healing percs and melancholic pads, but "Rise" soon shatters those false hopes with an evil, motorik groove. Then you hit "Scurvy," where the pace slows down a little only to introduce the seductive side of this gloomy adventure, a challenge to your feet, inducing lascivious moves. Keeping you in a trance, "In Solitude" combines both previous tracks' strengths with an added Twin Peaks value. Now finally reaching the far bottom of the ocean, the mood gets even more claustrophobic with "Sunken Mosque," the last stage of this trance before returning to the surface. Indeed, if "Torments" lets you catch a breath of air, it is filled with minerals, the world above has changed, and you might very well feel safer back under the water, a reverse mirror to Mike Ink's old Gas project.

The concept behind the Driftwood EP can be traced back to an old Swedish theater soundtrack from the '80s. What you get is Rivet's most floor-bending material ever. Filled with evil, lurking storms of the most timeless kind, the journey starts with a bang as "Driftwood" crosses over the whole dance music spectrum, taking cues from funk, post-punk, Manchester and Chicago house. "Crane Dance" follows a more sinister path with its witchy incantations carving a somewhat demonic take on house, a mesmerizing cascade of beats and eerie pads. Lastly, "Line of Moments" brings us some more mellow grounds filled with melancholic strings soon to be revealed as deceivingly acidic chimeras.

The fourth release of the Skudge White series and MRSK's latest project, a journey beyond techno that almost takes a shamanistic turn. In his new Smell The Flesh guise, the man delivers six cuts of eerie beats, challenging his western aesthetics with a nonetheless complex yet primal approach. "Hail Kongo" sets the tone with its syncopated, haunting beats before "Closed Walls" creeps you up with dark Jamaican acid. Then, "Unsettled Conflict" reminds us of those '80s horror movies, the most menacing kind, while "Blood Relic" throws us in the middle of a trance-like chase scene. The record closes off with "Struck by Venom's" voodoo techno and "Cardiac Arrest's" final morbid message, an all-in-all unsettling journey.

It's been an unusual while since the elusive unit had a new record out, but after an extensive row of live shows and remixes, Skudge surface once again with a double-tracker containing some of their deepest joints yet. With "Irie" finally available on wax after the Nonplus fifth year celebration, the band plays with contrast, crafting a warm and yet sinister mental floor killer, while "Faux" ventures into more abstract melodies with one of their hardest drives ever.
