Subaltern Records welcome another newcomer to the label, UK-badman Cartridge, who steps up with a smashing debut EP showing the world he's not messing about. "Stone Cold": The aptly titled EP opener hits hard like a boulder, painting a post-apocalyptic super-metroidesque landscape, building upon the glorious "Flummox". Gritty synth lines stating a simple yet catchy and evolving melody, all rounded by a fat bass exactly how we like it. A glittery rain paves the way to the breakdown and the second drop, which tells the final part of this majestic romance. "Choker": Time to get stealthy with this one... a sinister intro erupts into a refined yet powerful barrage of bass. Solid groove, heavily panned percussion, clever wobs and synth hits, masterful reverb and delay interplays, Cartridge's sound design really sets to impress with this superb number. "Sweet Doughs": If the concept of "sinister" was established on the previous track, "Sweet Doughs" definitely takes it to the next level. Menacing car-tire-screeching-like synths and an amusing yet slightly uncanny vocal sample set up the pace for this weighty dance-floor rattler. A saturated 808-like bass propels the track, which reveals itself as a master-class on how to blend power, bass, crafty sound design and an incredible attention to details.

For the first release of the new decade Subaltern Records introduce LA-based Oxóssi who has conjured a captivatingly sinister sonic palette for his debut EP on the label. A scorching 8-bar intro catapults you straight into "Sama", the first track of the release, where abandoned-jungle-ruins atmospheres meet threatening wooden flutes and weighty wobs -- Oxóssi is not messing about. The narration proceeds with a melody sung by a penetrating laser-beam-like synth, which adds a space layer to this organic banger, getting more and more detuned throughout the track while kickstarting a call-and-answer march between the flute and synth-wob melodies. An alluring pad harmony and a hidden inspirational message from the artist introduce the fascinatingly titled "Saut Dans Le Vide", a masterful arrangement of unrelenting piano chords, subtle choir stabs, dreamy flute leads, and compellingly staggering drums. Elements keep artfully alternating throughout this convoluted composition which arouses a pensive, melancholy-nuanced hopefulness. It's time to get glitchy here, as "Undead" makes its entrance. Shimmering melodies rain down in a glittery shower of eerie purple confetti, surrounded by rattling white noise strikes, and playful-yet-mighty bass hits. As the story evolves, an 8-bit synth lead briefly takes us to a post-apocalyptic landscape before we momentarily wake up from this psychedelic daydream, just in time to take a breath and dive back in for round two.

After his first appearance on Subaltern's Kaleidoscope Vol.1 (SUBALT 013EP, 2017) with the scorching "Alter", far-east sonic assassin and Back To Chill member Helktram makes his comeback on Subaltern Records with a heavy-as-stone three tracker. Each of the cuts is a dancefloor weapon which shows a different side of the Japanese mastermind's razor-sharp production. Opening with a crunchy guitar melody, "Recoil" sets the pace of the EP: a catchy and relentless bass-line takes you on a march through forests and mountains, as distant pads and SFXs remind us to stay alert. After the first round the guitar comes back, warning you that you're not done yet. A straight hitter which will keep playing in your head long after the night is over. The aptly titled "Mineral" is hard as diamond and rough as coal. This triplet juggernaut tramples systems all over the world leaving its mark on any raver who encounters it. A sinister, Theremin-esque melody paves the way to a stripped-down beat with a militant bass riff. Skillfully executed distortion engulfs the low-end turning it into a powerful growly wobble. A threatening melody paints the post-apocalyptic landscape of the EP's third cut, "Beware", in what is Helktram's trademark style. In this track distortion is the name of the game: an unforgiving lead matched by grimy and glitchy stabs evolves into an uninterrupted riff which carries the rhythm leaving space for the bass melody. As the title suggests, extreme caution is required when handling this blaster.

Hailing from California, Subtle Mind have been making not so subtle waves in the US bass scene for quite some time. "Ambitions" featuring Ill Chill opens the EP; lounge vibes greet the listener before sinking into a bathe of bliss and bass. Subtle Mind puts the classic 808 drum kit through its paces in "Gelato". Mellow pads disguise the heaviness at first, but once the ground shaking bass-line hits, there is no doubt that this one is a tactical weapon. "Standard Strain" featuring Saule is carried by airy bells and soulful vocal hits, bringing a jazzy twist to the table.

Making his debut on Subaltern with a psychotropic journey into the weald is Estonian producer Bisweed. On "Shelter", dark synths lead into weighty bass-lines, embedded in driving percussive elements and a spine-chilling atmosphere. "Swamp" goes deeper, as haunting textures guide the listener into a pulsating implosion of low frequencies bound to shake up the dancefloor as well as your expectations. "Dolmen", featuring Mentha, lightens the mood -- but only ever so slightly. Chanting voices hail the listener, as wide planes of sound unfold into a bass-heavy yet deep stepper.

Belgian producer Clearlight provides three examples of experimental, meditative yet bass-heavy and dancefloor-suitable tracks. "Circular Thinking" is a tribal track with a shamanic feel. The incessant triplets' drum groove and the multitude of organic elements and sound FXs takes the listener through a journey, topped by a sinister psychedelic vocal sample. "Jata" retains the tribal feel while fusing reggae and dub-influenced horns and samples. The driving percussion beat vanishes throughout the breakdown, and unpredictably evolves into a oneiric carillon-lead outro. Finnish prodigy LAS re-thinks "Circular Thinking" into a syncopated dancefloor weapon.
